This post isn't about how others view you. Just before anybody states they don't do things to their body to appease other people.
Summer is creeping up and I really want to start getting back into some sort of shape. Last year I was walking 8 miles in the evening after work, eating healthy and doing small home workouts before I had emergency abdominal surgery which scuppered my plans for the rest of the summer.
This year my aim is to be in some sort of relative fitness before summer arrives. Food isn't that much of an issue, happy to not snack (or to make better choices) and I quite enjoy fasting. The harder part is cooking healthy meals when I can't be bothered. Any ideas for quick, easy, healthy meals?
Onto the fitness.. Home workouts can be done easily when kids are in bed, I just need the motivation, and I can often find more important things to be doing like laundry, cleaning etc. Walking/hiking can be a little tricky when Mr is out or working but I have all the motivation (plus a springer to keep me company).
How do you all balance it? When do you "start" if you're not one that keeps up with fitness throughout the year and any tips to help along the way. |

You’ve already decided you want to do it, so start right away.
Being a busy parent, I find that pre-cooking batches of food works for me. I train after little one has gone to bed. |

Food is the main thing to focus on (or lack of it! )
I've been ill for the past couple of weeks so had to stop doing our usual stuff but hopefully next week will get back to normal which is walking every day, 2-3 runs through the week and a couple of strength training sessions plus some sport on top of that.
I'd never have been able to do so much while we had younger kids though.

I tend to eat similar things, that I know work for me and that I enjoy.
Make my own granola, so its sugar free and no additives.
Lunch is lots of cucumber/peppers and some grapes, with a small bit of cheese and ricecakes, and maybe an egg or bit of meat.
Dinner is usually meat and veg with potatoes, or rice pasta (much better than normal pasta), and I just control the size of it.
Little snacking, but if I’m hungry I eat
I don’t consume a lot of calories, but I think we eat more than we need to these days.
I exercise every day walking the dog, and when I’m well, I do hiit/yoga following a YouTube vid. I for this in wherever. When I restart I will listen to my body, and so as much as I feel comfortable with, and extend what I do every day.
It’s more about the potion sizes for me. |

I am master of healthy cooking. Wish I stick to it more often )
Few things I figure out for my self:
1. Don’t buy prepared or junk food. As soon as it is in fridge you’ll it sooner or later
2. While grocery shopping buy less processed more raw food
3. Limit sauce buying, instead buy more spices.
4. Get rid of a frying pan
5. Use your oven. Google your favourite recipe with Oven at the end.
Enjoy the food, don’t blame your self if you cheat a bit, try to cheat with smaller portion each time

Calorie tracking apps will help you here, at least they've been helpful for me in the past. At the beginning it's a little hit and miss but once you've got some of the meals you regularly make in there you'll have a better idea of what's "healthy" or not. Plus it's a bonus if you end the day with a few hundred calories left over and you can splurge on a doughnut
Obviously a lot more to nutrition than just counting calories but it's a useful tool.

Interesting post, I'm cycling to and from work nowadays, it's 13 miles, I've always struggled as I'm a larger guy and as I've got older found it easy to gain weight but harder to lose it. It's about time management for me, a small breakfast seems to work best for me but at the moment One meal a day and intermittent fasting days, just water, cut way back on the carbs. Rice, pasta, bread etc. Get your body into Ketosis and it will start using its own fat stores. The first 2 weeks I did this I lost 16 pounds. Just take your time, eat healthy, be healthy cut your stress and BE HAPPY. Love Paul X |

"Thanks all, I am reading and mind banking it all. Solo parenting tonight. "
Is mind banking the written equivalent to politely nodding your head while thinking about something more interesting? |

Not that my body is anyone's aim. But kind of on the road back to where I was due to illness. I've just got the pinch of nom book, which have kid friendly healthy meals and many of them aren't that time consuming. |

I’ve exercised a few times a week since I was kid it’s a habit now. I walk everyday as much for my body as my mind. I teach dance/fitness classes so I really don’t have an excuse to miss it as I’d be letting my class members down.
I’m lucky in that I have a fast metabolism and have always been able to eat pretty much what I want however I am diabetic so I tend not to eat a lot of sugary snacks, never eat ready meals and I cook most of what I do eat from scratch.
It’s more about potion control for me and doing an exercise I enjoy instead of following some kind of plan that I get no motivation or joy from, you will find what works for you OP, good luck with it xx |

Maybe sound stupid
But always give this tip for people who are pressed for time due to life comments be it children or work or what have you
Ither a back pack with wights or wighted vest and go about your normal day be it cleaning or going a walk
With the body carrying extra wight it will be working out without your knowing
Obviously not all day but a hour so a day |

I want to get my arse back in shape too for summer. Been now 5 days back to the gym and loving it
I personally don't do diets but I don't eat very unhealthy either
As for when to start, NOW. Saying you'll start tomorrow or next week or from next month never works |

The 1st step is looking at your body and deciding what you want to work towards
This then gives you an idea of your food intake and exercise selection to work towards what you want
For the vast majority of people it’ll simply be
Lift weight and eat less food
How you make that happen is different for everyone as schedules differ, motivation differs etc etc
Find what works for you to make it happen |

I work out 3/times a week...I can't work out at home, I need the Gym environment. Been going for just over a month now and have lost 7lb already by using a combination of cardio, resistance/weights and swimming.
Eating little and often helps me... haven't changed what I eat because it's relatively healthy but added more veg and eat several pieces of fruit a day. If I want chocolate I have it, just don't have loads. I drink lots of water throughout the day
I'm noticing the difference in my body, bingo wings are disappearing, the muscle in my arms and legs are more defined. My abs are returning. I feel less tired and more motivated in the day. I'm sleeping better as well.
Just go for it, start slow and build it up |

I know what to do. I’ve had personal trainers and dieticians for the last 4 years.
I just need the kick up the arse to get up and do it. I don’t know if there is any correlation or just an unhappy coincidence, but ever since I got my first vaccine dose back in April, I have zero energy. I was well en route to training for the London Marathon then, doing 15km runs 3x a week, plus strength training. After the vaccine I had crippling headaches that landed me in A&E a couple of times. And I’ve never been the same since.
I’ve put 2 stone back on from my initial 4 stone loss back in 2018 and I am terrified to put it all back on again…but reading my own post is giving me some motivation to get up and exercise. My eating is mostly ok. I start a new job in May with a new uniform and it has to at very least be a size 12 when I start. I hope. |
