We've tried but they're too flipping ubiquitous, I think. And exceptionally quick at breeding. Like with anything, they serve their purpose in a specific niche but cause chaos if introduced outside that niche. |

"Yes. Nuke the bastards. With you on this one. "
Thanks for your support on this delicate matter.
I learn that they have lived among us for thousands of years and know how to survive. They come out when we go to sleep. It can't be that hard to get rid of the entire specie |

I usually leave out a bowl of bread and soup for them in my local rat hangout spot because they are intelligent creatures who like soup so why shouldn't we make sure they get to enjoy the little things in life? |

Mice and rats breed all year round, every 6 weeks. They are a bit of a pest, but they are equally very intelligent, and domestic ones can be trained to find bombs. But rats would return to the countryside if people didn’t leave mess or food discarded around. |

A farmer once told me that he put down oats mixed with plaster of Paris as bait for them, according to him, it goes hard in their stomachs, and shitting a brick is damn near impossible for any species. No doubt the RSPCA, or animal rights activists would have a field day if the got to know what he was doing, but he'd probably tell them that he couldn't give a Rats Arse! |

And then blast them with the air rifle when they're feeding. I use cat food but I like you soup idea. |

Yesterday OP started a thread saying his new year resolution is to try to be a better person. I suggest he starts by not suggesting we wipe out an entire species just because (in his view) they serve no real purpose. They serve no more or less of a purpose than most other animals so do you think we should get rid of every species that doesn’t serve an obvious purpose?
I’m no zoologist so I don’t know exactly what purpose they serve but I’m pretty sure they have their part to play somehow, they certainly don’t cause any harm to the planet in the way humans do so maybe the species that needs to be wiped off the planet is the one that’s killing it.

Your original comment was comparing mice with rats not humans, and you said mice are harmless and smart as well as clean so no, it wasn’t clear from your first comment that you’d choose mice over humans for being clean.
But thanks for being more specific and confirming that you think mice are cleaner than humans |

On the last CITB site managers course, and indeed first aid course I was on, the subject of Wields Disease, or Sleeping Sickness as it's also know as, came up for discussion. Apparently you contract it from ingesting very minute quantities of the urine from pregnant female rats. This suggests that the secret to survival in living with these creatures is, "Don't take the piss out of rats!" |

Professionally i have cleared rats for people with non-lethal traps...released them away from people.
Set the pro killers on them if the problem is bigger than i can handle.
At home by beautiful little cat will kill any mouse or rat that dares intrude the domestic bliss. with extreme prejudice x |

Well apparently mice clean themselves 3x a day most humans don't know how to use a bar of soap or understand hygiene... You brought humans into it I was just picking between a mouse and a rat |

Funny because when you think about it, human’s serve just as little a purpose to this planet’s natural existence. We are the biggest plague on the planet, hands down. |

So do mice know how to use a bar of soap and have a full understanding of hygiene? They clean themselves with their own tongues, if a human did that you’d say s/he was dirty.
You said you’d choose a mouse over a human so you were picking between mice and humans not mice and rats. That’s why I didn’t understand your point. |

Seriously? Mice spread the same diseases as rats do. But you’re happy to live with one & not the other? Mice aren’t that smart, not if my indoor cat can catch one & present it to me on my bed (like she did this morning) |

Mice spread diseases too. Look up Weil's disease and why you shouldn't drink from a drinks can that's been stored on a warehouse shelf for ages (always clean them and decant into a clean glass). Mices are just as disease-bearing as rats really |

It's mouse urine you want to watch out for. Hard to know if it's all over your food packaging..... Especially if dried. |

"Roland Rat is going to hunt your arse down… Ehhhhhh, rat fans!!!"
Not to mention Bob Geldof and Johnny Fingers! They still put on great live shows and made great tracks like Rat Trap and I Don't Like Mondays, so why get rid?
Seriously, I agree. Spread disease (Weils?) and serious pests. Getting rid is a no brainer? The 'living things' argument is absurd. Fancy living with head lice or crabs, scabies or tapeworms? All living things. The eco headbangers all say 'Ah that's different!' when you suggest they might like to live with such creatures! |

btw, like vultures, beetles, worms, crows et al rats clear up a lot of the shit we humans don't need laying around.
You don't need to be an 'eco headbanger' to understand eco-systems need cockroaches as well as fucken pandas.
do i want them in my house ? Hell no, but eradicating species because they give you the ikk is not necessarily a good move.
except mosquitoes, possibly those evil cunts need a pasting |

Although mosquitoes kill around 700,000 people per year, birds such as ducks, geese, and songbirds all eat mosquitoes as a large part of their diet. Fish like guppies and bass also eat them. Without mosquitoes, these animals may die out.
Bed bugs, lice and scabies don’t do any of these things. They don’t pollinate and since they eat nothing but blood, they don’t feed on other pests.
They never do anything but feed, digest, and produce eggs. Unlike other pests like mosquitoes, cockroaches and vermin, the ecosystem around us wouldn’t suffer if bed bugs were gone.

My neighbour used to feed the birds when he was alive, there were so many rat's around his property, sadly he passed away but no rat's since the feeding of the birds have stopped, think its about removing food sources then they should move on where they can find some more. |

why the want to get rid of them, are they a problem un your life?
they have thier part to play in the world, alot like wasps, alot of people hate them, but if we got rid of them who knows what would happen.
if you have a rat problem then be more carefull with waste food etc, they will only be where life is easy, so take away the food source and they will soon move |

I think we need to get rid of foxes too. They barely hunt. All they do is go through the neighbourhood rubbish even during daylight hours, take anything in the garden which isn't nailed down, piss everywhere and shit on our doorstep on a bi weekly basis. No deterrent works. |

Rats are a big part of the food chain owls and other predators rely a lot on such vermin being in the ecosystem for such a long time.. I,m not sure what effect it would have on birds like the barn owl etc If brown rats were no more I,m not a lover of house mouse but rats I hate, they will soon move into a environment If the conditions are right for them. |

We live on the edge of farmland and see the odd fox on the street but they never come near us. All you can do is make sure your fences and gates are in good order and maybe add a screen door if you want the door open for ventilation? Ultimately, we have seriously invaded the natural world and concreted over it. Then, we leave tons of high calorie foods lying about for them to eat! |

We have waist height fences. They roam the streets at night and I've seen them play in next door's front garden, dragging random litter in to play which often blows towards our garden. Sometimes with a turd too.
But where I lived previously there were fences six feet high outside my flat. They often went underneath but I've also spotted them sunbathing on top of garages before so they must have jumped those fences too.
We've taken all the advice, to keep the garden tidy, have no sources of food to attract them... They just take no notice. They dig up flowers and plants and tip over plant pots seemingly on purpose, shit and piss on our property... Everything they can think of to piss us off basically. I might have to buy a wolf. |

Yeah but wherever I move to... There are foxes! A couple of months ago I had a meet with a Tinder date. Guess what happened. A fox came inside the bedroom which backs onto the garden. I was stood inside no less than a few feet away and it took my shoe!
Think u exaggerate! Live and let live rats lifes matter 2!! X"
No exaggeration, it's not rats I loathe, it's foxes. Although if I saw those huge sewer rats I'd probably move home. My mum saw a horde of them at her work once. I'd find a new line of work. |

"Maybe if people kept the rubbish where it's supposed to be it wouldn't bring them further into human environment
Where would they go for food then? KFC?? "
Aldi but seriously remain in farmland or besides water same as seagulls have come further in land due to humans feeding or throwing away unwanted food on the floor |

As with many 'pest' creatures rats and other rodents have two jobs they are prey for others and they eat what we discard, they survive by being omnivorous. Their relationship with humans is historically beneficial to the species. We, as a species enable their proliferation, it's not the rats fault they are intelligent, sociable and adaptable. All things we admire in our own species, in fact as mammals they are our cousin's and our own evolutionary journey took us through a similar species.
As the great Jeff Goldblum said life finds a way. Good on rats for doing it their own way so well. They also make excellent pets, and although I'd rather not have a sewer rat climbing through my u-bend, it's not a slight on me that he chooses to do so. |

The best way is by culling them, i have cleared a few stables over a period of time, no cost to the owner, i come with a thermal scope and eradicate quietly efficiently and humanely, northwest area only |

Currently lodging in a house where they had a small galley extention. Which was turned into a utility room, with a large step/platform.
Just after xmas, one of the two dogs was seriously ill, but recovered. Then two weeks later, the other dog died. Both had severe kidney issues.
About a week later, a sealed 15kg dog food bag on top of a freezer had holes cut in by rats/mice. Then, a week later, water started leaking into the extension.
Replaced the washing machine. It's still the same issue. Finally, she found out, the rats had been living under the sealed step from the extension to the kitchen. It turns out they had chewed through the plastic water vent pipe, and had flooded themselves out. (The hole that they needed to access to get in under the step was seriously small.)
So can agree, rats are bastardos. |

One of my low moments working abroad was waking up to a rat defecating on top of my mosquito net.
That being said they are really not to blame for much of the vitriol against them. They are causing havoc in the Galapagos as the endemic species there have no defence against them nicking their eggs ect. But, y'know it was humans that took them there.... |

Rats are really useful for cleaning up the place. Without them, the countryside would be littered with dead animals and their rotting carcases.
But because lots of people are basically dirty fuckers, rats get to feast on all the food that people throw into the streets.

I think humans are actually the only creatures that don't serve a purpose in the echo system.
I think rats actually clear up our waste and rubbish that we don't dispose of properly.
Plus they are somethings food source.

"Humans are very capable of getting rid of others species so why can't we get rid of rats? It's not like they serve any purpose?
Sorry in advance if this has upset anyone "
because they are like tribbles. |

Yes because rats are notorious for causing war, holocausts, genocides, global warming, famine etc
Oh wait, that would be humans but rats should be wiped out because they don't serve a purpose

Hang on - I thought the rats developed a couple of organic robots on their home planet a few million years ago, set them down on Earth to multiply, and then came here once they (we) had made the place really brilliant for rats?
So, we do all the work, they get all the fun.
Plus, they put the failsafe in.
Which is, we'll destroy ourselves through global Armageddon two weeks before we work out how to kill all the rats.
That was the really clever bit . |
