Following on from the kettle thread. Whats the worst thing you've found / left / done in a hotel room?

If you've worked in hotels whats the worst thing you have had to deal with when cleaning up?

As a rule I try and leave the room as I found it, make the bed and put used towels in the bath but I bet theres some terrible tales to be told.

I once found a stash of drugs in the toilet system of a travelodge after investigating why it wouldn’t flush.

Also stayed at the kings cross travelodge which had a hole in the wall and could see through to the stairwell where a couple were at it…. Didn’t mind that one so much to be fair!

I generally leave the room as I found it which I always think is pointless once I’ve left.

I used to manage a hotel, and one guest couldn't open her door in time to her room, so did a huge poo on the landing, and then came to report it to reception.

I am a spoilt brat. I just tip the house keepers. My worst hotel experience was during a vacation in Africa. The intended place of visit (a forest) was about 70 miles away and it was already night. So we decided to stay in the closest city. Mosquito infested, room smelt of damp, no hot water, and it was cold by African standards and we were already acclimatised. No blankets. Haha. Done wild things

I worked in a welcome break years ago and would do reception and housemaid duties.

One time I opened up room number 29 (always remember) and there was a guy sat on the sofa so I said sorry and quickly went to close the door. Then realised that he didn’t acknowledge me and wasn’t sat upright was kind of slumped over, then I saw the vomit all down him and he just didn’t look right. I screamed cos obviously he was dead. He was 32, left a note and took a massive overdose (was a needle still in his arm) I was only 21 then.

Other things are shit on the towels and bed sheets. Our hotel was just off the motorway junction and people used to use the rooms during the day for a couple of hours. Used condoms everywhere. Worst one is someone on the ground floor captured a wild rabbit from outside and just left it in the room. It shit and peed everywhere. Chewed through the tv wire and then nobody could catch it for ages to release it. Had to throw a towel over it to try and scoop it up and take it outside.

Same! Usually when we've paid extra for late check out and have the "do not disturb" sign up. I swear they do it on purpose!

It’s never on purpose. You just get your sheet of rooms to do and it’s purely a case of that housemaid not being arsed to go all the way back to reception to keep checking if the keys have been handed in yet.

I’ve done it many times.

If someone pays for late checkout upon arrival, say, midday. It's 10:45 - why would the maid's sheet instruct them to clean the room? Surely the sheet should say "after midday"?

Anyway, yes, we've had staff walk in during all sorts of things and on one occasion, we got a refund because housekeeping knocked over and over again to the point where we couldn't get any peace and gave up on our (paid) late check out.

*to be clear, the refund was of the late check out fee. Not the whole cost.

I can add to the above, with varied experiences within my 45+ years in Hotel Management.

Hen / Stag party groups can be a nightmare for Housekeeping staff. I've often been called by Senior Housekeeping staff to view the appalling state some guests have left their rooms in!!

Like the couple who urinated & defecated in the bed, then purposefully smoothed out the sheet, and duvet on top as if the bed hadn't been slept in!

They were soon billed with a cleaning charge of over £200, as the bedlinen and mattress had to be destroyed, and the base professionally fumigated.

Or the male guest who left his "calling card" of turds in the en-suite shower! Again, another cleaning bill but he had the gall to challenge the cleaning charge until I discreetly called him and asked how he would feel if his behaviour was to become known in a Court Case? He paid up!

Guests smuggling in their dogs, which aren't house trained was another issue.

But why guests think it was quite OK to leave their bedrooms in such a messy condition, was beyond belief. Would they do that at home?

Knowing what neighbours on both sides have done to their houses, having witnessed the complete stripping out of both properties, unfortunately yes, some people do that in their own homes, Iain.

It was sometimes the attitude of guests when challenged about their "mess", when we'd hear their response of, "well, that's why you have room staff to clean up behind your guests, what is the problem?"

Invariably, hotels I worked in would automatically charge on their credit or debit card. Some of the hotel chains would also bar the culprits from any of their hotels for life!

Exactly, I usually tend to tidy the room at the end of my stays , put all the towels in the shower , everything goes in the bin and make it half okay so the cleaning people don’t think I was like a tornado cunt in the room and went.

when I go to airbnbs I’m at my worst on that front, I literally clean the whole house even if they charged for a cleaner.

I just can’t live with myself knowing I left a place in a shit state

People on here often brag about soaking the bed with 'squirt'.

Some people have no shame.

Worst was finding dark blood stains all over the bed clothes.

Went and explained it to owner who just blamed it on me, even though they’d quite clearly been there a long time.

Also in a different place found a used condom complete with someone’s spunk still in.

In India I was given a room overrun with cockroaches. The guy showed me to the room and when he turned the light on hundreds of them scurried under the bed

In Cambodia I woke up one morning to find an enormous hairy spider underneath me. I must have rolled onto it in the night and half crushed it

I stayed in a very swanky hotel a few years ago and on getting in to bed, I could smell eucalyptus on the pillow. Ah, what I nice touch, I thought, put scent on the bedding to aid a good night's sleep.

Fast forward to the morning... I pulled the bed sheets back and noticed the bed was full of black curly hairs

I'd just slept in some guy's bed, who'd had a cold - cleaning staff had obvs tidied the room and not changed the bed!

I do try to out everything in a bin but if I have bought something then often the bins are to tiny to get the rubbish in. So normally just leave a bag on the floor on the side with all rubbish in

I do try to at least leave it semi tidy. The rooms have to be cleaned and beds stripped anyway. So yes leave tidy but do t leave it tooo tidy

Somewhere near here

At a b&b in Leicester, really cheap. There were people shooting up on the stairwell, looked like there was some dealings out side. My room was tiny and weird, there was a partition wall that went up to the window, I could see the room next to me. The bathroom had a hole in the wall and saw someone looking in when I went to the loo.

I stayed in a guest house in Cambodia. The owner showed me the room. It had no glass in the windows and when he opened the wardrobe to show storage space the tail and hind legs of a rat could be seen scurrying off into the darkness.
