and feet.

Can anybody advise me where I can buy socks for very swollen feet and ankles. The ones made for diabetics aren't suitable I need to find much looser and stretchier ones than that.
Please don't post links, thank you |

Foot nurse, pillow paws. I pick hundreds of different types of socks on Amazon. Bamboo socks. Diabetic socks. Surgery socks. Swollen feet socks. I’d look on there. |

"B and M
Do good socks x
Thank you but I need socks that gently stretch to a wide circumference and won't restrict blood flow. Standard socks just won't do "
In stoke we have a market and the socks are great and very flexible xxx |

"Are you looking for compression socks without ribbed tops to help with oedema or is it just standard socks?"
I don't think I'm looking for compression socks...I don't know. My mum has heart failure, her feet, legs and ankles get very swollen due to fluid retention. Compression doesn't sound like it would be a good thing. It's definitely not standard socks |

I'm not sure I want compression socks, I need them to expand with the foot and ankle rather than compress it"
IOMI footnurse and AJ Hall both do soft socks designed to fit very swollen feet and ankles. I got some from Footnurse that fit my dad even through a very thick layer of bandaging, there was no compression and no pressure on the leg. |

"Dunelm Teddy Bear fluffy slipper socks! So comfortable and warm the blush ones are nice. "
I did think slipper socks might be the way forward but there's a mobility issue and I think slipper socks would compromise that |

Oh you're right, compression isn't normally recommended for fluid build-up due to heart failure, soft socks are the way to go.
The two I mentioned both provide soft socks in very wide sizes.
I hope you find something suitable. |

Oh I see what you mean now! So ones that will fit feet and ankles that are bigger due to swelling? I have some fluffy bed socks that are very stretchy. Or would getting men's socks for her be better? |

Her feet are extremely swollen men's socks are no good and bed socks are ok but dangerous when we're helping her move about because they make her feet slippy. I'm on the verge of making some |

HJ Sock Specialists.
There are a few conditions where compression socks are not advised. |

"Footnurse Gentle Grip socks. My Grandad wore them, he had heart failure.
Is your mum on suitable medication? My Grandad's oedema was improved substantially with adjustments to his medication. "
I have to trust that she's on suitable medication I'm not informed enough to know. She's frequently hospitalised 15 times this year and they adjust her medication each time. Footnurse and Halls seem to be the way to go. |

I have Raynaud's phenomenon so I can't stand the bands of socks or anything that restricts blood flow in my legs. The best socks I've found are the really rubbish fluffy socks as they don't have that ribbed band. Not brill with shoes but good with slippers at home. |

A specialist cardiac nurse visiting Grandad at home was the way we got his medication sorted. Being admitted to hospital is no guarantee she's seen by a cardiac specialist unfortunately. |

Mum has the number of the cardiac unit at the hospital to contact as and when. As I say I have to trust that her medication is correct |

"Maybe ask adult services or the district nurse?"
If I thought I stood a chance of speaking to someone more quickly than sorting the information myself I would. Unfortunately my experience is that it's nearly impossible to talk to anyone who can give you answers for this sort of thing |

Cosyfeet.....socks don't look too roomy to me, but wide range of roomy slippers with flexible velcro fastenings etc. No quibble money back guarantee, free returns. Have had positive experiences with them in the past with slippers with the elderly. |

Is your Mum not on water tablets NC?
The consultant that saw Mum last time gave her a water tablet that have brought her legs right down and eased her discomfort a hell of a lot |

Yes she is but she's in the very last stages of heart failure. Fluid on her lungs, swollen abdomen, legs, feet and ankles. Diuretics can only do so much at this stage, it's more about making her as comfortable as possible now. |

At the minute, I am allowing her to relish in the comparitive joy of being able to lift her own legs into bed for the first time in a while |

I don't know what to tell you Bussy. It's not a smooth curve, she'll probably have times when she gets much better and a change in medication often gives a boost. Have you got things like an electric chair (that sounds bad but you know what I mean I hope ) and all the mobility aids etc? |
