Could you live without TV
Jump to: Newest in thread
I don't know. It has its uses and moments...
I enjoy recording topics of interest including concerts from sky arts.
Concerts I would never have seen in my lifetime.
TV has alot. I mean Alot of tripe on it. But movies and music save the box... ![](/icons/s/2/cute.gif) |

I've only recently started turning my television on.
That was originally to watch Christmas films, but, as I flicked, I came across quiz shows and watched some of them.
This evening I stopped on an episode of DIY SOS, which had me in tears.
I could easily live without television or music, but sometimes it adds a little joy to my life.

No. I’m a massive NUFC and boxing fan and it’s not possible to go to games and fights all the time so need a TV. Plus we love watching a good Netflix series together |

"If you still had music
For me I could Vidio kild the radio but will TV kill Music "
Went on holiday in May…. Came home, still haven’t watched the Casualty episodes that have been getting recorded since May, poor TV is there for show now, occasionally gets turned on so I can watch a DVD, or Netflix, other than that this person who used to be glued to the TV rarely watches it now. Having said that, I do watch apps on my iPad, does that count? |

It would be facing each other... As if you have to talk to people
That’s a horrifying thought "
It's a story old people used to scare little kids I think ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

Netflix, Disney+, and the internet are what we use. Never bother with live broadcasts and hubby has never paid for a TV licence in his life. Every 4 years or so we may get a letter asking if anything has changed but we just go online and tell them no TV license required thank you. |

I mainly watch sport on the TV but I’m a big music fan so it’s rare that I don’t have music on in the house and I never leave the house without my headphones |

TV is doing just fine at killing itself.
The moment they launched "reality" TV was the start of the nails going into the coffin.
Love the ad where they drop a skip on two of the so called RTV celebs, just a shame it's not real.
Do yes could survive without it. |

I often work overseas for up to a month at a time (Well, pre covid I did!)and I don't miss telly at all then.
A guilty pleasure of mine was that I used to watch Coronation Street, but after one extended trip, I decided that rather than catch up with the story, I would simply never ever watch it again and I haven't. I don't miss it and probably spend the saved time reading or mooching about on here!
That said, there are some great TV programmes on and I have no hesitation in watching them if I'm at home.
So to answer the original question.
Could I? Yes.
Will I? No.

I had no TV for about four years. The only reason that changed was that I got married and my wife wanted one. The only reason I have one now is because Hannah wants one. I don't watch it on my own much. If I was on my own I wouldn't have one. I have much more interesting things to do. Luke |

I watch telly for the sport and I suppose the actual telly and my satellite subscriptions reflect that. I watch good quality drama and arts programs with documentaries sprinkled in that mix.
As for the rest of the diatribe such as Strictly, I’m a celebrity, naked attraction and other such nonsense they should be assigned to the Mogadon for The Masses station and restricted to 2 hours viewing per day. |

No but only because I'm a huge sports fan you can't watch everything online on a laptop.
Otherwise probably as I rarely watch it now use Netflix etc to watch things that interest me. |

I've had longer periods of my life without TV than with. Currently been without for about 15 years.
I have no idea what any celebs look like. Likewise most politicians. Do I care? No.
Television demands attention which I am not prepared to to give it. Some people have it on all the time whether they are watching or not.Often the audio from it is competing with radio or home supplied music at equal volume. I don't stick around with dates who live that existence.
Recently, I gave up seeing someone with a massive bedroom telly playing a Latin American soap series in the original lingo which was discord to my ears and very probably unintelligible to hers. However, the last straw was that while we were on the job she had to look at the screen all the time to read the atrocious sub titles.
Riveting stuff but ,hey, It was switched on so needed watching.
I have always believed that the great viewing public would watch woodlouse racing from Crawley if any TV company were to introduce it. |

I do live without one. And have done for the past 17 years. The BBC goons have been inside my house and seen that I do not have a t.v. But they still send threatening letters to me to get a license. ![](/icons/s/rolleyes.gif) |

I readdress the letters back to them, marked 'Unsolicited material'. However, I suspect they go no further back than a bin in the local sorting office. I must ask my postie whether such an arrangement exists.
If they were to give me a free phone number to call, I would be happy to discuss the matter with them at some considerable length. Meanwhile if they want to waste their money (which comes from all the mugs out there) on postage, that is up to them. |

I am sure most people could but might take a little longer gir some to adjust than others. In any case most people's phone can be a multimedia device delivering any content you want. All in moderation is my moto and often prefer listening to music than watching TV anyway. Certainly not a big fan of news, again my moto is, if its anything of huge importance will surely hear about it somehow. I rather watch the hairy bikers or Merry Berry baking a chocolate torte. ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

When I was able to work longer jobs overseas I was living in South Wales. I know live in Southern Spain but have a long list of family and friends who will house sit when international travel fully returns.
Where you offering to house sit or planning on a burglary?

"If you still had music

Do you mean without a TV or TV channels?
Most of the music we consume is via youtube, amazon or Spotify through a TV |

The law says you need to be covered by a TV Licence to:
1. watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV, on any channel
2. watch or stream programmes live on an online TV service (such as ITV Hub, All 4, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Now TV, Sky Go, etc.)
download or watch any BBC programmes on BBC iPlayer.
This applies to any device you use, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console, digital box or DVD/VHS recorder.
I have a visit from the salesmen that work for the BBC licence roughly every 2 years, I simply say 'No thank you' then close the door. So apart from the letter that go straight in the bin, that's it.
There is a guy called Chilljoncarne on youtube that makes videos on this subject that you might find useful. |
