I see on the news the Yanks are auctioning a polar bear hunt, where you can bid for the right to go and shoot a polar bear!

What do grabbers think about perhaps having a “trophy hunter hunt auction” where you can bid for the right to go and shoot a trophy hunter?

I would bid all my savings on a chance to do that

I thought Polar Bears were becoming endangered due to warming of the Icy areas where they live?

Or did I dream that?

I don't like the idea of any of these trophy hunting holidays etc, I would however like to see the hunter and hunted in unarmed combat in a fair fight for survival. It sickens me to the stomach when you see the photos of the results of the organised hunts.

No but unfortunately the rarer the animal the more they want to kill one before they go extinct

I don't think people should kill polar bears.

I don't think people should kill people either.

Why anyone would want to shoot an animal, any animal, for 'sport' is beyond my comprehension

They are

This auction is to raise money In order to fight the UK government plants of to introduce the ban of animal "Trophies" coming into the country. As polar hunts are rare it should raise big bucks for their cause.

I shoot vermin and game.

Do I want to exterminate a particular species - NO

Do I think (big game) trophy hunting should be banned - YES.

If their is no revenue raised by big game shooting then the farmers and poachers will take over the unprotected land and kill the big game anyway.

Rangers are local people

So if we don’t allow ‘legal’ murder , the only alternative is illegal murder?

Strange argument to use to justify murder!

Anyway apologies… this is maybe way too emotive to post into the lounge, perhaps I should just keep my contributions nice and light

In some ways auctioning it off makes sense as the funds go to support the local rangers. They end up shooting a lot of polar bears as they are now seeing towns as easy prey and are a danger, this is due to milder winters which means less ice so they head south.

In Southern African nature reserves these kind of hunts are fairly common. Given they are closed environments occasionally culls of certain species are needed to maintain a balance. Instead of the park rangers just doing it they sell the hunt to wealthy hunters and the revenue is used to aid conservation efforts. Which strikes me as a much better alternative to illegal hunts or poaching without any thought given to the ecosystem.
