There's a vegan thread going too here https://www.fabswingers.com/forum/lounge/1249908 That also has weight loss benefits " I’d say cutting out processed stuff is the biggest step anyone could take in terms of diet That processed stuff, it’s fun, but it’s just no good

"I find tracking what I eat helps, using something like MyFitnessPal. Keeps you more mindful of what you eat. Also move more. Ultimately, the only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you take on (calorie deficit), over an extended period of time. 1kg of fat is about 7,700 kcal, so if you’re in calorie deficit every day, you’ll slowly but surely achieve it. Don’t make huge drastic changes, as it’s much more difficult to keep them up. The best diet is the one you can stick to… " 100% this A moderate calorie deficit on a diet you can tolerate and maintain Nothing fancy, nothing exotic. Just plain of consistency

Carbs aren’t the enemy, excess calories are If it works great, but the key word is “sustainable” Ask yourself if cutting out all carbs forever is sustainable for yourself " I agree with this. You just need to make sure that the calories you take in are less than the calories you burn. Any “diet” is meaningless if you don’t do this. You can increase the calories you burn through with simple things such as just walking more. Park your car a few hundred meters further away than you would normally do. Things like that really add up over time and are actual quite easy to add into your life.

Each time I get so far and then start to think back to this.

But my opinion is that that method has been recommended for decades and the population has only gotten fatter. We are not all lazy pie munchers as the NHS assumes. All the low-fat stuff that started in the 80s, and we still got fatter... It is slowly becoming accepted that sugar is the real enemy. Sugar being anything that turns to glucose in the body.

Just treat every day as a new start and see if you can hit your calorie goals for that day. Being as consistent as you can is what will work over the long term." Very true

Be healthy be happy and don't make yourself ill tryin to achieve wot you believe you should look like cos of wot social media portrays. And small changes can make big differences. Take pics and measurements b4 you start so you can a diffrence down the line when you think you havnt changed.dont be on the scales every day obsessing neither you only dishearten yourself. And you may weigh yourself and not be loosing weight. That can be down to fat being turned into muscle as muscle weighs more. I’ve just started a virtual challenge from Lands End to John O’Groats and I’ll be counting my swimming, walking and rowing to make the 1774km in one year to complete! Last year I just followed the science of eat less, move more! Ate raw, as in minimal processed foods, and cut out the picky late night eating crap! It was hard at first but even after a few weeks I noticed the difference. I’d love to join you all Pixie " Well done Pix x

Get your heart beat raised and every day do a little bit more .. get yourself some light weights or even use things around the house like bags of sugar or bottles of water. Get some music playin that gets you moving that you can get a cardiovascular workout goin . Don't eat late at night, cut certain foods out like bread and things that will bloat you. But if you want a cheat day then choose it maybe a day at weekend . You don't have to make massive changes or make yourself miserable

" starving yourself all day isn't the best option neither. Your body will kind of think to itself that it doesn't know when it's goin to get food again so it will store fat and eat away at muscle tissue . Small meals regular and never skip breakfast..breakfast is most important meal of the day. Don't forget you have been asleep for 5,6,7 hours with no food and we need energy to burn

Some people work better on little and often, others in three main meal, it’s individual but you won’t go in to starvation mode. My best exercise advice would be swimming... all over workout, cardio and extremely supportive of joints and muscles. Then move on to walking, gym etc but be careful with running as it puts a lot of excess pressure on knees & ankles so if you’re overweight or not active usually then you’ll feel it in those places. Also if you are walking a lot, comfy trainers but google how to tie your laces as there’s 3 different ways to tie them depending on your foot spread! Pixie xx

If anyone wants to join in with goals, hints, tips and mostly support that would be great " If you're not eating much during the day (or at all) have a look at something like huel... I used huel for a few months for breakfast and lunch before my gastric bypass... I was very much like you and found that grabbing a shake for breakfast and a pot of 'hot and savoury' (a bit like a healthy pot noodle) was super easy to do, and meant I didn't feel overly hungry while keeping under 1200 calories a day.

Was that only whilst prepping for your surgery? I have a slim fast shake for breakfast as I just can’t face food early morning! I'm only 11 weeks post op so I'm still getting back into eating food... I can have the hot and savory and the huel complete bars (although I'm not a fan of the textures or tastes of the bars) but the shakes trigger a mild form of dumping syndrome (heart palpitations, nausea, dizzyness and upset tum) which is a pain because they are vegan so easier (in theory) to absorb than the whey based protein shakes I'm currently having for breakfast and lunch. Avocado is my other current nope... which is also an arse cause Avocado and poached egg is my favourite breakfast

I work on a 500 calorie deficit for my TDEE/BMR... because I exercise almost everyday I need more calories than if I didn’t but still have my deficit Pixie x" I opted for huel over slimfast because huel is so well balanced and I knew I needed to enter the surgery process with the best start from a vitamin level etc... more calories but good calories if that makes sense... I know what works for me to loose weight, high protein, low gi carbs and a calorie deficit of over 1000 a day (the joys of pcos, insulin resistance and meds that cause weight gain...) Surgery for me is a tool to help with that (cause a 1000 calorie a day deficit is hard work)... surgery can also reset your endocrine system and completely reverses pcos in 95% of women within 12 months so I'm really crossing my fingers that I'm in the 95%

I can go all day without food, and forget to eat, then at about 8 I get hungry, start cooking, then I’m not eating until gone 9. I’d love to try and break the cycle. (Procrastinating on here doesn’t help )yeh eating late isnt good for you if your tryin to loose the weight " That's actually a myth. Intermittent fasting is very good, it promotes autotophagy for a start but if evening eating consists of a meal then snacking until bed, that's a problem. OMAD is a good standard.

We don't eat carbs but we don't limit our food either. Both of us are extreme in our lifestyle changes but it doesn't have to be that way. I was keto for 12 years and now carnivore for two. Accept that higher does not have to be fixed unless you want it to and concentrate on proper food, no packets or quick fixes. Keto diets go a long way to this by reducing carbs. You get no insulin spike if you eat fats and protein, only if you eat carbs. This then lows you to take control of hunger because low insulin does not trigger hunger. I personally eat no carbs...but small amounts of whole food low carb veg like broccoli, cauliflower, avocados, olives and some cabbages are able to be eaten without issue. I can point you towards a number of references that can reassure you of why this works. But I lost weight eating bacon and eggs for bfast and steaks with prawns cooked in cream sauces. Delicious. As these foods are easily absorbed by the body my inflammation went away and so my arthritic knees and other joints feel like I am 25 again. No aches or pains. All this without any exercise other than an hour walk a day on top of normal activity. The eat less/do more school has failed for 50 yrs. People are fatter and sicker from eating low fat and high carb. Calorie deficit causes metabolic issues that result in weight regain after a "diet". I eat delicious, satiating food each day. I am not hungry. I never feel like I am on calorie restriction...because I am not. I can go a day or 2 without eating if I need to. I can sit next to chocolate, sweets, cakes etc. and not want any. They are unappetising. I am aware that I sound like a crazy but...I have a degree in Sports Science...I have worked in clinical environments...I, to my shame, espoused the low-fat/reduced calorie theory whilst giving info lectures to patients for years. We were lied to about the science and the food industry took up the ball and ran. Low or zero carb diets are how our ancestors ate. We evolved over millions of years eating this way. It is safe and optimal for humans. And it is easily sustainable after only a few weeks of discipline. Go on, give it a month. You have nothing to lose and health to gain.

For the next few weeks make your own food from those whole foods listed. The first 2 or 3 weeks will be the difficult ones but you'll feel better in days. Measure yourself. Weight means nothing and fluctuates it also leads to anxiety. Concentrate on how you feel. Feel free to message me or Topsy about any info you want. " It’s not sustainable for everyone... I ended up in hospital after following keto for only 5 weeks. Everyone needs to find what works for them... the best start quite simply is eat less move more. "I've done the less than 2000 calories, exercise daily, no alcohol, eaten healthy, no processed foods etc etc and either put weight on or remained the same. Day 3 of a keto diet and already feel better. Yes it's a bit of a challenge avoiding the carbs and made me look at food in a different way. Trying to work out the best low carb food but being a bit nerdy, I find it interesting. Best bits for me are trying new recipes and not feeling hngry. See how it goes when I'm back at work and travelling. " I’m interested to know why you chose less than 2000 calories whilst you were exercising? Being a man you need more calories, exercising you need more calories. Did you use a TDEE/BMR calculator? This is one issue I’ve seen over and over again where people don’t eat enough and then say they don’t lose weight. There’s so many ‘diets’ out there but you need something sustainable to make those lifelong healthy choices Pixie

"One apple...5 teaspoons of sugar. The body only has 1 teaspoon of sugar in the bloodstream at any time. The rest goes to fat cells. Fructose is more fat depositing than normal sugar before anyone says. So, is it a "good start" or have you just switched off fat burning and moved to a sugar based metabolic pathway that stops the body working optimally ? 5 teaspoons? What size apples are you eating Average apple has slightly under 2 tea spoons of natural sugar 25g of carbohydrates. This breaks down to sugar in the body. All carbs are sugars. " But there’s good carbs and bad carbs, the body needs carbs to survive. You can’t live on no carbs for sustainability Pixie

"Couldn’t be doing with all these fads and depriving myself. Everything in moderation, a bit of commons sense and exercise (even just walking a lot) has always worked for me for losing weight and toning up. " *common

Our brains get the energy it needs from protein via gluconeogenesis. If carbs were essential, I would have died 14 years ago!

"“ "Calories in, calories out" and macronutrient intake: the hope, hype, and science of calories Scott Howell et al. Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab. 2017.” The CHO-insulin hypothesis predicted that lowering dietary CHO significantly should cause insulin levels to fall, leading to release of fat from adipocytes that would 1) increase fat loss and 2) increase EE to claimed amounts in the range of =350 cal/day (range 400–600). Neither of these effects was observed in two current and highly rigorous metabolic ward studies, one of which was the actual NuSI study being discussed. Weight gain or loss is not primarily determined by varying proportions of CHO and fat in the diet, but instead by the number of calories ingested. Changes in EE, which metabolic pathways are used and other considerations are quite modest when compared with caloric intake. Until high-quality, metabolic ward primary data become available indicating otherwise, a calorie is still a calorie." I can point you to numerous references that argue to the contrary. But, and this I fear will fall on deaf ears, you really have to want to explore the current thinking. Start with Dr Paul Mason on YouTube. Then move on to the numerous lectures on Low Carb Down Under channel on YouTube. Again all eminent scientists, doctors and surgeons. All going through the "science" of low fat. My fav is Dr Zoe Harcombe and her explanation of calories. Like I say, its all there and it has taken the avenues of YouTube to allow it out there. But you have to want to listen. I didn't at first but I couldn't ignore it anymore. I am now going to shut up. Stay healthy and wholefood guys.

Look at gluconeogensis, it's the body's way of extrapolating the miniscule amount it needs from protein. Humans do not need carbs.
