Amazing moments in sport
Jump to: Newest in thread
The wonder of sport is that in moments, anything can happen.. From the underdog winning.. Like James buster Douglas putting iron Mike tyson on his backside... To cheating.. Like Ben Johnson breaking the 100m record to win Olympic gold all hopped up on scoobie snacks... To close finishes like steve Redgrave and the gb team winning a 2km race by millimetres... To emotional moments like Derek redmonds leg giving out in the olympic 400m final only for his dad to carry him over the line... And to the officials making a horlicks of it like last weekends f1 gp where max beat Lewis courtesy of some involvement of the officials..
So... What stands out for you? What moments did you witness and think... My god I can't believe I've just seen that... |

"The ‘Ben Stokes’ Ashes test match innings.
Followed by his world cup winning innings! Summer of stokes...
We need him to repeat that... And more tomorrow! "
That I’d love to see. The reality is I’d be amazed if Australia don’t bowl England out twice without needing to bat again. |

I'm an old git, but I remember back in the day's, Jimmy (jinksy)Johnston (Celtic player) taking the ball off his keeper, then took it up to the penalty area of the other side,.and then brought it back to his keeper..football was entertaining then. |

Christian Eriksen collapsing at the euros..
And in a similar theme Michael Watson being knocked out by Chris eubank... I watched it live as he started his episode... Even more incredible that he completed the london marathon. What an inspiring man. |

The Final.
Steve Davies against Dennis Taylor in 1985. It was the first time sport (don’t want arguments if snooker or darts are really sports) actually gripped me. Spoiler alert, that it went to the last ball of the final frame was magical.
There’s others from Motorcycle racing especially with Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz or Carl Fogarty to boxing Benn v McClelland that had me on the edge of my seat.
But it’s the snooker that started it |

Had to think hard about this one as I have watched many great spine tingling sporting moments and some ended in disappointment, but I will have to go for Andy Murray winning Wimbledon I was so nervous when he was close to winning pacing about leaving the room and watching with one eye etc. Absolutely fantastic and things like that is why so many love sport |

Manchester Utd winning the champions league with 2 goals in injury time does stand out as does Sergio augero scoring for Manchester City to win the PL, sometimes it’s the commentary that helps big occasions stand out |

Russell Brookes winning the 1976 Scottish after rolling on the second stage.
Car looked a mess with no back or side windows but he drove like a demon, nobody could match him.
As the Finns fell by the wayside trying to real him in, he went on to take his first international victory. |

Rangers winning the league in 1987 after a nine year drought.
The team local to me (Motherwell) winning an amazing Scottish Cup Final in 1991 was great.
Dennis Taylor beating Steve Davis on the black ball at the Crucible World Snooker final in 1985.
And the BDO darts final in the early 2000s between Wolfie Adams and Phil Nixon, who came back from 6-0 down to draw 6-6, then lose in the deciding set. Not brilliant darts but great drama. |

Tony Yeboah's goal against Liverpool still ranked as one of the best premier league goals ever but I think the one he scored against Wimbledon a games later was even better! God Leeds need a player like him again right now ! |

It'll only apply to fellow Sunderland supporters but when Di Canio was appointed the last thing we expected was to hammer the mags 3-0 away, everything about the game was perfect and the start of our 6-game winning streak against them. |

Being season ticket holder at Everton for 30 years it’s sad that probably the most emotional I’ve ever got was when Barry Horne scored a wonder goal against Wimbledon in 1994 to keep us up x |

I was at Headingley in ‘81 for the last day - although was probably too young to fully appreciate the drama of it all. In 2005 I was at the last days of the Trent Bridge and The Oval Ashes tests and definitely appreciated them |

I bet 1981 was unreal, I’d have loved to have seen Botham at his best. 2005 was different level, probably the greatest test series there has ever been. I was at Headingley in 2019 to see Stokes almost single-handedly win that test match against the Aussies. Some people say it’s boring but for me there’s nothing more dramatic than a hard fought test series…..chance would be a fine thing this winter |

Mo Farah at the London Olympics! Guy's a legend!
Also prob not as popular here as it's basketball but when the Mavs beat heat to become champions.
I would have liked to be old enough to have watched Ali vs forman. Got to be one of the biggest upsets of all time....
So many to name |

You make a good point. The slow burn of test cricket. The 540 pauses each day between the action which happens in less than a second. The build of momentum and tension. Remember the 1998 contest between Mike Atherton and Allen Donald..? |

Scotland v England 2000...soaking wet day ..watching at my dad's
The draw at Twickenham,..previously the demolition job at Murrayfield the year previous.
Late 90s wsbk, troy Baylis drop his bike at same corner twice in a wet race and still recover to the podium.
Scotland v Australia 2015 World Cup.
Ireland v Australia 2011 World Cup ( ferris carrying genia back from a scrum for a huge turnover )

Brian Lara breaking the world record for the highest individual test innings against England hitting 400 not out.
Usain Bolt breaking the 100m amd 200m world records at the Beijing Olympics.
Roger Federer defeating Rafael Nadal in the 2017 Australian Open final.
Italy defeating Germany in the semi finals of the 2006 World Cup.
Italy defeating England in the finals of the Euros this year.
Michael Jordan hitting the game winner in Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals.
Oh and Brian Lara hitting a game winning 153 not out against Australia in Bridgtown Barbados in the 3rd test in 1999.
And last but not least Trinidad and Tobago taking gold in the men's 4×400m relay World Championships in 2017.
I think those are the ones that stood out to me the most.

"Erika Roe's huge bouncing rugby ball boobs, loved em.
The 66 and 70 World Cup Finals spectacular.
Yeah I remember Erica roe. Impressive pair, and very kind of her to share them with us "
Remember that too, and the comment from Peter Wheeler (I think it was) to Bill Beaumont....."hey Bill, there's a bloke over there with your ar*e on his chest" |

There are 2 for me… Both Liverpool FC European games related.
2005 Champions League final against AC Milan, 3-0 down at half time and looked well beaten , going on to draw 3-3 and eventually win on penalties. It was a performance I thought would never be beaten…
Until May 2019.. Champions League Semi final… 3-0 down to Barcelona from the first leg, They’ve got Messi et al, we’ve got Mane and Salah out injured…
Corner taken quickly… ORIGI!!!
4-0 Liverpool, 4-3 winners on aggregate, on to the Final against Spurs… |

How can we ever forget this.

Carlos Sainz Sr loosing the 1998 world rally championship by 700 meters as his Toyota Corolla broke down. Tommi Makinen had retired during the rally so all Sainz had to do was finish with 3 or more points in order to be crowned that years Champion. Carlos was so angry he smashed his helmet through the back window of the car which was caught on camera. |

2005 European Cup Final I couldn’t afford to go watched it with some friends in Liverpool at half time I listened to Andy Townsend when he said all over by half time 3-0 down by the time I got home it was 3-2 incredible final |

Brett Lee collapsing after failing to hold Flintoff off and get the two runs needed in the ashes 2005. The moment AF (and before him SH) knelt next to Lee was inspired sportsmanship. Lees almost 2hrs at the crease may have gone unrewarded but not un-respected. That was a test game I was happy to be part of that crowd in the midlands |

Probably euro final 2020.. I was stroking two cocks whilst we all caught the first half. Don't say I don't spoil guys! A handjob, football and a cuppa.
Otherwise sports isn't for me. |

Not that any of you would have seen it but, playing football in the vets about 20 years ago, a mate managed to miss the goal from 2 feet out, put it over the bar. That was pretty amazing! |

Brings new meaning to "getting pulled off at half time"
