.....mince pies.
- Heston Night Before Christmas Mince Pie.
Heat according to instructions and you will experience a little taste of heaven that the pie accords before you've scoffed it. The pastry is to die for!
- Tesco Finest All Butter Pastry Deep Filled Mince Pies with Courvoisier.
Buttery pastry with a generous portion of cognac laced filling.
Has anyone else tried them?
What 'best' Christmas offerings can you recommend?

I like the pastry in a good mince pie also. The Heston one is amazing. It's slightly crunchy and not crumbly. |

A cup of freshly brewed, hot, strong coffee and After Eights ice cold and I'm happy."
Oh...I like that when I've been a glutton and over-indulged. How many After Eights do you have? About four for me with an espresso. |

Mine
I make my mincemeat in slow cooker. Mature it with lots of rum and then make a short pastry and use deep foils. They are delish if I do say so myself |

"I personally love the Iceland ones! Pastry to filling ratio is perfect, they’re £1 for a box, and suitable for vegetarians! I’m a cheap and cheerful type of lady what can I say Miss pc "
I must try them then. I like ones with a decent amount of filling.
It isn't the price. Fortnum & Mason's are really well below par for taste and they're about £13 a box. |

Try them and let me know what you think. I am going to stock up on them to freeze. I must admit that it could do with a bit more filling but the pastry makes up for that. |

I make my own. Nothing fancy. Shop bought jar of mincemeat. I make my own pastry. I do use half margarine, half lard, which isn't to everyone's taste, but does make very good pastry.
Shop bought mince pies are ok but the pastry always seems stodgy. The fillings can be a bit over-sweet or taste of nothing but alcohol too |

Seriously, try the Heston ones. They are the opposite of what you've described as what you don't like about the shop-bought ones. Funnily enough, I don't normally drink alcohol but I like my mincemeat to taste a little bit of cognac. |

It is dried fruits and spices, you're right. It just happens to be called mincemeat. Something to do with the pies being filled with minced meat originally, before the Victorians changed it into a sweet pie.
I'm not absolutely certain about that. Professor Google will have the answer. |

"Mince pies are overrated. Give me a warm classic panettone any day with some brandy butter spread on it.. for the fusion style dessert !
You're close to the edge there, madam! Over-rated? How dare you!
I'm always daring! You should know
I daresay, the fact that you need to supplement what is lacking in the panettone with brandy butter says it all, my dear. It simple can't measure up to the great mince pie.
Now you are balancing a red thin line haha! It's about elevating the flavour!"
The great mince pie needs no elevation. It stands on its own. |

"I used to get the ones from Lime Tree Pantry years ago, no idea if they exist now but their mince pies were perfection. Buttery shortcrust pastry in perfect harmony and ratio to soft mincemeant.
I haven't tried them, ever. You have made me want to seek some out although I must admit that I'm somewhat besotted by Heston's this year. Everything else seems to pale in comparison."
My home made ones are divine but I didn't make any mincemeat this year |

"Pecan flavoured Matchmakers!!!
Actually they were quite horrid, but they only had them in one little shop and nowhere else.
I'm starting to doubt if this really happened actually...."
They are lush, send them to me |

That sounds heavenly. Do you stick to the recipe or add some of your own touches? Is the filo pastry a little flaky but crunchy?
Heston has carrots in his mincemeat. It works really well. |

You get the crunch of the filo as you bite then the softness of the puff |

For how long do you steep the mincemeat? Care to share the ingredients? I'm sworn to your secrecy on pain of death, it'll go no further than this thread. |

Chocolate? Does it have a hint of chocolate taste to it? Is it a dark, bitter chocolate?
The pastry is exactly how I imagined it. Sounds heavenly. |
