Nigella is my fave, I did proper fan-girl when I met her a few years back, everything she cooks looks amazing.
Least fave, toss up between Mary Berry and Ainsley Harriet
Aware it’s sacrilege saying that about Mary and it’s nothing to do with my failed attempts to get on bake off, I loved her in that but her own programmes have me switching off. |

I would live Rick Stein to do my starter - famous for his seafood and I love fish,
James Martin for my main - his roasts and yorkshires are amazing and
Nigella for my desert - her puds are legendary and finger licking good
My least favourite would probably be Gordon as I wouldn't dare complain if I didn't like anything |

raymond blanc, a very good friend of mine and a pleasure to cook with.
I cant understand why jamie oliver is on that list of he even gets air time, his resturants are utter shit, his recipes aare crap and as for his chef's skills he has none hes a absolute fraud. |

Michel roux jr is the only one I would class a real chef out of that list to be honest. Most are glorified cooks. But nether less I love michel roux jr and his dad.

What is the Monica suggestion driven by? Seeing her on the telly? What has she done in terms of cooking compared to someone like Clare Smith, for example? |

Ramsay had 3 Michelin stars in his 20’s. Not everybody’s cup of tea, but an outstanding chef. And he has developed tons of other excellent chefs.
Roux jnr is very good, but the waterside inn is unimaginative, turning the handle on a well-worn routine. It’s beautiful, I love it and go there several times a year, but I see no basis for heralding roux Jnr as world class out of that list.
200 yards away, however, Heston is. I prefer the waterside inn as an overall experience, but heston’s food is far better. |

Ramsay? Nah, he’s a pussycat in real life. Have met him many times, been in several of his kitchens, and the food news is that you wouldn’t need to complain about anything.
He has a great sense of humour and huge energy for talking about food and restaurants ... spent hours talking to him once and the entire time it was him pumping me for information and thoughts in restaurants I had been to. |

She is a great chef, I have met her a few times and she has cooked for me. But I would choose Clare smith ahead of her, having left the equivalent position at Ramsay’s main restaurant and earned her own stars.
Unless I’ve missed it, I’m not seeing many em ruins of Marcus wareing, and that didn’t surprise me. I went to Marcus and it was ok, but nothing special.
Most disappointing experience was the Hand and Flowers though, (kerridge), really poor from start to finish and absolutely no idea how it got 2 stars. |

There’s tons of gems out there that are way better than most on the list, but much fewer people will know them because they are not on tv.
For example, in padstow, the best known chef would clearly be Rick stein, but Paul ainsworth is much higher standard. |

.. if only it was easier to get a table at ainsworth’s! It’s not even easy to get a table at his pub in Rock. When I was there last summer, Ramsay turned up for dinner at the Mariner’s (the pub in Rock), with the beckhams. Ainsworth had worked for Ramsay for several years. |

Sorry you feel that I was trying to invalidate your choices. I wasn’t. I have met roux many times, have been to his restaurant dozens of times and met him many times. He is an excellent chef and I love his restaurant.
But it was you who said that he was the only world class chef on the list, thereby invalidating other people’s choices!
For me, roux has the better restaurant and Heston has the better food. |

If you had simply said the roux was your favourite, I’d say great, and he would be one of my tops on that list too.
But you didn’t. You said that most of the list were glorified cooks and that roux is the only one that is world class, hence my comment about Heston.
Any trips planned to the waterside inn? I have 2 in the diary. Usually go once a quarter. |

Jimmy, if I can call you that, you seem to like your food and various places to indulge. Have you come across some of the northern yorkshire chefs and their food like Tommy Banks, Shaun Rankin or Michael Wignall? I was planning a visit at the Black Swan at Oldstead for a friend's birthday but not sure. It is hard to get in forva start but also in my opinion a little overpriced for what you get although people seen to rave about it and Tommy Banks. |

I was planning a visit at the Black Swan at Oldstead for a friend's birthday but not sure. Mainly London and the south for me, but I did come across wignall when he was at gidleigh park. Great food, but the restaurant felt dead, felt like a library, everyone whispering. Fantastic tasting menu and veggie testing menu.
He had taken over from Michael caines who had been there for years. Caines’ new place near Exeter is very good.
Further north, I love restaurant Andrew fairlie at gleneagles. Sad that he died young, nice that the restaurant still bears his name.
The black swan sounds great. And I definitely want to visit L’enclume!

I worked for Rick Stein in Winchester. Nice enough but I’d say his food is often smoke and mirrors.
Met Marco Pierre White and he seemed a decent enough bloke.
But to cook for me?
I don’t like him but he has standards - Gordon Ramsay.
I’d love to be at a dinner party with the glamorous Nigella.
Also The Hairy Bikers could rustle up a good meal as could as could James or Hugh.
Ken Holm I’d choose too.

The Marlow one would be amazing but the waiting list is huge. He also has a restaurant in the Corinthian hotel in London which is apparently superb. |

I still have the fat duck on my bucket list.
I'm lucky that I have Lisa Goodwin-Allen (Northcote) and Tom Parker (White Swan at Fence) on my doorstep... With Michael Wignall (Angel at Hetton) and Simon Rogan (Rogan & Co and L'Enclume) not too far away.
For a girl who has a stomach the size of a toddler I spend way too much money eating out |

And I have been to some of them you mentioned oncevor twice and a few times at the Angel. To be fair as you say there is a cluster of nice restaurants in that area so no wonder you are tempted to part with your money |

I have been to the Hand and Flowers a few times and have absolutely no idea how it a anger thing get 2 stars. Over-priced (90 quid for a steak!) and pretty forgettable.
Heston is in a different league. I have been to the Fat Duck 3 times and the food is just outstanding. I was worried that the showy side of things (liquid nitrogen , smoke etc) might be at the expense of the quality of the food, but it isn’t. |

I have been to the Hand and Flowers in Marlow several times and can’t see how it managed to get 2 stars.
The food was nothing special, some dishes were disastrously overpriced (90 quid for a steak!), the service was patchy, and the wine service was atrocious … nobody knew one end of the wine list from the other.
I have had better food and much better service in several other local restaurants
The overall sense I picked up was complacency |

That was my concern too before I gave the Fat Duck a try. Thought it would be “tried it” / 1-off, but please let me now go to a normal restaurant. But the food was exceptional and not at all weird |
