Have you ever seen anybody famous out shopping

Was on holiday a number of years ago. Went into local supermarket. While at the checkout I was aware of a tall looming figure behind me. I turned round and it was Lemmy from Motorhead buying some cigs!

Glen Hoddle in Harlow
Dr Jones who murdered his wife in Coggeshall
Mike Oldfield - he came in my shop. I didn’t recognise him until he gave me his name for a special order.
Keith Moon
Jamie Oliver in Saffron Walden market - a regular. And a great Saturday market. |

It was the late 90s, and I was in Sainsbury's Cheshire Oaks, picking up a sandwich for my lunch.
A man meets my eye and does that slight nod of recognition. I've had a LOT of jobs and frequently people I don't remember will stop and chat to me because they've worked with me. I assumed that was the reason for the nod, went over and starred chatting.
I wasn't getting much back from him other than bemusement but that's not unusual when I'm chatting so I basically monologued at him for a good five minutes.
"Hi, it's great see you... hope you're doing well... family all ok? I'm just nipping in for some lunch, you know they kicked us off site and into one of the new offices at the back of the park? Worked out well in fairness, we all got a decent payoff to buy our old contracts out... not sure how things are on site these days but I heard Dennis has escaped to South Africa and is refusing to come back... always said they had a poor grip on governance and that's what happens isn't it? You on your lunch? Anyway... look at me rambling on, only popped in for a sandwich and if I don't get back soon they'll be sending a search party out for me haha *fake laugh*. Really good to see you, tell everyone I was asking after them, really have to catch up soon, I never see anyone any more...".
Bought my sandwich, went back to the office, thought no more of it.
Hour or two later my brain kicked into gear.
It was Mick off Brookside, not someone I knew at all. He'd thought I'd clocked him, hence the nod, I thought he'd clocked me, hence the response. He must've wondered what the hell this complete lunatic was wittering away for.
I suspect that's why most celebs don't do their own shopping. |

"Terry Christian in a Supermarket in Menorca."
I met Terry Christian at freshers week at Herriot Watt many many years ago.
Also met Raquel from Only fools and horses buying petrol in a filling station in Benson outside Oxford.
Met Tom Yorke in a Motorway Service Area in early 90’s.

Dominic Wood (or you might know him as "Dick n Dom")
That's as famous as it gets.
I do chat to Sophie Price online though (Katie's sister) as she comes to TLD often ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

"Can't say as I have but surely they do shop occasionally "
Bit of a cheat, but I worked in Gap Kids in central London for my first job, so I served/saw tons of celebs during that time... Includingf Victoria Beckham, who had the shop closed early so she could peruse the shelves on her own.
I also lived close to an affluent part of south London, so spotted a few soap stars and television peeps in my local Sainsbury's quite often. |

"Walter Koenig (Chekhov from the original Star Trek) in an antique shop in London.
Possibly the most random moment of my life.
"Oh my""
That’d be George Takei (Sulu) ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

Danced with some guy who was in Grange Hill when I was in a bar in Benidorm
My Mum looks just like Dame Judi Dench & gets lots of looks, comments & autograph requests when out & about. To the point that people don’t believe she is not her.. she has her picture on a wall in a cafe in NZ.

I saw Alison Hammond (of Big Brother and This Morning fame) in the Bullring in Birmingham once. It was before she was presenting This Morning so wasn’t especially famous at the time.
Seen loads of Wolves players in my local co op. |

"At a party with Bez once "
Shared a funny cigarette with him once at a festival at Castlefield in Manchester. I was sitting on a bench with a few friends who smoked, he strode up and asked for a quick puff. We obliged and I had a go on it next. ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

Used to see Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall (Wild side\River cottage chef) from time to time at Headcorn Airfield car boot sales.
It crossed my mind to ask him to do an episode on catching bass with a hand line and lure from a sea kayak and then cooking it on the beach but then I worried that would be the one day the fish didn't bite!
Must have seen him on a friend's telly because I don't have one myself and probably couldn't recognise most of the people listed above so far.
Not a celeb person at all. Good luck to them and their admirers. It's not an activity for me. |
