Hi all, I'm looking for some advice. I'm really struggling with my birth control. My body seems to be extremely hormone sensitive, I've tried probably 7-8 different combined pills and the mini pill and they all have terrible side effects; mood, weight, achne, irregular painful periods, blood pressure drops, loss of sex drive, and just generally being unwell. I can't use the copper coil due to a medical issue. Because I'm so sensitive to hormones I'm scared to try the other coil, jabs, or implant, but on the other hand if they stopped my periods that would be great.
Over the last few years I've come off things completely for a few months at a time and just relied on the pull out method, but obviously that comes with more risk and my periods are even more painful than when on the pill.
Surgery is feeling like an option but far from an ideal one.
Any advice would be very welcome. I'm going back to my GP too xx |

I had a mirena coil for many years and found it suited me. The hormones are delivered locally making side effects less likely BUT some women don't get on with it at all. I can only suggest that you speak to a professional with an interest in such things (I know how difficult they are to find).
Hope you get some help |

Thank you, I'm revisiting all options to be honest and this time I'm going to be asking my GP for a referral to a gynecologist. Xx |

Yes, potentially. But that's obviously quite extreme and my doctor said they don't like doing it with younger women xx |

I was the same for about 15 years. I only had it removed because I needed LETZ treatment and they said I was too old to need a new one fitted. |

That would be great of the hormones don't give me the other same side effects. It's chemically very similar to the combination pill I believe xx |

I asked at my surgery which nurse or doctor had a specific interest in women's health. It's amazing how the understanding varies between general health professionals. |

The doctor took mine out when I was 57 or 58 because he said I didn't need it any more. |

"Years ago I used to use condoms and a spermicidal gel. "
I've obviously used condoms on occasion, but even the non latex ones dry me out badly and the spermicide that's already on them can give me UTIs and thrush. I don't get on well with them either, or the female one, I always go bare otherwise it's just shit after 2 mins and then for days after.
My body's crap. It really getting me down xx |

I've tried liquid silk and a durex one, it starts ok but then I still then get the rubbing stinging feeling. I've tried a few brands and types. Same results really. Plus I then get the infections half the time a day or two after.
Yes I have Xx |

The implant is progesterone only like the mini pill, depo or IUS (mirena coil). Combined contraceptives include the combined pill, the patch and the vaginal ring (nuvaring). |

The uti thing, is it always an infection or your body's response to sex eg your bladder being sensitive? |

Oh I didn't know that, thanks Lacey. I didn't like the mini pill but it probably was a bit better than the combined ones in terms of side effects. I'll look back into it.
Btw can you please drop me a DM? Xx |

I'm allergic to a lot of lubricants, especially the durex ones. The best I have found is the tenga play gel. It's designed for fleshlights but it works for me so I'm going to carry on . Bonus is the bottles are a decent size as a result . |

The contraceptive jab might suit you, you just need it once every 3 months and I've found the side effects beyond no more periods to be minimal enough.
In terms of the UTIs, are you peeing after sex? I feel like alot of women don't know you're supposed to, I know nobody told me till my 20s and I was UTI central back then |

It can happen occasionally when just having natural bare sex too, but it very often happens with condoms, spermicide, and some lubes. The Durex lube really upset me, but liquid silk seems ok. Xx |

There’s things you’ve said OP that has little warning bells going off in my head… this stinging and rubbing you get for days after have the docs said this is thrush? Because the symptoms could be something else entirely and nothing to do with your issues. If you could PM me, I could explain a little more, but I can’t message your because of your filters and age preferences |

If only there was birth control for men, they stopped it when they found it caused mood swings and weight gain. Obviously unacceptable
I cannot get on with hormone contraception, it’s horrendous for me. Im on nothing at the moment but another baby is in the pipeline very soon. Just condoms and looking to have tubes tied when I’ve had that baby |

I believe it work the same the same as marina but less hormones and has to be changed 3 yearly rather than 5. This is based on information given to me by a friend |

Ok. As I say if you feel it's suitable try using Yes VM daily for a month or so and during sex and see if it helps. There are a few books I wish I'd read when I was young that explain our women's genitals to us and made me realise I should have taken as much care of them as my face.
Good luck with your search for a decent contraceptive I think the fact that you're considering sterilisation says much about women's reproductive care in this country. |

I might be going the same direction as condoms cause me issues too. I don't mind pull out but I still have period problems even off hormonal contraceptives so something that stops them would be ideal. Plus I don't just have sex with my husband. Xx |

It was called Jaydess a few years ago but they might be using a different brand now. A bit like how my local authority uses Levosert instead of Mirena now. They're exactly the same. People just refer to them all as Mirena even though it's a brand name (a bit like with hoovers ). |

If the thrush recurs & the cream stops working then please insist that they refer you to either a gynaecologist or dermatologist for a condition called Lichen Sclerosis the sooner it’s diagnosed & treated the better, but I hope it’s not that X |

The mirena coil has very low dose of hormones and is often used for women who can't have pills due to high hormone concentrations.
The hormones in it normally stop your periods too which is a bonus.
The implant is progesterone only but can be hit and miss re period control and some women use the pill along side to control the bleeding which to me defeats the object.
The only hormone free options would condoms the copper coil or there is the diaphragm or cap but if you have issues with latex these may also not suit you. |

Ask you GP or practice nurse about the DepoProvera injection. Every 12wks 1 wee jag on the butt cheek and it also stopped my bleeding.
I had Marina Coil but took a reaction to it and it was removed.
Combined pill also worked for me but I would def recommend the jag x
Good Luck. It's shit being a woman at times x |

If you're certain you don't want (more) kids and are happy it's right for you just nag until they give in. It may well be their job to not carry out procedures with the risk of regret but it isn't their job to dictate how you live your life. My Ex got it done in her late 20's and says it was the best thing she ever did for contraception. Took a long time nagging but she convinced them in the end.
