This was levelled at the Leeds United team of the early to mid 70’s. There were other ‘hard men’ players in that era - the gentlemanly Ron (Chopper) Harris of my beloved Chelsea. The Liverpool midfielder - Tommy? What was his surname?
However, this was almost fifty years ago. There have been a few tough players since, Roy Keane being one but generally has the game ‘softened’? Better for it? |

Recently saw a clip of Man Utd v Wimbledon
Vinny Jones targeted and really knocked the shit out of Keane clattering him over
Keano got up and carried on, clearly smart enough not to tackle vinny |

Personally, no I don't think it has made the game better, there's far too much time wasted with players rolling around on the floor like they have a limb hanging off just because someone pulled their shirt
I'm not talking about deliberately injuring anyone, but players like Julian Dicks and Vinny Jones were always entertaining to watch (the reactions of players suddenly faced with them at full steam were often even more entertaining). |

I think it's better for it. The football is generally better to watch and more free flowing. Yes, there is diving which needs to be cut out but I'll take that over players potentially getting really injured, especially when they have so many games to play already. |

I was a massive Man Utd fan up until to the mid 2000s. Ronaldo, Van Nistelrooy all that lot that just dived and rolled around game after game. And it just got on my tits that much I gave up on it. I don't recognise football anymore, maybe it's an age thing . Julian Dicks, Ruddock, Keane, Duncan Ferguson, just player's that liked getting stuck in. Football is like everything else now days its to PC. Stick Jaap Stam in a match now and he be sent off in ten minutes for something that I would consider a decent tackle. |
