You don't need one.

Do you want one?

They're good company and can be very amusing. However, they can be expensive, they can damage things, they live up to 20-odd years so are a long-term commitment, they can cause problems with neighbours if they don't like cats, and they mean you have to make arrangements for them if you want to go away, even just overnight.

I wouldn't be without mine though.

little house on the praire

I wouldnt be without my cat, she was naughty the other day but in general shes very good. I had two but one was killed. Soon as i got them i showed them the cat litter tray and let them have a sniff and never had an accident. If your going to get a kitten remember they will be boiserous. Have you thought about getting an older one from an animal rescue.

I feed mine dry food so all they cost is a box of food and cat litter. Very easy to look after. How old is your son? If its his idea maybe give him the responsiblity of looking after it.

Or why not try short term fostering a cat and see how you get on with it

We loves our babies.

We lost our beloved cat a few weeks back.

The house seemed so empty without him, we weren't going to get another but saw two little boys in the RSPCA website and drove over an hour to get them.

They were 11 weeks old when we got them a couple of weeks ago and we adore them, couldn't be without them.

So we are definitely saying yes!

"I feed mine dry food so all they cost is a box of food and cat litter. Very easy to look after."

Flea treatment? Stronghold, which also does worms and ear mites is a significant cost when calculated annually.

Annual MOT, dental check and vaccination boosters? £70 for my two last time, I think.

Vets bills if they get ill? Even with insurance the excess is at least £100

Mine cost over £100/month in all.

Essex.

So if one of my kids climbed in to your garden, shat every where, ripped open your bin bags, killed wild birds and attacked your chickens that would be ok?

I agree cats can be good company, however I'm sick of them. How is it right some one can buy an animal let it run free causing mess and damage in my garden yet there is hardly anything I can do. Also any thing I do to stop the cats costs me time and money... How is that fair?

Things you are missing by not having a cat:-

The constant smell of crap in your home.

Shredded curtains and furniture.

The peace and quite of a garden where all birds are dead.

The need to get home to feed it, which is a pain when you get invited to

Barbados for a week, but really annoying when you have a great meet in Skegness that overruns into a weekend.

Vet Bills

and many other things.

Don't get a cat, get a friend who has a cat which you can go and stroke from time to time

If you foster a cat you can do long or short term fostering. They pay all the vets bills and sometimes pay the foood and bedding as well. Its something ive started looking into as im thinking about doing it

Lol...I've kind of done this with my friends dog! Would love a pet, but just wouldn't have the time to look after one properly so I have never got one.

OP...I guess it depends on whether you have the time, energy and patience to get one and let it adjust to your home

Just had our 2 vaccinated, wormed & flea stuff for £54.

We use dry and wet food.

Food does cost quite a lot, as do the "start up" costs, eg bed/litter tray/toys/scratch post etc

But after that, food once a week and litter every month.

We both think what we spend on all our animals is worth it

Our house doesn't stink of cat poo, and none of our cats have shredded anything, we still have birds in our garden and the next door neighbour looks after ours when we are away

Oh mine are definitely worth it. And I do have two that are quite expensive to run because they need a certain type of food which isn't cheap. They are also insured which is expensive since they are both 11 now (getting on a bit for their breed).

I adopted them aged 6 after they were rescued, nearly dead, following a lifetime of abuse and neglect. I promised them then that they'd be spoilt, pampered pets for the rest of their days. They are.

I am lucky in that neither the cat or the dog likes to claw/chew the furnitures.

Oh heck i'm even more undecided now! Many thanks for all the replies.

I like the idea of short term fostering it would maybe give me chance to see if I can cope with a moggy and visa versa...

You can have mine for a couple of weeks. She's old, sick and smelly. I love her but don't like her and if you took to her you could keep her.

Have you got ten years or so to look after the cat?

Have you got the money for vet bills and emergencies?

Can you have the freedom you need if you had the cat?

Can you afford the everyday things the cat needs?

Will you be able to do the things you do without the cat?

i saw some kittens in pet shop and wanted one they were gorgeous, only they cost £250 and hubby said no.

our neigbour doesnt like them because they poo in his garden, but some people train them to poo in a dirt box and you can keep them in at night so they dont kill so many birds or get run over.

Boisterous is an understatement our 3 decide every day at 3am that the stairs become a playing field and run up and down seeing who can sound like an elephant most

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

I wouldn`t be without my 6 year old torty rescue cat. She`s great company for my Mum while I`m at work. She greets me when I come home at work, kills a few of the rats then come into the garden from next-doors and she is a "talker", a real torty trait I`ve been told. Thankfully I`m out in the sticks so it`s relatively quiet where I am but she did get injured by a car last year and the vets bill was quite steep. I get my flea treatment from the vets (don`t bother with the Bob Martins crap from the super-racket!) and apart from food and cat litter she doesn`t cost much at all! Yes, as cat is a tie and you need to check with your neighbours as well.

Finally, NEVER give your cat milk or cream as the lactose will destroy their kidneys.
