I've always wondered why the amount of light reflected by the moon would have an effect on people. The moon is still all there at New Moon (when it has a similar tidal influence) its the same distance away from us, the same side is always facing us, the only thing that varies is the shadow.

All orbits are elliptical. The moon is no different.
The Moon revolves around Earth in an elliptical orbit with a mean eccentricity of 0.0549. Thus, the Moon's center-to-center distance from Earth varies with mean values of 363,396 km at perigee to 405,504 km at apogee. The lunar orbital period with respect to the stars (sidereal month) is 27.32166 days (27d 07h 43m 12s).

"It's not just to do with the light though, is it...I mean, it's a monthly cycle, like a woman's menstrual cycle..it's curious why that is..."
Periods are driven by hormones. Hormones can be affected by light. The Circadian rythms and sleep cycles are altered in the summer and winter.
Depression gets worse in winter, SAD can be made better with daylight bulbs of a high enough wattage. so it's no surprize that science and myth have ineterwined the two patterns of the month.
I suppose the jury is still out. on this one. |

Thanks Bing and Nasa for that one.
it's a proven facrt that two metronomes will send mini vibrations along the samer table top and finally synchronise with each other. Just like two people breathing and sleeping, sometimes do. |
