Anyone else here like travelling solo or have been forced to travel solo because no one else would join?
I started doing it after separating from my ex, about 3 years back and absolutely love the freedom it gives. I have done it often now. The only hard part is when you have to get back to your room, when you feel a bit lonely. But there are plenty of positives too.
Have you ever tried it? Will you do it again? |

Yeah, I travelled to Japan by myself and loved it. Was a mix of work and then once I finished I spent 10 days traveling solo.
Met some great people along the way, and had a German sausage too x x
I’ve been to other places by myself too but that’s my most memorable one x |

Yes! Solo travel was my passion when I didn’t have a mortgage!
I backpacked all of South, Central and North America and made some lifelong friends. Then I joined the ships and saw the rest of the world.
Stay in hostels if you don’t want to feel so lonely. |

Great question op.
Been away on my own before, camping trips and backpacking abroad are fine
Am curious what people tend to do in the evenings on mini city breaks. As you say OP it's the hotel in the evening part that can be bit lonely.Do you brave the bar on your own or stay in your room? |

I go out for dinner about 8 and have few drinks then. If I want company I have looked at who is near on fab and met a few lovely people. I even messaged someone if they would share a paella with me as restaurants tend to cook it for 2 people only. |

That's the hard part. I am a fussy sleeper. I cannot give up my 8 hours sleep and I need darkness and silence to fall asleep. I have tried hostels in the past once and it messed up my sleep.
When I go on day trips, I sometimes meet people with whom I have dinner with. We have dinner somewhere, chat for sometime and get back to our accomodation. But that doesn't happen often. |

"Yes I go on holiday alone and prefer it that way. Every minute of the day is mine to do what I want."
Exactly. I sometimes pack a day with three activities while completely chill out and take lazy walks around another day, all depending on my mood. |

I usually book group activities for daytime be it hiking, climbing, snowmobile etc. Sometimes, I have been lucky enough to meet fellow travellers who are friendly. After the activity, I check with them to see if they would like to have dinner together.
There could be also other solo travellers. Once I found another solo travellers in the same B&B I was staying in. We had different activities planned for daytime. But in the evening, we go out together and try different places to eat.
If nothing works, I go to restaurant myself as I don't drink. One thing I have learnt so far is to go to the room only when I am about to sleep. It's easier being outside alone than to be in room alone.
Staying in hostel is another idea that someone mentioned above though it doesn't work for me. |

Nice. Covid really messed up with my plans. Doing one this coming week and hoping that the new variant doesn't screw up my plans. |

I love it. I've travelled a lot with work so being alone in a hotel or restaurant doesnt bother me at all.
I love to travel alone so I can be as selfish as I like - get up when I feel like, only go and see the things I want to, do whatever I want to my own timetable. |

I’m literally saving up the funds for when I return from deployment and heading for Thailand as my first ever solo travel!!
I’m both excited and apprehensive all at the same time!!
If anyone has any pointers for solo travel then please send my way….think I’ll need it! |

I’ve been tonnes of places alone, including a year working and travelling in the states, 6 months in Ibiza, London for 2yrs - and many other holidays
I love the solitude, the discovering different cultures and meeting new people! The freedom to choose exactly what you wish to do is liberating xx |

I love traveling alone. I used to hitch hike to get about when I was young. I traveled to India for 6 months on my own. I got lost in Hungary and had many trips to interesting festivals. I've Travelled because of work and now I love a mountain/camping solo adventure.
I learnt alot about myself and gained a solid partnership with my intuition. There was no or little Internet when I first started adventuring so I became pretty resourced pretty quick.
It's not the same now. Everything is so mapped and easy. I'd love my kids to experience what I did as a young adult.. But of course they never will. |

I couldn't even imagine myself doing this without the help of internet. I have done some hikes in the Himalayas where I have gone for whole week without any kind of network. But we had guides with us who knew what they were doing. I would be totally lost without guides. |

Before internet you went to the library, borrowed a book of where you were going, jotted down where you wanted to go, then when arrived find the nearest tourist office for a map, leaflets on any places you have on your list, figure out how transport works. Then wing it |

And now we have websites where we can find partners for ONS wherever we go. Shows how much progress our civilization has made
But seriously, it takes lot of guts to travel to a country with completely different culture and language under those circumstances. |

But that is all part of the experience. The last thing I have out walking around is my phone or a map, big red flag. Memorise the base route and off you go, if get lost find a quiet spot and get your bearings. |

I've had a child in tow since I was 16 and so the majority of my travelling has been with family or Mr KC and I together. I've had one week in Spain on my own and a few work trips within the UK. I didn't even get to go over to NI for work on my own, another colleague came and we hung out together. I've never been much of an "on my own" person but seem to be warming to it more as I get older. I'd like to explore more with Mr KC though, more than on my own. |

It’s surprising how travel has changed with the Internet. I have a photo in a bar in Ko San road and in background the whole wall is covered in information , house shares, lifts offered and wanted, hostels to avoid, actual photos of places, hand drawn bus routes and maps. From this wall that night I planned a trip , I got a tuk tuk to Ekami station bought a bus ticket , and about 1hr before arriving in Chiangmai on the motorway , I told the driver to stop got out crossed the road found a path into the mountains, hitched a ride on a cart to a Lahu Village and stayed at the infamous Trekker Lodge for a month ! Met someone there who offered me a job teaching in English in Sumatra and ended up in Sumatra working for a local university ! |

I've only ever travelled with my family, so I'm a little nervous about it and getting lonely.
But I am planning my first solo trip next year. It's not that far, just to Scotland, but it's somewhere I've wanted to visit for a long time. |

Sometimes when it’s Newcastle I don’t even bother booking a hotel

I am lucky, I can travel space available on US military flight for free. It’s a real adventure and never really know where I might end up. I never plan anything and just go where the flights are going. I have literally traveled all over the world for free! It is amazing how people are so kind and generous! I stay over a few days, explore and catch next free flight I can get on.. |
