I stick out my leg from the open side cut of my long red dress, flatter my eyelashes and they're in the palm of my hand

Rubbish probably because when I think about it I'm not 100% sure I know what it really means

Neither did I, I just went with the 1st definition on Google

Is it when you pretend to know something you don't in order to gain an advantage or is it when you talk someone into giving you something? Or is it a general ability to talk your way into anything?

I should have done that. If we pretended we knew would that be blagging?

Depends on which definition we go by I think

You will find most people think they are blagging at work but when it comes to having to produce something meaningful they actually can.

It's known as imposter syndrome

There are also those who blag and dont have a clue at all but they are in the minority in work environments I think anyway

Ok then I'm rubbish, I'm too scared they'll find out that I can't really perform complicated brain surgery and that would be really awkward.

Actually I know a friend of a friend who's like that. He's a funny bastard but for about 2 years he just worked jobs he had no qualifications for but got through blagging.

Worked as an engineer for 8 weeks before they realised he didn't have a clue. Was a software developer for about 3 months. Worked in construction project management for 4/5 months.

Never made it past the initial review period but fair play for trying

Absolutely useless at it. I’m so black and white I can’t pretend anything.

I blagged my way into a higher position at work last year, was a bit nervous thinking I’d struggle. Within a week or so I realised literally everyone above me and around me were doing the same thing haha.

I think that's probably very true if lots of higher positions at work. I know I've spent most of my working life with managers who clearly have no idea what they're doing

It can be very frustrating for others when they keep their integrity and have to work for bull shitters who don't know what they're doing, so they delegate every task...

Is it the old qualification over experience, I had a manager that had all the bells and whistles on qualification wise without 1 iota of common sense

Terrible! I'm such a linear thinker that I can't help but give a straight answer to all questions. And if I tried to lie / stretch the truth, I'd out myself within a minute or two because I have a terrible memory!

Sometimes but quite often in the environment I worked in it depended on the person at the top and how certain faces and ideas fitted with them. If the person at the top went all tiers of management usually got a spring clean with the new incumbent. They were never any better just differently bad

"How competent are you at Blagging "

I was in a meeting last week in which I was unexpectedly called on to speak at.

After I’d finished I wrote a note to my colleague sat next to me.

Simply said

A* Blagging.

Oh no that's the worst team imaginable, no room for growth if you are not challenged

Yeah a lot above me had way more qualifications than I did but I know the hands on side of the job a lot more. I thought it would be way out of my league until I started working with people higher up the chain. It seems the higher the pay pocket the less you actually know

My experience is that they were rarely good all rounders. They'd either be very knowledgeable but lacked people management skills or vice versa. Either way the team ended up performing one of these roles on their behalf

I have terrible imposter syndrome. I'm always convinced my success is down to good luck but I'm about to be found out. If my manager asks for a meeting without telling me what it's about I go into panic mode because I'm convinced I'm about to be fired for incompetence.

Logically and rationally I know I'm very good at what I do. I have plenty of evidence to prove it and I can demand (and get) a fair old whack of cash for doing it.

Doesn't stop me stressing myself out and constantly overreacting though.

As a result I never blag when it comes to work. I stress myself enough without adding that to the mix!

I don’t blag, I’m honest, if I don’t understand something, I’ll just say.

I can blag pretty proficiently until I get caught out, but I guess that is an unavoidable risk in blagging. Luke

Awful, I used to have a really bad stutter when I was younger and although I grew out of it, it's definitely a tell when I'm trying to blag.
