I just signed up for a free month trial with netflix so the kids can watch some films whilst away. It then prompted me to download the netflix app but when I tried it said I needed ios5. I searched the internet on how to get it and it seems I should have the option for software update in the settings but can't find it!

Which iPad do you have? Netflix doesn't work on the 1st generation iPads.

If you have a 2nd or 3rd gen model, connect your iPad to iTunes and check for a software update that way.

You need to connect iPad to pc and sign in to your iTunes account, and do a software update. Have recently done mine. Back everything up as you may lose some info or apps that you have already downloaded.

You need a computer to upgrade to iOS 5. Once you have that, all updates can be done on the iPad itself.

iPad 1 can update itself wirelessly but only if it has iOS 5 installed. To get it up to version 5 from a lower version you will need a computer to update it. Or take it into an Apple store they will probably do it for free.

Also as a heads up iPad 1 is not compatible with iOS 6 so 5 is it's last supported version of the operating system.

Software update option only appear once you have the ios 5 installed. You will need a pc or go into an apple store who will do this for you.

I'm sure that's right?

I think its very out of date that option was put in a while back maybe a friend with a pc could let you access itunes, once it has installed that option it should be ok to run without a pc.
