Until 2020, I had a habit of visiting Castle Howard near York as a festive and birthday treat. Every year they have a different theme and the entire house looks glorious! They have a 26 foot tree in the great hall which takes 3 days to decorate. I just find it a very magical and special way to get the season started. ![](/icons/s/3/present.gif) |

Oh there’s so many. I love December! I fill it up with loads. I think the festive weekend in London with my friends once all the lights are up is my favourite. Ice skating with the kids, yearly trip Christmas shopping at lakeside where we spend most of the time in the champagne bar . I’m just a bit sad the kids are too old for all the visiting Santa stuff now! I need grandchildren ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

I love hearing what festive traditions people have planned! Wish my kids weren't so "cool" now but they will usually come out for a visit to see live reindeer ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Castleton is a lovely place to visit or local festive markets. I've gone off the big Manchester Markets a bit, too busy to enjoy compared to years ago.
This year we are going for a Christmas Illuminations walk around a wildlife park.

Really? Nope no-one does that anymore but they want me to paper up the doorway to the presents on Christmas Eve which our elf used to do. ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

The whole family goes to the theatre to watch Panto, followed by dinner out and then a walk through a well known part where I live where all the houses turn an entire road into a winter wonderland full of lights and music.
Then hot chocolate and Xmas movies at home! |

I feel bad now that I don't take my kids to Castle Howard. It costs a bomb! But walking around the decorations is free and fun ![](/icons/s/razz.gif) |

I love Christmas markets but covid has put me off a little, went to the opening day at york today and it was crowded so think all avoid Birmingham and Lincoln which are usually on my list.
I love walking around chatsworth gardens following the light trail. Looking at going to Alton towers as they have a light trail and the baby is fascinated with lights |

Chatsworth would be gorgeous! I haven't made it there in years. Perhaps a smaller, local market might be less crowded? |
