Just watched the news, and there is a shortage of midwives, most blaming mental health as thier reason for leaving.
Now im not disparaging people with genuine mentl health issues, but has this become the new bad back, ie hard to prove but easy to say.
Im aware this will be an emotive topic, and yes i know real mental health problems can be horrible, had friend who comitted suicide due to it.
But it seems to me that its the go to excuse these days |

Sadly you’ll always get some that abuse the trust of others.
I personally know a fair few girls that have used mental health as an excuse to get off work when in reality it’s been for other reasons
Their actions make it hard for people with real mental health issues to access the help available without facing criticism
Much like the “bad back” situation. It’s almost impossible to do much about it |

I think that actually, people are much more open about saying that they are struggling mentally because of how society is pushing forward with reducing the stigma and educating more people, employers etc. So most people aren't saying it just for a bit of time off work, they're saying it because they know they'll be taken seriously and there being no shame around it. |

I would imagine a job that has as much emotional involvement as nursing does, would nudge people to mental health stress. Top that with the work load, paperwork, lack of support, frequent threat of safeguarding, lack of basics like breaks to eat and drink...... |
