I’ve been seeing this a lot lately in various forum threads. Mostly couple profiles mention it but it’s got me intrigued…
Is this something a lot of people have here?
For anonymity or personal safety?
Do you have one?
If yes, what kind of phone is it?
Please satiate my curiosity, thank you x |

Trick is to get a phone that can accept 2 sim cards. Get a cheap pay as you go sim as the second one and give that number out.
Added bonus is possible better coverage in different areas in emergencies |

"It’s a bit too Line of Duty for me, I’d probably lose it anyway. Do have a friend from here who has a fab only phone though, seems to work for him. "
Me too…which handbag have left it in now?! And my phone is always on silent so a fab phone would be too. |

Oooh now I’ve been thinking of this. Do you know any good dual sim phones? I’ve read it’s still not that popular an option here in the UK |

If your network allows virtual sim, and your phone can use a virtual SIM, you don't even need the physical second SIM, the software does it.
My phone can use a virtual SIM, but my network doesn't! |

"Just don't give out your number, use here or kik then you can block them easy. If you use wickr you can even voice call with giving your number out. "
I never give my number out. Was just curious about other people’s use of phones. I’ve not tried this wickr thing… |

Use an app like Vyke to get a burner number in an app. You can even use it to sign up to things like WhatsApp so you don't need to give out your personal number.
On Android there's an app called Shelter which will hijack the "work" profile feature and allow you to run "work" apps separately (e.g. home and "work" WhatsApp, camera, photos etc).
Pretty useful for separating home and "work" life |

We use an old phone and a PAYG sim.
It’s only used when we get to the point of arranging to meet someone and handy (in our case) if you want to confirm you’re meeting a genuine couple.

I use an old phone with a PAYG sim for Fab contacts. I only spend a couple of quid a month on it. it means I don't get any embarrassing messages or pics on my main phone & if someone decided to do something unpleasant, it's easy enough to ditch & start over! |

I couldn’t cope with owning two phones. One would get lost for sure!
I am quite particular about who I give my number to though. My weirdo radar is generally finely tuned. |

"Whats the point when you can block numbers?? "
You can, but if someone keeps pestering you from different numbers or they publish yours in a place that results in you getting contacted by plenty of unwanted calls/MSG's blocking numbers isn't going to be a big help. |

Guilty.
I got the idea from a friend that it worked really well for.
I’m single so it’s not to keep anything hidden but it does ensure my privacy and means that if I do give out my number to someone who may misuse it then it’s only takes a replacement SIM to solve the issue.
The benefit really for me is that I can just turn the bugger off and pop it in a drawer when I can’t be arsed.

I have two phones, one for friends and family which is a number I have had since the late 90’s ie my first and original number so I wouldn’t want to “lose” it. The second phone number is for everyone else including fab contacts and dating contacts and online stuff that asks for a mobile number. Both phones are iPhones cos I’m a spoilt brat |

I certainly get the appeal but can you imagine being pulled over by the police ‘excuse me sir, can you explain this burner phone at the station?’. Rightly or wrongly those daft little burners are just associated with being dodgy! |

We got a “fab phone” almost from the start of us finding the site. It was the cheapest handset going and we had it on PAYG we did have a stalker issue which ended up with the police.
Never referred to it as a burner phone, only really heard that term in movies and tv |

I was in the O2 shop recently helping someone else get a new phone, and I was surprised to see that the cheapo Nokia she wanted was dual SIM. I mentioned it to the sales guy and he said that practically all of them are dual SIM now.
Most of them aren't advertised as dial SIM, because we don't care about that in the UK, but they have the capability. Try pulling out the SIM tray on your phone to see if it has 2 SIM slots. |

Yes this is true! In my early days I gave my number out to a guy who kept WhatsApp me and even phoned me while I was at work! I blocked him but every time he got a new phone it’s start again. It wasn’t nasty but it was really irritating. |

This is all fascinating, seems to be a good mix of responses.
Apologies for not replying to everyone individually, it’s not personal in the slightest I’m just lazy at typing I have read them all though.
Thanks you beautiful, helpful people I appreciate you |

I used to have a separate phone for fab and dating sites, but unless it was switched on and with me all the time, as well as having my company phone with me, I found myself missing calls from people who I'd loved to have met. Nowadays I just think, what the hell, if they want my number to hear the sound of my voice, they are welcome to it, they'll only abuse it once! |

I had a dual sim phone, but after making a couple of daft errors & choosing the wrong number to call or reply from, I decided that 2 separate handsets was safer!!! |

Most android phones now come with dual sim.
New iPhones are nano and 1 esim but esims are only really avaliable on contract in the UK.
Dual sim hasn't taken off in the UK cause we get much better mobile contracts than the states |

I have a 'play phone', an old Nokia with a PAYG SIM - it sits in its box most of the time, battery out, waiting for a call to action!
When it does gets used, it's similar to a few posts above - for text or voice calls to verify as genuine, and last-minute arrangements, updates, etc.
An important thing to remember is to avoid it being cut off after extended periods of inactivity - don't let any hit the six-month mark, and sending a single text message is all it needs to keep it alive... |

I used to have a Fab phone. I liked that my dodgy pics and messages were separate from my everyday phone, so I didn't have the fear of accidentally tweeting boobs from the work account or any wee people stumbling on anything they shouldn't. I might set that up again. |
