Do you see Christmas as being about Jesus, or Santa or both?

When I was growing up it was all about the birth of Jesus and the nativity. It seems these days it’s all about Santa / Father Christmas.
What do you associate Christmas with more? The religious side or the commercial side or can you have a happy medium between them both? |

"I was brought up in a Christian home, so it was about the birth of Jesus. Now, I'm not fussed about it at all."
Yeah it’s rare to see any reference to to the nativity in the run up these days. It’s strange! |

I don't like how Christmas has become so commercialised and materialistic, that families are put under pressure to blow the budget to the point of taking out expensive pay day loans to cover it all.
I'd rather keep it about Jesus and use it as a time of year to consider those less fortunate or in need. |

"A well earned end of year break, to be honest
Exactly this. It’s nothing more than time off work to me. So merry Christmas one and all!!"
This for me too. Why couldn’t Christmas be in the middle of summer |

Well jesus didnt have a choice he made no list, he got what he was given, gold frankincense & myr... and he was happy.
Now days everyone makes a list.. then santa emptys his sack underneath your tree with the contents of the list, so id say iTs about santa claus nowadays.

Thank you everyone!! Yes it is a chance for a nice break for many of us, and a chance to gorge out on food etc! I think we all deserve it after the year we’ve had.
And love and hugs to those not so fortunate to be able to enjoy the festive season for whatever reason this year |

Agreed! My mother doesn't understand why I'm so over it. It's just another day to me x |

I must admit that until two years ago when pandemic hit, for me Santa's sleigh was a TUI jet heading for one or other of the Canary islands, pina colada at a pool side with waiters running round in Santa hats, and a tan top up into the bargain, not to mention gala dinner, was what made a year of graft all worthwhile.
Those days will hopefully return though. |

It's neither for (although I'm guilty of getting a bit caught up in the commercial side of it). It's really just a designated point in the year where everything pauses and people are nicer to each other and can spend time together. |

I was brought up a Christian so seen it more of about the north of Jesus…. Then when I had kids it was all about family and enjoying it …. But now it’s an excuse to drink and eat far too much and I’m a bit of a humph grumpy as I moan about how much it costs me xxxxx |

Santa. It's more plausible than Jesus so I'm going with that. We see santa on commercials, visiting children on streets, in shopping centres. Noone brings out jesus when we need a little cheering up. Jesus certainly doesn't turn up when you've ran out of wine! |

I love the commercialisation of it, that it's been snatched from the clutches of organised religious control freaks. People took it and made it their own.
Beautiful freedom. Authoritarian institutions hate that |

I was raised Christian, but I don't believe Jesus was born on 25th December. It's more about family for me now as I'm older. And dinner, I like Christmas dinner |

The Christmas food and time off work. As well as twinkly lights.
Mostly seeing people that little bit happier.
I love all the build up to Christmas, I don't really love the day itself. |

I see it as neither. I can only see it as a time when bad shit has happened to me or my friends, and a time I’d rather just let slip by without a song n dance.
For the record, I’m not a grinch, and I’m happy for those who love this time of year. I won’t be miserable among people if I’m invited to visit. It’s just a big old kerfuffle for me. |

"I don't believe Jesus was the son of God or did anything particularly good. Christmas is more about the Father Christmas side for me. Luke "
If God was the father of Jesus, that means he made another mans wife pregnant.

These days its only about my children. When they get older then possibly grandchildren. Outside of that I see it as 2 weeks off work to relax and enjoy the general feel good atmosphere |

"It's a pagan festival for a start lol
E "
Funny you should mention that it's a pagan festival, which I dare say is open to debate, but I did read an article about pagan festivals, including Christmas being celebrated around mid winter. The reason given was that we homosapians are basically animals, albeit the most ad animals on the planet, and human male of our species is at his most potent, and sexually active around mid winter day. It's effectively the height of the mating season for us lot, hence the rituals and festivals round about now. You however may know more on this subject than I do. |

It's all about be politically correct now you can't mention anything to do with religion like the nativity or Christmas, It has to be happy holidays but I'm afraid it will always be happy Christmas from me.
Happy Christmas to all |

No family here & no children so for me, now, it's the literal meaning of the days getting longer.
I absolutely hate winters and Christmas means that winter is slooowwwly fu cking off, days will be longer - spring is around the corner. |

Morden Christmas is probably more to do with selling stuff to people. It's a pagan festival and American thanks giving crossed together. But whatever it's become at least it's a few more days spend catching up with your family. |

It's about spending time with family and exchanging gifts.
Father Christmas (Santa is American) was very much part of it when the children were small.
Not religious in any way. It's a hijacked pagan festival anyway

For me it's all about a relaxing 2 weeks around Christmas as I always keep a few days holidays back to take at Christmas and therefore lengthen tbe break.
I hate the commercialism, my friends and I don't exchange presents by mutual agreement. There's something mad about shopping for what you think someone might like. |

Santa was Jesus brother.. After jesus was killed on the cross and he became a zombie him and santa got the idea of giving gifts to all the none Jewish boys and girls that hadn't wanted him dead.. This was the start of the good/naughty list... |

It will always mean something different to everyone but should definitely be about love and kindness, not about gluttony or getting into debt to buy ever more extravagant presents or expect to be given such presents. In my very humble opinion, anyway. |

I was raised as a Catholic. Now it’s about spending time with family but when my kids were smaller it was all about Santa & the fun stuff that went with it with a tiny bit of religion thrown in such as the church service where we sang carols & took a present for the children in the local Women’s Aid refuge.

We lost the true meaning of Christmas a long time ago …..
It’s a commercially successful attempt to bankrupt general public with over priced good and services.
Your family should mean as much to you EVERY DAY of the year as they do at Christmas. |

Santa
Never really believed in Jesus or anything religious when I was a kid, only reason why I read some of the bible when I was 10 because I wanted to see if there was anything about the devil ffs...I was a weird kid... got about 12 verses in and got bored
My immediate family isn’t really religious anyway |

Its a pretty poor debate when the Pagans had a winter solstice celebrating the coming of longer days- or the 'birth of the sun', and also celebrated the spring equinox- the time of 'rebirth' (Hmmmm, lets rebrand it as Easter?)- then this other lot turned up and conveniently had a story fitted in with both (just wiggle some dates round a little to suit). All you had to do was do as we say and give us some of your money/crops/livestock so we don't have to graft for it |

I thought that "Santa Claus" was a corruption of "Saint Nicolas". It appears to have started from Sinter Klaas, a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas (Dutch for Saint Nicholas).

The nativity features high in my life, partly because I'm a Christian (i have no idea how i am a Christian swinger ) but also one of my grandchildren goes to a village church school, throughout the year they have various Christian events, the certificates the children get always have a quote from the bible and this week they have a nativity concert on |
