What else could LOL stand for

It universally meant "Lots of love" when people wrote letters and especially when they started running out of space on postcards.
It was only when texting came along that it took on its current meaning.
Only yesterday evening, whilst strongly discouraging a trendy texty friend from ever including it in messages to me, I realised to my chagrin that I had broken my strict rule by including its use in my advisory message to her! |

I do know someone who thought it mean ‘lots of love’ and text it to someone to commiserate them on someone who had died. |

Ha,ha!
Now, there's a thought. How about using 'Haha'? maybe not if the number characters matter.
But wait, 100 years ago, telegraphers were using HI (note, two separate characters, not the same as 'Hi' as in hello) to signify laughter and it can still be found in use by Morse and keyboard operators today. |

"I always thought folk were sending me lots of love. Was a bit gutted when I found out they weren’t."
Ha ha fair enough… I did almost use “lol” then too! |

Well it sure as hell doesn’t mean ‘laugh out loud’! I loathe the phrase - and the vast majority of the time it’s used after a phrase or sentence that’s about as funny as syphilis! Has anyone out there EVER actually laughed out loud when someone’s sent a message with this inane acronym in it? "
No, only groaned inwardly!
Love the funny as syphilis metaphore, by the way (not abbreviated). |
