The car lane? Is that the same as “the road”? I saw some cyclists cycling on the road but it didn’t seem shockingly different to last week so I may be missing something. |

Yup I've done it! Wouldnt say goading! But as someone pointed out to me is far safer than riding at the edge and some vehicles trying to squeeze through the gap! So I've asserted more confidence and further into the road most of time x |

I noticed a pair of cyclists cycling completely in the middle of the road on Sunday, side by side. I couldn’t pass them for ages. Very frustrating. I hadn’t thought about it at the time, but maybe it was related to the change.
A cyclist was killed near my house on the first day of the change. A van on the same side of the road hit him, no details released but I wonder if he was further out than the van expected.
I read the changes yesterday, there’s loads of it. No way most people will read it all. |

I would like it if someone enforced cyclists having lights on at night. I live down a long country lane with no streetlights. They are damn hard to see, and sometimes scare the crap out of me when they come up the side of me at junctions. |

I am right by one of the cycle superhighways. Nearly get mown down on the crossing at least once a week.
Also watched a woman cycling on the other side of the road, to the superhighway, with no lights on and looking at her mobile phone in the dark the other evening.
The issue is some drivers are rubbish, some cyclists are rubbish.
Highway code changes will make no difference to this. |

On my way to do a PCR test earlier, I did see a big lorry get dangerously close to a cyclist on a very bad bend near my house. The cyclist was minding their own business and couldn't have done anything differently. The lorry was clearly being driven by a dork. |

No, he was in the gutter, just about. He was also lit up like a Christmas tree and riding on a sunny afternoon that required me to employ my sun visor. The lorry was simply in the wrong to overtake where they did - on a very sharp left hand bend. |

Who will MOT the bikes?
Who will insure a cyclists, realistically?
Road tax doesn't exist, our roads are paid out of your council tax.
How will the authorities know who does and does not own a bike? As a child I made mine from bits of others. There isn't an existing list of ownership. There can't be.

It was abolished in 1937, with the process having been started by a certain Sir Winston Churchill. ... But none of it pays directly for roads - All of it goes into the pot of general government taxation.
So you don't really pay "Road Tax" PMSL. |

Wouldn't that rather put off people from cycling? Extra hurdles to jump, extra money - when the government is trying to encourage more people to cycle for health reasons and to reduce traffic as well as the environmental impact of vehicles. |

Well its quite simple, if you over 15 years and have bike,then you must have bike ID number and its belongs to you . Just as car works. To many bikers think they can do what they like on main roads. If you use road then take full responsibility of highway traffic code. |

I have always treated them as another vehicle on the road, staying at least a car's length behind and pass them in the next lane when it is clear but that's in the countryside. I don't drive in cities much. I don't see the point of risking injuring someone for the sake of a few seconds or minutes' rush. |

"I have always treated them as another vehicle on the road, staying at least a car's length behind and pass them in the next lane when it is clear but that's in the countryside. I don't drive in cities much. I don't see the point of risking injuring someone for the sake of a few seconds or minutes' rush."

I was stopped at a red light and one of these cyclist types actually stopped next to me and put his hand on my car so that he didn't have to take his boot straps off. That is akin to an assault in many ways. How dare he touch my painwork. |

It's a tax on the emissions from your vehicle. The proceeds do not go towards maintenance of the roads. |

It’s a bit of both to be honest, the price you pay depends on your omissions. But for the none electric car owners if you do not use your car and don’t declare its sorn, park it off the road you are fine, park it on the road and you still have to tax it even though it’s producing zero omissions, therefore that’s road tax |

Oh so when I'm not using my non-electric car I have to pay tax regardless unless it's sorn? That is correct because there is the potential to use it and produce emissions. If it is Sorn and you are caught using it you're in for a fine.
I do think maybe there is an argument for VED to be applied to fuel so that those who drive more and so pollute more pay more for their emissions but it won't happen because it will impact haulage companies too much and will ultimately hit consumers in increased cost of items. |

This is one of the main issues today. Car drivers that genuinely believe they're more entitled to use the public road than anybody else.
Hopefully attitudes will shift if more pedestrians and cyclists begin to use them.
I've never seen as many cyclists out as I did on Sunday, not even during lockdown so hopefully that's a sign of things to come. |

It’s not the cyclists or the Highway Code that causes me the most anguish on the road it’s these new bloody headlights on cars and the flashing ones cyclists use. Both of which are a major distraction and leave white spots in your eyes… they’re dangerous. |

I've got a 1.6 litre diesel engine. I don't pay emmisions tax. So how is that like "road tax"?
If you use main roads then why not pay tax,insurance like a very one with motors vehicle pays to be on road. If you look the statistics, to many cyclists do claims form local authorities if they have accident on road our they have damages to their bike."
Isn’t that more to do with the fact that local councils don’t maintain the roads well enough for anyone to use than, it’s a bit different hitting a pot hole with a car tyre than it is hitting a pot hole or a loose man hole cover on your bike  |

If everyone is courteous to each other then it’ll all be ok won’t it.
I don’t cycle, but I do drive. I’ve got no issue with giving way to a person crossing the road or giving a cyclist space. I do get irritated when I can’t pass cyclists for an extended period though. I don’t want to drive at 15mph behind a cyclist who insists on cycling in the middle of the road or a pair of cyclists side by side. I’ll wait behind and get cross but many won’t/don’t and will pass unsafely. |

I have not noticed too much difference to be honest. But then again, I don't commute or usually be out during rush hour. In busy towns or cities there can be a constant stream of pedestrians at junctions without a dedicated crossing facility. Could be a problem for traffic turning left or right. Many don't know the new changes or forget. |

Who will MOT the bikes?
Who will insure a cyclists, realistically?
Road tax doesn't exist, our roads are paid out of your council tax.
How will the authorities know who does and does not own a bike? As a child I made mine from bits of others. There isn't an existing list of ownership. There can't be.
Well its quite simple, if you over 15 years and have bike,then you must have bike ID number and its belongs to you . Just as car works. To many bikers think they can do what they like on main roads. If you use road then take full responsibility of highway traffic code. "

This is obviously why we need strict liability for drivers like they have in the Netherlands, drivers are more cautious around cyclists, and that leads to more cycling. So in law drivers are always at fault when they are in a collision with a cyclist, regardless of how the cyclist behaved. A much easier way to administer and police as everyone must agree. The changes in the Highway code are just the first step in that direction. |

Aside from the cycle wars, there are concerns about the new rules for pedestrians crossing at junctions. This is from the web:-
"Can I please point out that those of us working Assistance Dogs and Guide dogs have our dogs trained to wait at kerbs until NO cars are present. Our dogs won't cross with us until cars drive on past. This new rule means drivers will stop and try to wave us across. Please be aware we won't cross the road and you will only hold us up. Best to drive on past if u see a vested working dog knowing this is more helpful to us."

How will the authorities know who does and does not own a bike? As a child I made mine from bits of others. There isn't an existing list of ownership. There can't be.
Well its quite simple, if you over 15 years and have bike,then you must have bike ID number and its belongs to you . Just as car works. To many bikers think they can do what they like on main roads. If you use road then take full responsibility of highway traffic code.
Why 15?
Who checks to see who has a bike? As I have said there is no registration of bikes. Cars are manufactured with a registration plate and chassis number. Bikes are not and never have been.
Who is going to police all this?

When you get nike you should have some sort of frame number. With that number you you be registered.
Just like we do the cars registering,and with your address on it."
That only works for new bikes. What about the MILLIONS already being ridden? From an administrative point of view it's not worth it. Who is going to police it? It won't be cheap to set up, and it won't cover every bike out there. And you still haven't said why you chose the age of 15 as some sort of cut off point and after that you start paying "road tax" (snigger). Do you honestly believe insurance companies are going to insure a 16 year old on the road on a bike that was his older brothers? How is he going to afford the premiums? The devil is in the details and this just doesn't pan out, no matter how much you think it "stands to reason". |

Not sure why car drivers hate being behind cyclists to much. In my part of the world (London zone 3), on average I go far quicker than a car.
I was going down a hill one time and knew that a sharp bend to the left was coming up. I didn't want a car overtaking me on the bend so I went to the middle of the road. An idiot still felt the need to overtake. Almost caused an accident.
I caught up with him at the lights and calmly explained that he's an idiot and it was the safest way to cycle. He disagreed. I caught up with him at the next lights and had the same dispute. |

I used to commute about 10 miles each way on the ring road in rush hour on a hybrid bike, always used the middle of the lane unless I was overtaking cars using the pavement etc. It’s the safest place by far in traffic |

This is a very common misunderstanding, so who does pay for roads? There is no such thing as a road tax. It was abolished in 1937, with the process having been started by a certain Sir Winston Churchill. ... But none of it pays directly for roads - All of it goes into the pot of general government taxation.

Glad you asked! I asked my blind nephew, and this is basically what he said, but a lot more succinct. He likes to talk Blind people rely on tactile and audible signals at zebra crossings, as does the dog. The human feels the knobbly paving stones and knows they're at crossing, as does the dog. The dog will block the human from crossing, but it's up to the human to listen to the traffic. If they decide that it's stopped from the right, they tell the dog and they move on. If the dog disagrees, the dog will stop the human again. They work together. At a t-junction, there are no knobbly paving slabs and this is the first problem - not knowing what the crossing situation is. Secondly, other cars will still be driving past the stopped car when possible and the blind person will not always be able to differentiate the sounds as easily. Car engines, and electric, are so quiet, the human relies more on the swish sound of the tyres. |

More importantly the highway code deals with horses with a max speed of 10 mph when passing and 2 meters. Slightly different than a cyclist but too often drivers ignore the fact that a horse is a "flight" animal with a mind of its own. |

There are reasonable steps to inform the public but it's also assumed that we keep ourselves informed of the highway code, on a regular basis.

If I rang up to book disability assistance, technically they are supposed to provide a taxi to the nearest accessible station. In reality, it's a massive faff, they don't book appropriate vehicles (e.g. that fit your chair in). The taxis turn up whenever, you miss the pre booked train and disability assistance at railway stations is never guaranteed anyway, even if pre booked. It's almost certainly not happening if you miss your pre booked train.
It's way too stressful. The last time, I had to threaten to sit in the doors of the train to force a station person to fetch a ramp to get me off. He said, and I quote "you can't just fucking well turn up and expect us to help." I'd pre booked, but obviously that's beside the point.
I use my car and will do until someone makes it illegal or something. |

It's interesting. With over 36 million drivers, 7.5 million cyclists and who know how many pedestrians. These changes effect over half the population... Would it be sensible to have a public information advert running for a few months which showed the details... Rather like the clunk click every trip one when they changed the highway code / law for seat belts.? |

I am not cyclist, but...I can see some sense in some of the new guidance. However, like all things road related there has to be some care taken. Car drivers will get frustrated if tgey have to follow cyclists for long periods of time, and will take chances to get by...its going to happen...if a cyclist is goading..tgat incidence will happen earlier...lets just all act in a courteous manner to all otherroad users and we'll get on fine. One last thought..following an accident a cyclist may have the law and morality on their side..it will be of little comfort. |

Where I live we don't have an integrated public transport system but Glasgow does and edinburght to some extent.
It is also very expensive, around £4 each way for a 4-5 mile journey.
Glasgow and Edinburgh have a set fair at around £1.60 for 1 stop or 20 stops. That would encourage more people to use public transport.
And from what I have seen the buses and the trams are wheelchair accessible. The underground is a different matter though. |

This is obviously why we need strict liability for the drivers like they have in the Netherlands, drivers are more cautious around cyclists, and that leads to more cycling. So in law drivers are always at fault when they are in a collision with a cyclist, regardless of how the cyclist behaved. A much easier way to administer and police as everyone must agree. The changes in the Highway code are just the first step in that direction. |

It is but you also don't get cyclists ignoring traffic lights, cycling along footpaths, weaving through traffic in countries like Germany and Netherlands where there seems to be a bit more respect for traffic rules and laws. |

And then there’s the question of why a driver would feel that a cyclist should get out the way. The gutter is more dangerous and if we pull in to gaps in parked cars whenever possible we might not get back out.
It may appear goading to the driver, but it’s normally just staking the most sensible place on the road.
That said, there is a lot of bad cycling around.

Turning off a major junction today, car had to stop for a padestrian who wanted to cross the road at a ridiculous position, ignoring the available under pass. I had to stop behind this car. Leaving me very exposed.

I agree there is a lot of bad cycling around. It should be compulsory to sit a test both written and practical before these machines can be ridden.I saw one today riding without hands on the bars cocking a snoot to authority and flaunting the facts that the rules did not apply to him.

I was cycling to work today, waiting at the lights, and another cyclist (who should have been waiting with me) wobbled to the middle of the road and looked like she’d carry straight on into the traffic. The guy next to me turned and said in 30 years cycling in London he’s seen three deaths.
Later on she went straight across a zebra crossing and I saw she was holding her phone.
So yes. An evangelical cyclist I might be, but I accept something has to change. |

"I am not cyclist, but...I can see some sense in some of the new guidance. However, like all things road related there has to be some care taken. Car drivers will get frustrated if tgey have to follow cyclists for long periods of time, and will take chances to get by...its going to happen...if a cyclist is goading..tgat incidence will happen earlier...lets just all act in a courteous manner to all otherroad users and we'll get on fine. One last thought..following an accident a cyclist may have the law and morality on their side..it will be of little comfort.
But it’s often a matter of perception. I can feel that often drivers have an excessive desire to overtake me. I think they have a perception that as a cyclist I’m going slowly. But nearly always they’ll have to slow down in a short while.
On average, in urban areas, I’m faster than cars. So normally when a car does overtake, soon after I’m frustrated at being slowed down.
