Inspired many a modern songwriter/musician/performer. Brought a whole niche of tourism to the city of Liverpool. Wrote some pretty catchy tunes.

They appealed to a broad range of people. They were talented but fairly down to Earth. They upset the establishment, religious bigots , racists, the klan. George even told the Hell’s Angels where to get off. Never dull and actually rebels dressed up by Brian Epstein. Even the Stones were in awe of them.

But each to their own.

I don't think they were particularly good musician's compared to what was around at the time.

They were a studio band for a good portion of their career that dosnt really do it for me.

Songwriting wise they are up there with the best.

The whole package dosnt do it for me. They come across fairly bland as individuals. Just my opinion.

Anything before Rubber Soul I tend to disregard straight off. I don't get that stuff at all.

Everything after album wise is very good in part's.

Can't think of one album that doesn't have a few stinkers on it.

The White album should of been a single album which they admitted themselves. There is a good ten songs on it that are questionable.

If you are going to be heralded as the greatest band ever you should have at least one flawless album, and I don't think they do.

Your choice. Not every great band will appease everybody. I have a tonne of albums and on most I’d skip tracks. Not so Rubber Soul, Revolver or Sgt Pepper. But in my opinion imperfection is interesting. Over produced music can be soul less.

They made music much more interesting. By taking influences from sources other than blues. From Medieval drones, western and Indian classical music. They brought in ideas that hadn't been used for 100s of years.

They were the English equivalent of Elvis, they changed the course of popular music and inspired other groups, musicians and writers for the next 30 odd years.

In essence the gave music its freedom.

The Beatles were in their big time a long time ago and they conqured the world with their music.

Much of their early stuff was recorded on 4/8 track tapes and overdubbed multiple times. They invented new recording techniques. They wrote the vast majority of their stuff themselves. They had no auto-tune, drum machines, multiple voice keyboards and computerised mixing desks to correct their mistakes.

At many of their concerts they could not hear themselves play for the screaming (no earpieces like today) so they moved into the studio where they could control things.

The variety of music they produced was astounding from simple pop, "I want to hold your hand", Rock "Back in the USSR", progresive "A day in the life" and simple ballads that became standards like "Michelle" and "Yesterday".

But they were of their time and their music is now "old". The music people enjoy is as varied as people themselves. Of that time some will like the Stones, some Led Zeppelin, Some Bob Dylan, some Barclay James Harvest (much beloved of John Peel).

The fact that Ed Sheran and Taylor Swift exist now does not diminish the Beatles as the Beatles did not diminish Vivaldi and Puchini. They were of their time too.

I'm in no way a big fan, but appreciate them. You don't have to like all their songs, but they really did change the world. It's like Covid - there will be before and after Covid; there really is a distinct before and after the Beatles, purely because they were so big in America and everyone else follows their culture. The Beatles wrote some fantastic songs - and gave away many of them to their contemporaries at the time as well. They also tried new things which was trail blazing. The effort that went in to the extended last note of "A day in the life" was mental. Nowadays it would just be a click of a button.

There will never be a band of that magnitude again. Don't get me wrong I prefer other bands to them but to have a catalogue like they have and in such a short space of time is mind blowing.

Zeppelin, Stones and The Who would be more my kind of music but you can't take anything away from the Beatles.

Like so many bands of the early 60s their popularity was the driving force behind the introduction of the pirate radio stations who broadcast from moored ships just outsite British territorial waters.

This in turn then pushed the BBC into launching Radio 1 in 1967 and the rest is history.

How many bands of today will still be talked about on 50 years? The Beatles called it a day before a dare say most members of this site/forum were even born!

We might not all like them, there may well be many bands with some better songs, but few if any will match the band for what they have achieved and how they have shaped modern pop music. And none will ever have as bug a nicker collection!

Unfortunately for The Beatles they had pretty much zero competition at that time. I find them booooorrrring but each to their own. Any band that has that much respect after 50 years is fine by me but they are not my cup of tea
