For those that insist it's all about science and calories you can happily stick to your NHS mantra.

But this thread is about losing weight. Not assuming people that are fat are just greedy pigs. There is soooo much more to weight lost than any thin person can ever know

I am definitely up for losing some pounds - I do get that too f I cut down drinking it also cuts down my eating as don’t snack as much.

If I add on more exercise then I should be in a good place.

Currently a stone overweight - let’s see where I am in 3 months time.

Any tips or motivation on offer will be gratefully received….

From the first thread "We were lied to about the science and the food industry took up the ball and ran." by No new Winks.

This sums it up nicely for me

Another quote "They actually are essential.... for your entire body not just your brain!"

This has been another NHS mantra for a long time. It's actually not true.

Any cited documents will be from the NHS or a cereal company.

Anyway, as I said this thread is about support and motivation.

If you want to argue about what dieting means please start your own thread.

What we need to do here is do what works for us and not be dictated to about fat shaming 'science'

I simply hope that my story will motivate and inspire others. I had the grim reaper whispering in my ears, and he told me to get my shit together. I genuinely think that there’s no situation that a person can be in, that can’t be improved if you put your mind to it.

I’m more than happy to motivate and share my take with others if they wish.

Many ways to lose weight, some are more life changing than others, we have both undertaken WLS here, and the results are unbelievable. Not the route for everyone but those that struggle is an option that can be obtained via the NHS. In theory I should hit my goal this year only 3.5 stone to go!

Totally agree there are different ways for everyone.

I was offered WLS years ago by a nasty little man that ignored what I was saying and kept asking me how many packets of crisps I ate a day

After complaining I did my research and found a well respected endocrinologist instead

I'm making changes to try and get healthy I'm never going to be a skinny mini but I can get healthy. My car died in November so I walk to work now it's not far but apathy and a steep hill came into play so I walk now.

Sod the gym too many disgusted glances from the gym bunnies for my liking.

I cracked a couple of ribs last year a trip to A&E flagged a couple of serious health issues, I dare not tell my wife it'll scare her. So all healthy food now I'll try to get my mind healthy (I'm a catastrophic thinker) and i witnessed a very traumatic incident a few years ago which never leaves my head, hopefully my body will follow the healthy mantra. Sorry for unloading once I started I carried on.

Any way yep I'm up for getting healthy!

My goal is getting to under 10% body fat.

At a guess I’d say that will take about 20lbs of fat to lose.

No time limit, but shouldn’t take too long. Once I reach it I’ll see if I want to go further. Prior to lockdown I got down to maybe 7-8%

I've got Innotech scales that show your body fat amount.

Are you using something like that to measure? Or something much cleverer?

I tried the fancy scales once and found they were too inconsistent for me. The callipers never lie, and they’re so cheap

I’ve got everything ready. I use a spreadsheet for tracking my daily weight and calories. The old adage “what’s not tracked can’t be managed” is something I follow

I’ve got a few premade meal ideas set up. Nothing crazy, just simple go to meals I know I enjoy and fit well within my diet. A few breakfast ideas, a couple lunches ones

My goal is to keep protein high and let fats/carbs fall where every they may.

In the past I’ve found IF to help me manage hunger in the evenings, but it’s also left me with less energy at work. This time I’ll be trying to bias calories towards the end of the day, not fasting in the morning, just limiting my breakfast/lunch portions in favour of a bigger dinner

Thinking of meals ahead is one of my stumbling blocks.

Fasting has a lot of good press, and it is reasonable natural for humans.

I started my weight loss journey straight after Christmas, didn’t want to wait till the new year. I’m currently 3lbs down. I will say however that for me to lose weight I have to reduce my calorie intake down to 1200 calories, I have not found another way that works and I have tried a few.

I am having a conundrum though, I don’t always crave breakfast and am told it’s really important to eat. Is this true? Can I live on 2 larger meals a day if I find that more satisfying or am I setting myself up for failure?

For me fasting is just a way of beating my habits

When do I get hungry and snack? In the evenings

When don’t I have time to get hungry and snack? In the morning and at work

So if I can take some calories from breakfast and lunch and save them up for in the evenings, I can hopefully eliminate any snackcidents

For me it’s all about identifying habits and finding methods to stop myself.

Another one is not buying certain foods I know I can’t control. I’d love crisps, but I know I can’t just have 1 packet. So I don’t buy them

No current evidence suggest skipping any meal is harmful

As long as you feel ok, keep at it. Lots of people practise intermittently fasting daily, where they skip breakfast and lunch.

Well done in the 3lbs! Nice little head start on 2022

I am in no way an expert, but the 3 meals a day is just a marketing ploy to me.

On YT there and plenty of people that eat fewer meals as part of weight loss.

I've always heard that you must have breakfast but I truly cannot face it.

If you Google Micheal Moseley he talks about limiting eating to between 10 am and 8pm. A shorter time frame for 3 meals?

Ah breakfast my most hated meal of the day, I can't stand it! However it's supposed to kick start your metabolism, not sure how that works really, but I guess if you have it early your have more of the day where you are burning more calories, not a scientists so have no idea really, but there is that other saying breakfast like a king and supper like a pauper suggesting your should have the biggest meals earlier in the day and go lighter throughout the day, but still can't see how it actuLly works just means you will not have a full digestive system at night so should weigh lighter in the morning.... Who knows

I think for the breakfast thing it depends on what one has.

Something supposedly good, like cereal will actually raise your blood sugar and then the after effects.

Something more substantial, with protein, might keep you properly full for longer?

For myself if I have a 'proper' brunch I feel better all day. But I don't go to the trouble to make one

I'm in for this! As of this morning I've lost ten stones, three pounds from my heaviest weight. I need to find the motivation to continue losing weight - for me that means no more purchasing unhealthy food because I know I'll eat it all when sad, IF because my pcos seems to be less of a bugger when I do it and minimizing carbs due to bloating and general feelings of crapness.

I've already compiled a shopping list with easily prepared meals that are low calorie and I'm going to have to stop purchasing sugary festive drinks.

For me it's also about addressing the root of why I overeat so I'm going to add in meditation. Hoping to lose about two stones by April. Maybe more.

I know this isn't for everyone but I lost 5 stone from October 2020 - March 2021 from doing Keto and Low Carb.

I found it easy to follow and I tried everything and couldn't stick to it. I was always full up, still ate sweet treats and had a good balance of all food groups. This was without any exercise too although my job was being on my feet all day.

HOWEVER, May 2020 I stopped and put it all back on again, not because of Keto, but because I wasn't eating properly! oops.

Guess I should try again as I'd like to.

I am just starting on a two week detox (I use the word loosely) before re engaging the diet. Basically just counting calories and doing more exercise for me. I went from quite an active job to a very sedentary office job. Since then the habits haven’t changed and the tummy has a little more than it used too.

Limiting myself to 800-1200 calories a day. Meal prepping and bull buying to make it a little cheaper. And forcing my stubborn dog to come out for a walk as well lol.

Careful with the 800-1200 calorie limit! That's quite restricting for your age and could hinder your progress too.

You only need a 500 calorie deficit minimum to lose weight so even 1500 a day would be great for you!

I gained weight a few years ago and then spent 6 months on a calorie deficit to lose it, I lost a stone. Over lockdown I managed to gain it all back and then some so by May last year I’d had enough again and went back on the calorie deficit. I’ve lost two stone now so I’m close to target. I gained a couple of pounds in the run up to christmas so I need to lose that again but I feel so much better about my body and my confidence has soared!

Yeah it’s something I keep an eye on. Basically I meal prep three meals somewhere along those lines and then if I feel a little groggy or peckish I can continue to snack on fruit, veggie snacks or a Starbucks lol

"My goal is getting to under 10% body fat.

At a guess I’d say that will take about 20lbs of fat to lose.

No time limit, but shouldn’t take too long. Once I reach it I’ll see if I want to go further. Prior to lockdown I got down to maybe 7-8%

Do you know how very hard it is to get down to 10% good luck."

I’ve done it before so I think I can do it again

Well, I weighed in with my coach this morning, not the worst result in the world. I’ve not trained properly for 6 weeks after illness and injury. Throw in Christmas excesses. It’s added up to a gain of 2kg. Not a huge drama, and I’ll shift that in no time at all.

Same here, I’m at 112kg. Been gradually increasing my food for the last six months. I did hit 110, got a stomach bug and dropped back to 105.

As long as I don’t go over 115 before end of the month I’m happy with how things have went

I compete at 198 so I think I can definitely gain some before losing again.

"I'm in for this!

Maybe more. "

Well done Meli . You raise two excellent points as well.

PCOS is a nightmare for those of us with it as it make losing weight even harder.

And medication can also play havoc with weight loss

For us routine worked wonders.

Started slimming world in August 2018 with a very very unrealistic goal but it was something to aim for.

Following slimming world was kind of easy but you soon get to know what works for you and what doesn't.

Just short of a year we both reached our targets which shocked us both as we didn't think it was possible ever.

Sadly due to lockdown and change of routine we have both slowly piled some of it back on.

Going to restart again very shortly

You can achieve the unacheivable

That hard bit is starting, especially training or going to the gym. Set a time everyday to train 4-5 times per week and don't deviate from it. After a couple of weeks you don't have to 'make' the time you will just do it and feel guilty if you don't.

I've set tomorrow night to go out running, something I haven't every really done. But it's because gyms are too dangerous just now.

I'm trying but getting 3 healthy meals in when I'm working is proving hard as morning I'm normally at a clients house around 7 or travelling to one .. lunch is only one I find easy as I do split shifts. Evening I'm out an about between 4 n 10pm sometimes I might get time to pop home eat while doing a bit of computer stuff . I have started walking again did 5 miles on Sunday which also helps me with my stress level

Trying to get my head around the amount of fats compared to protein and trying to work out a meal plan.

Back properly lifting weights and dance class later this week.

Have a few kilos to loose, but would be a lot happier if the inches go before the kgs.

Hi all, apologies for not logging in much.

The message I've taken from the last few posts is that one has to find a solution that works for them.

Otherwise it doesn't happen.

I've lost my December 4kg but it was only fluid anyway.

If it's food cravings, the best thing to do is eat green stuff like salad or vegetables. They are surprisingly filling

"If anyone wants to reach out and send me meal ideas for keto then please do"

Pinterest is loaded with Keto recipes.

Think of it in its simplest terms. Eat decent proteins like eggs, good meat or fish.

And lots of non-starchy vegetables, green in other words.

The old 'meat and two veg' works as long as your vegetables are not starchy.

Another way to look at it is to look up the Glycemic Index (GI) of foods. High GI means high sugar, even natural ones.

I disagree wholeheartedly. A lot of 'fat' can be water retention.

Medications can pile on weight.

An under active thyroid can pile on weight.

PCOS can pile on weight.

As I said earlier, the NHS count calories because you're a lazy pie muncher mantra is long past useless.

I am having a conundrum though, I don’t always crave breakfast and am told it’s really important to eat. Is this true? Can I live on 2 larger meals a day if I find that more satisfying or am I setting myself up for failure?

"I have lost 4kg since Christmas, I have been following slimming world. I don't ever go hungry but have to cut out everything I love. Alcohol is the hardest thing to stop. Looks like a quiet few months. "

I'm following slimming world and still eat everything I love, just cooked with alternative ingredients... I have literally not given up anything, even alcohol.

you're doing well though, so keep at it

"sorry KM not been posting... but hopefully back!

I lost 1.5lbs this week at weigh in, but I do think im finding it so much harder as I get nearer my target, not to stay on plan but it's just less weight to come off I suppose... but it's fine it's still happening and I have managed to get back into my early morning walks which for me really help, in body and mind!

Rabbit x

The last part is the hardest. Unless you forget the wight goal number and go on how you feel and how your clothes fit "

oh I feel pretty damn good and have gone from a size 22 to a 12/14 - cost me a fortune in replacing clothes every few months though haha!

I'm on a mission to lose 10 pounds by the time the warmer weather comes.

I know it's not much but it means I'll be able to wear the cute dresses I have in my wardrobe and feel good in them.

What works for me is tracking my progress. I use the Noom app. Its worked out daily calorie allowance for me to hit my target by May.

It has a graph of progress made, the line on a downwards trend and I find that encouraging.

Only on day 2 but I've already lost 0.6 pounds.

Fingers crossed ??

This is am interesting thread, can I ask does everyone gauge weight lost by the number it says on the scales? And this alone?

Well I know I need to lose a few kgs. After getting in shape for holiday last year and feeling good about myself on the beach, I had a photo taken at the weekend and realised just how much I had pu on in such a short space of time.

As long as I feel ok about how I look I tend to not use the scales. Need to stop the snacking and takeaways.

For me, I'll get on the scales if my clothes feel looser

definitely gauge 'weight loss' by weighing on the scales, but there are so many other signs of a healthier body, loss of inches, reduced clothes size, better hair and skin and just feeling physically and emotionally improved.

it's a whole body journey for me.

Okay after 2 to 3 weeks of wallowing in self pity , I'm getting back on it.

Struggling as feel fat and then eating because I do.. which means I've pretty much undone half my work I've done over Christmas and new year.

Drawn a line..starting again x

This is my interim target date.. what's annoying me is since a week before Christmas I'd lost 27lb. Now put back on 15lb in 2 weeks ( not 100% sure thats all just bad choices though as medically sometimes I have weight gains for what seems like no reason)

Good news all round then, even Cali if you're feeling motivated

I myself am still at this wall weight, I cannot seem to get past it. Then it is winter and we can be bears

Sorry feel like I posted and then disappeared.

I asked this as I myself was into weight loss and was doing this through sole calorie counting and exercising more. The closer I got to my target weight and my fitness increased my actual body weight increased and muscle mass got bigger. So it was frustrating seeing this.

That said the point I'm trying to make for anyone that's on the journey of losing weight and its seems to have stopped and your still "being good" then don't be disheartened as I would imagine you are actually still cutting body fat and it might take a more technical set of scales to calculate this for you.

It's an interesting journey but one that can take over you if you let it.

Always good to chat to people to get motivations and keep pushing.

I'm addicted to Cherry Lucozade

I've lost 1.8kg by following a low Fodmap diet.

That's from necessity not choice, and it's been difficult adjusting.

I started drinking the Lucozade when I first got ill as I was totally exhausted from constant stomach problems and pain.

I don't eat much actual food, as I'm still trying to work out my menu and must avoid foods.

Wheat and onions are a big trigger so most of my old diet is gone. Last night I tried a wrap with ham and mayonnaise (I ran out of lettuce) and I seem ok so far.

I've managed to go from nearly 19 stone 3 years ago to 12 now.

It's been a journey.

Diets don't work (imo). I looked at portion sizes. Also cutting down on crisps and mars bars. I used to think a packed lunch needed these...... Also being full and not clearing your plate.

Knowing what's in your food is important. Also things like understanding I have to run 5k to burn off a mars bar..... Crikey.

I took up running. Being clear I started with no experience of it. I needed to cycle at the gym first before the treadmill. Then onto roads with a local club. All about the distance not speed.

Now I compete in local championships.

If anyone wants support or advice on breaking in running to help please feel free to hit me up.

It's obviously not for everyone and I wish you all the best in your journeys.

I'm 2.5 stone heavier than I was before lock down. I don't want to lose that much but want a stone off. Calories in/out. Not eating crap and weight training worked for me so going to go along those lines. I used to go to the gym 6 days a week. I don't go now. I also used to do 7 cleaning jobs along side my main job. I don't do that many now.The biggest thing I want to change is the amount of crap I eat and I used to spring out of bed where now I could literally lie in bed all morning. I have a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit after every meal which is just habit. My motivation is feeling better and to fit into some of my clothes. Wish me luck
