Do you spoil your kids at Christmas?

Back when I was a kiddie, I was lucky to get about 4 or 5 presents at Christmas. That was it. A main present and a few stocking fillers really. Probably with inflation etc the sum total from everybody who gifted (parents / relatives etc) would be probably around the £50 mark at todays prices, I grew up in a single parent family and was massively excited by what I got, and I know (now!) that my Mum would have been stretched financially to provide what we got.
I have to say, these days when the family gathers at the festive period, it seems every child is now inundated with presents. Big fuckers too. Like hundreds of pounds.
I remember a couple of years ago just watching as my nephews and nieces opened their piles of presents, hardly taking time to register what they had received before putting it on the pile and then opening the next.
Of course it’s the time to spoil the kids and treat them as well as you can. Maybe make sure they get the things you didn’t as a kiddie.
So do you use this time of year to shower gifts on your offspring, as a mark of your love for them, or are you more prudent?
Do you overstretch yourself at this time of year financially to make sure they get the best gifts and have a magical Christmas?
And is there an element of having to keep up with the Jones?

Our family was always stretched at Christmas when I was growing up. I remember my mum working hard to make it special with traditions as much as the things under the tree.
Im a single mum and the boy has no contact from his dad's side. I feel pressure to make sure he has a nice bundle but aware it is pretty much just me.
He is older and understands but I still try to make it special and let him have the things he would like if possible.

The kids have had second hand babysitters (ipads) for a little while now but we've bought them brand new ones instead. They know not to fling them down the stairs anymore.
Other than that they've maybe got 5 other presents which are things they need - clothes!
I'd say excluding the ipads we've spent about £30 each on them.. They get treated throughout the year and we have a big family/extended family so they get spoilt by grandparents and aunties/uncles.
At the moment they're enjoying experiences more so that's what we're trying to do with them instead of materialistic things.
They are very appreciative kids and would be happy with a box of fruit  |

Furunate enough to have been indulged with no shortage as a child, different o mrs who came from a different background. But do wonder if we spoil children those days. It is easy to splash the cash and give them a lot, but do they really appreciate how much work most people have to out in to afford an iPhone or Ps5?
It is a time not only to be generous, but to reflect as well.

I do spoil mine a little I’ve always just had the 1 whose now 18 so he’s been lucky as he’s had e everything I could afford to give him, sometimes that was less and sometimes more. Now having the baby I did tell him he wouldn’t be getting much but him and his gf have got joint gifts and I’ve ended up buying him more than I planned. He has always appreciated his gifts though and I’ve never gone completely over board. The baby wasn’t meant to have anything this year but we have bought quite a few things because he won’t be 1 until august so have bought things to get him through until his birthday |

Yes I did, however apart from Birthdays my boys did not get much throughout the year so Christmas was an opportunity to spoil them
My eldest birthday is a few days prior to Christmas and it used to drive me when people would buy him one present for both, no I insisted he had them separate or else he missed out.
And Christmas was not allowed to start until his Birthday had been and gone. |

Single mum of 4. I have a very generous family and they're amazing. But even when I had a partner and lots more money I've never been one for huge piles of expensive gifts. |

That was a joke, probably not a great one. I don't think I spoil loved ones, but do put thought and time into the gifts I get for others. |

We don’t tend to spoil our kids through the year with gifts so at Xmas and birthdays we tend to spend a fair bit. I always go over what to have budgeted for. To be fair it’s not so much then asking for things but me wanting to make sure that have enough surprises on the day on top of what they have asked for.
I think because I never used to get much as a child and used to feel disappointed, I tend to over indulge them a bit x |

Ah thanks all, interesting to read through!
I was out at in-laws today and was hearing how my nephew was going to to get a new iPhone 13 for Christmas. He’s 12. Heads gone.
I’ve only got an iPhone 6, and I feel lucky having that!! |
