What pastimes take you away from "normal", discluding swinging.
For me the ultimate was paragliding followed closely by sailing.
Reasons being when up there in good calm conditions, ther'es no noise, no traffic, no obligation to answer your phone, it's solitary which alone calms me and although deemed to be an adrenaline sport it is overall once pff the ground a very calming experience.
Sailing in light winds and good temperatures i.e non UK sailing again can really focus you and get you away from daily noise and worries, just the lapping of the water against the boat, even good if not alone. Just wondering what it is that does that for other people? |

Hiking for me.
Used to play badminton for years and one of my colleagues who was in a very stressful job that involved giving comfort and solace to others always said when he was chasing a shuttlecock at high speed he had little time to focus on anything else. That was his escape mechanism. |

At first that sounds mad, a fast paced game like badminton but as you say that is the only thing in the world you focus on so it is that escape from everything else. |

Mine is walking on the beach, especials when its a bit stormy. sitting on the rocks or the cliffs listening to the sound of the waves crashing.
I totally relax and switch off, the beach is my happy place |

Steampunk takes us to a period in history that never existed.
Medieval reenactment takes us to a worked without electricity, steam, internal combustion engines or gadgets.
Both are forms of pure escapism and we highly recommend both to anyone wishing to escape the modern world for the occasional weekend |

Indeed, both in Whitby. We're only go to the steampunk weekends now, there's one next weekend but the big one is late July, when there'll be LOADS of us. Free entertainment all day & parade on Saturday afternoon (lots of our photos were taken there - by various people) |
