This year's theme is politics in art...
We have come so far within raising awareness and education. However still feel there is a way to go in individuals supporting and respecting each other for who they choose to be. |

Right on, brother!
A new LGBTQIA+ bookstore has opened on Tib Street in Manchester city centre and I’ve been buying some great books from there. Most recently I read All The Young Men by Ruth Coker Burns about how she was a one-woman, ass kicking, bad-ass in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the 80’s. An absolute tear jerker that highlights the importance of never forgetting the devastating war that the community endured, and still endures today.

Please ignore my blatant ignorance but what does LGBTQIA+ mean I know LGBTQ but what is IA+? A gay friend of mine has said they will soon be known as the alphabet group and even she couldn't tell me what all the letters mean. |

Pretty sure I is interested and A is Asexual. I think it’s wonderful we are accepting and understanding of people’s range of identities. I think sexuality and gender are both a spectrum and are certainly not binary so I’m glad for people finding new ways to identify themselves.  |

Intersex is a general term used to refer to individuals born with, or who develop naturally in puberty, biological sex characteristics which are not typically male or female. That is, a person with an intersex condition is born with sex chromosomes, external genitalia, or an internal reproductive system that is not considered typical for a male or female.
Asexual – A term used to describe someone who does not experience sexual attraction toward individuals of any gender. Asexuality is a sexual orientation, and is different from celibacy, in that celibacy is the choice to refrain from engaging in sexual behaviors and does not comment on one’s sexual attractions. An asexual individual may choose to engage in sexual behaviors for various reasons even while not experiencing sexual attraction. Asexuality is an identity and sexual orientation; it is not a medical condition.

Im not sure how to take this. In the hope that it was said in a friendly and non-dismissive way, I will respond to it with kindness.
Nobody’s sexuality is a choice. I can’t choose to be Asexual or Lesbian, just as you can’t choose to be Trans, or a gay man can’t choose to be straight.
I suppose that all of the letters of the acronym can be neatly summed up by saying “queer”, in that the letters all denote a different perspective from the cis-normative, heterosexual hegemony. But the fact that all of the letters exist is merely an acceptance that there are different representations of sexuality that can’t be neatly put up into a binary heterosexual/homosexual box. Instead, it shows that we are all placed somewhere on an infinite spectrum of sexuality, depending on our identity.
I think the confusion comes from the fact that “queerness” has been continuously dissected over the years. One can even elect to study queerness and queer identities at university, now. This has brought about realisations and a whole plethora of language that is used to express the many differences. We can easily say that someone who doesn’t conform to the heterosexual category is “queer”, but not all queernesses are the same, hence the many (and growing number of) letters used to make sure that all queernesses are recognised, accepted and then represented.
Contrast this with heterosexual language. There aren’t any electives in universities to study the different representations of cis-gendered heterosexuality (even though there probably are many different representations). So, it seems like it heterosexuality is singular, without any differences, which, in turn, makes the dissection of queerness, and the language that comes from it, seem ridiculous.
I think that this is a failing of the academic community, because it basically dismisses the many hidden differences of heterosexuality. The very fact that this website exists proves that there are different tropes of heterosexuality, because everyone here doesn’t fully conform to monogamous ideals.

Is monogamy a sexuality though?
Good point about 'straight' being a very small box. Perhaps true straight is indeed a very small box but there are further dimensions to heterosexuality that aren't covered by one word.  |

Thank you for clearing that up for me. Just before covid I worked at London metropolitan university and saw it written down tried asking but was told to be quiet just in case I offended someone. |
