What skill could you take back in time?
Jump to: Newest in thread
If I had a time machine and could go back in time within the last 100 years... I would seek out the mothers of quite a few of our current politicians, and teach them how to give unrefusable blow jobs... |

"How to make ice cream"
That's not a bad one, assuming you go back just far enough so that we had discovered sugar. But how will you get it to freeze? Freezers won't have been invented and it's not that cold in this country |

Central Portugal |
I would take back the skills I have for making the best pizza in an oak fired oven - Thai curries and the solar technology that we have including the sun powered Tesla - sure we would be living in a cleaner planet today - but we are in Portugal and maybe wind power would be better in Brexit Britain! |

"I could teach ancient people to build and fly simple gliders. That would blow their heads up. Unless I got burned as a witch beforehand."
You'd have been ok in this country, we didn't burn them. Just drowned them. Oh, and they were all women, so you're good to go |

I'm not convinced they would draw the distinction! Maybe if I di it in a more evolved civilisation like Greece or Egypt? |

Bleak but accurate, but don't you think some other species would have evolved more and done much the same? |

Aye, we'd have been buggered, Frida! Add to that me being single, of a certain age & the owner of a black cat? I'll jump in the millpond myself |

Some good ideas but I think some people are a bit underestimating the difficulty of creating stuff from scratch!
I think I would struggle to teach any era a new skill or technology!
How to make metal like steel or aluminium...nope, no real idea.
How do you make gunpowder? Or glue? Or build a welder? Or make a drill?

No, there has been complex life on earth for over half a billion years, the age of the dinosaurs lasted far far longer than the world has existed since, and there is no evidence any came close. There is no evolutionary imperative to evolve high levels of intelligence and the specific set of circumstances that led to it in humans seems quite rare.
That's not to say I think it would never happen but aside from the genus homo there doesn't appear to be any other species that looks like it could/would take that path at present so it would still be a long way off without us.
As for the questing of whether they would be as bad? Yes, in all liklihood they would. The same evolutionary drive to survive and reproduce coupled with the ubiquitous drive to out-compete all others of your own and other species in order to do so would inevitably lead to a similar world to the one we have created. Everywhere any creature gains an upper hand in a given environment its wreaks destruction until the destruction reaches a level that it causes their population to plummet. Our intelligence has simply allowed us to extend this period indefinitely. All the worst parts of human nature exist in other animals, cruelty, the indifference to suffering in others, theft, murder, r@pe, bullying, politics, warfare etc etc so it seems likely that should any of them evolve as we have they would bring along a similar set of behaviours.

I could help with steel and if I was allowed to bring Wikipedia for reference probably a lot of other things. The tricky bit would be electricity - it requires so many other fields to be relatively advanced first in order to be useful.

If you took that skill back in time they'd of sacked off Thomas Telford for sure and replaced him with you and your wizardry. Though we wouldn't have any bridges |

Cool!
What do you make them out of?"
All natural materials, spruce, ash, or oak for wood, linen wing coverings. Really basic technology but they would still fly. |
