"I fucking hate the Beatles
Poor you
Actually, whilst I don't hate them I don't subscribe to the 'oh my, what musical geniuses' school of thought"
To be honest one’s life would need to be quite tragic to actually hate a group that has been so influential, successful and brought joy to so many.
They’re not the 2nd coming and maybe not to everyone’s taste, but to hate them is a bit strong.

Hate is a bit strong they have an amazing catalogue of songs.
But they have an awful lot of garbage tunes as well. If you are going to be held up high on the pedestal as the greatest band of all time your catalogue should be flawless and theirs isn't.
There are better band's than the Beatles.
In my opinion

If anyone can show me a band that made 12 critically acclaimed, globally successful studio albums in 8 years (EIGHT YEARS!) then I'll stop saying the Beatles are one of the greatest bands of all time.
That's without the revolutionising pop music so that esoteric bands and music genres could blossom. |

Rain
(Ringo’s drumming is epic on it, for one thing )
There’s a lot of Beatles stuff I wouldn’t listen to, but they were pretty incredible. All in the space of about seven years, too.
I find the early stuff a bit too “tinny” to listen to, but from Rubber Soul onwards, I love them.
I saw an archive clip of McCartney doing “Long and Winding Road” on TV last night. Gorgeous song - he’s definitely deserves to be mentioned with the greats of popular music e.g. Duke Ellington and Brian Wilson. |

Led Zeppelin?"
I’m a fan of Led Zep (more Bonham and Jones, reall!)
I personally don’t think they can compare with The Beatles in terms of:
- range of styles, genres, recording innovations, cultural influence and experimentation. Regarding the latter, I remember The Chemical Brothers dropping Tomorrow Never Knows into DJ sets in the ‘90s, and it sounding more modern than anything else
- the innate harmonic knowledge/‘musicality aof McCartney, Lennon and Harrison, plus their ability to conjure melodies. Songs like Here, There and Everywhere are seemingly simple, but are harmonically complex - way beyond what other almost all other musicians came up with at the time, or since.
I think if you strip many Beatles songs down to just piano, they are masterclasses in compositional skills.
That’s just my take. I should add that I don’t like all their songs! |

Very guilty of plagiarism apparently. |

"Whatever music you like to listen to, if it was written after June 1st, 1967 then more likely than not it will have been influenced, one way or another, by Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band."
The most over rated album ever.
I love the Beatles and I know people say it's a landmark album.
Track for track it's actually quite poor. It hasn't a patch on Revolver or Abbey Road.
I wouldn't say Cream, Zeppelin, Allman Brothers, The Doors, Neil Young were influenced by that album at all.
But I understand at the time it was deemed a seminal piece of work.
It has not aged well at all.
In my opinion. |

No artist has a flawless catalogue. Bowie, to me, is probably one of the greats but he recorded some shite songs too, same for my idols The Rolling Stones. - Carl |
