Just had a bowl of cereals with soya milk and omg , why does it taste SO GOOD!
I’ve cancelled cow milk for literally YEARS as it wasn’t really agreeing with me, and now even the smell of it makes my stomach go bleurgh.
Who drinks alternative milk? and What’s your fave?
For those who are STILL sceptical, what makes you not wanna switch sides?
I dabble between Soya and Oat (oat for coffees generally and soya for everything else)
I’ve recently tried Oat & Bali from NÖRD brand and it’s pretty good |

Remember years ago going to a club and taking soya milk for the Mrs. It always got used/taken by others so thought we'd be clever and label it as breast milk. Was that a bad idea or what.
Next visit to the fridge and it was cleared out! |

So. I’ve always struggled with heartburn and stuff forever. Only recently I thought about changing milk, so now I feel like a bit of a hipster twat buying oat milk (because soy is horrible and separates in my coffee) and do I feel better for it, yes. I do.
There’s something to be thought about when lol for cows comes from a cow, should we be consuming milk from another animal, wrong fats and nutritions?
But I will probably stay like this now I sound all cool asking for it in shops. |

We found oat and rice both seperate awful in coffee. Also own brand soya buy the Alpro Soya seems fine and much preferred over milk. |

I think it depends on which coffe rather than the milk. (Alkaline) but still, Soy milk isn’t a nice taste for me, I was also surprised that i prefer oat to Almond too. |

I used to like milk but it wasn’t agreeing with my tummy. Then I got on to alternative and it took some getting used to for a few weeks , taste wise..
So maybe u should slowly give the oat a try. Slowly |

Hate to say it, but that budget too
I’ll easily go through 6l of milk a week. Cost comparison, it’s just not worth it to try switching |

As vegans, we’ve been on alternative milks for ages. I (C) take tea and coffee black, but use alternative milks for cereals and cooking. V likes oat milk in hot drinks, but you need a blend that doesn’t split. |

Oatley is a great blend!! Usually that doesn’t blend
Also I find that using nespresso capsules don’t cause that splitting . Even with soya milk. Not sure why |

I belive its the different type of fats that do not emulsify well, Possiblly because the water may be too hot annd beecause it needs to be mixed sllowly bit by bit
Had issues with coconut milk when we used it as a replacement for dairy in Vegan prroducts for Starbucks when my job was designing new products for places like that

Depends on the vegan. Some still see it as exploiting an animal and stealing its resources. Those who a vegan for environmental reasons alone often are fine with honey as its much better for the environment too than many alternatives. |

I tried soya milk and really didn't like it. Almond mild takes a ridiculous amount of water to grow the almonds. On a QI we were watching last night, Alan Davies (a vegetarian) said that it takes a long time to milk an oat.
I would like to find an alternative to milk but haven't found the right one yet. Luke |

I only use the alternative milks in smoothies, usually almond or coconut, can't stand them to cook with or in tea, which does mean I have the following interaction at least once a week with clients.
"Would you like a tea or coffee"
"Tea would be lovely, thanks"
"Btw we only have X milk"
"Oh, black coffee then please"

I've tried a heap of alternative milks (I needed to buy vegan alternatives in a previous job so have tried most available products!). All have their place, but I do end up going back to cow's milk for my own use.
I prefer cow's milk for both taste and texture and it gives me no digestive issues.
If I had to use an alternative I don't mind oat milk for hot use in porridge or coffee and rice milk for cold use over cereal. |

I had to contact the vegan society to find out the official stance on almonds, because beehives are driven orchard to orchard during pollination - is that forced bee labour?
Official stance was that we could continue to label almond-containing products as vegan.
I got some very odd queries when I worked in the food industry! |

It's difficult because vegans are not a hive mind and have very varying opinions on some areas. I think the vegan society works based on what is "generally accepted" and other than that it comes down to sufficient labelling for people to make their own personal choices which should be available anyway for people with allergies. |

Seems a little pedantic
It’s just a way of saying “this is a vegan replacement for bacon”
Why call it something different, then have people asking what it is, then being explained “it’s the vegan version of bacon” then someone going “why don’t you just call it vegan bacon |

Also because they really emulate milk. Looks like it, kinda taste like it too . So
Some call them “oat drink or soy drink” but I mean that’s so generic !! |

Oh it wasn't just vegan queries and religious groups - I had to do spot audits checking for forced monkey labour in my coconut supply chain, cleanliness of water sources in vine fruits, food fraud and organised crime in the nut industry (bigger issue than you might imagine!).
At least with vegan status queries I could approach the vegan society for guidance, which was always useful in responding. They were always very helpful when I approached them! |

Some of us are fine with normal full fat cow's milk. If I have anything with oats (which are never highlighted in bold like wheat or barley) then I get IBS within 3-4 hours.
Going vegan IS bad for some people. Let us choose and not have it thrust upon us.
I love all the brown breads and even bran flakes and currants. But I do suffer with fibre overload, no one ever writes about that.
Sweetener, sometimes gives me heartburn
Curry doesn't
Dirty kebab does
Lamb doesn't
I have normal salt levels in my blood and I love my salt. |

It’s because the honey is used by bees as their food store, so you’re depriving them of their survival and taking their produce… at least that’s my (C) understanding of it. |

Not a fan of the fake “milks” / plant juice. Just does not have the same taste. Hardly drink any cow’s milk. Rare bowl of cereal now and again so not really needed to change. Other family members have switched to the Almond/Oat Alpro stuff due to lactose intolerance. I can’t get used to the taste so would rather go without than substitute. (Mr) |

Does that mean that vegans can't use other animal based products too? You know, the ones they don't talk about.
Sand is full of pulverised sea shells
Compost is full of dead animals.
Peat is a vegan alternative, but it not exactly eco friendly. |

"Does that mean that vegans can't use other animal based products too? You know, the ones they don't talk about."
Yes… where it is possible to use an alternative then we do so. If there is no alternative, then if we can go without, that’s the better option.
A case in point. I’m a photographer. Though I’ve been digital for over 20 years, there are aspects to the film way I enjoy, and appreciate for its differences and hands on approach. However, I’ve not touched it since going vegan. Gelatine is used in the process of attaching the emulsion to the celluloid and paper. So with digital I’ve no need for film as I’ve an alternative, and so me and film are done.
I’ve a compost bin so don’t have a need to buy, and as you’ve already mentioned peat is a very unfriendly option! |

When my little girl was small she had a dairy allergy so she has to drink alpro growing up milk.
If I ever make myself a drink now I only use that stuff as it’s about the only milk I actually like. |
