I'm off to the opticians later and was thinking about when I went a few years back. Got talking to the optician and she mentioned that I had two lazy eyes. She said it was fine as they cancelled each other out so didn't need anything doing to them.

Now I've been wearing glasses since I was 4 and to be told aged 30 that I had lazy eyes was quite a shock. Fairly amusing too, plus it explained why I've always gone cross eyed so easily.

So what have you discovered about yourself later in life that surprised you?

Hefty Hideaway

I’ve always had a speech impediment but it was only when I got married to a chap with lots of ‘L’s’ in his surname…

I realised that I couldn’t actually say words or names or sentences with repeated L’s like ‘regularly’. I kept my surname.

That the hearing issues I thought I had aren't actually to do with my ears they are down to a trait of autism, meaning multiple sounds overload the brain so it stops processing them.

Did they say what caused it?

I had an sterilisation procedure and during the initial ultrasound scan my consultant asked how my pregnancies were? I said fine with not too many complications

He went on to say that I was lucky to have two healthy babies and give birth normally. I asked what he meant and he said "you know you have a bi cornuate uterus ?" Um no, I didn't I was 44 years old when I discovered that.

In a town full of colours

I discovered last year that I unknowingly clench my teeth when stressed when the dentist told me.

First dentist ever to notice the ridges in my front teeth

I was 31 when my dentist told me I still have a baby tooth.

I had a baby tooth removed at 16 because it had no root and was only held in place by the teeth either side of it. One of which is the surviving baby tooth but that dentist didn't mention the other one.

As far as I know it just means I have weak eye muscles. People who have just one get to wear an eye patch to build up the weak eye so it doesn't look in a different direction. I guess I got comparatively lucky that I got two. I'm guessing I was born with it.

I'd never heard of that uterus issue before either. You'd think they would have mentioned it while you were pregnant as something to keep an eye on

I asked this and it can be hard to detect so far into pregnancy.

I did not know that, and that's very interesting to know.

Earlier this year I was at the dentist for a check up, had an x-ray that showed one of my molars had ridiculously underdeveloped roots that made the dentist think it might be a baby tooth.

I don't know how many xrays I've had on that section of teeth (a lot), but no dentist has ever shown me that or told me about it.

I realised, in my mid forties, that I was autistic. It was quite a “lightbulb” moment, and explained a lot about me and why I struggle with some things people find easy, and excel at other stuff most people can’t do.

^^^ That’s misophonia. It’s very common in autistics.

That the genetic condition I have is type 1 Syndactyly. Basically I have webbed toes. I never knew the correct medical term until a couple of years ago.

It’s from my dad, but I’m the only one of his children with it. The skin between my second and third toe is fused together up to half way up, the bones are not. My oldest daughter has it up to a quarter of the way up, my youngest doesn’t have it at all. My oldest is severely autistic, and a friend tried to say her having webbed toes are an indication of it, so I must be too, but that isn’t true. It doesn’t indicate autism.

I am a bit self conscious about it, and sadly meant I couldn’t do the toe ring phase, lol.

Also, despite jokes being made that i must be a great swimmer, like a duck, I am actually a weak swimmer, lol x

Viv xx

Some interesting answers. Seems dentists aren't very good at sharing information

Another one from me. My brother broke his ankle some years ago and when he got it x-rayed they asked when he'd broken it before. He didn't know he had. But he did remember hurting it when he tripped over as a child and limping for weeks. He remembers our parents telling him off for faking a limp

I am a couple of points off of being classed as hypermobile as a kid I used to be able to lock my feet together behind my head, I only found this out after seeing a specialist for back and knee pain who noticed I have horizontal stretch marks at the base of back and asked if I was able to bend forward and place the palms 9f my hands on the floor without bending my knees which I can and apparently shouldn't be able to
