I always associate pride with being negative. Actually I find arrogance to be a more favourably attribute because to me it means that someone knows their stuff very well. |

Arrogance is when people think they know when actually they don't have a clue, what you refer to is Confidence.
Pride is not negative as long as you are not to Proud to own your failures |

In extreme when pride becomes a perception that you’re better than someone else because of an attribute - im not really explaining it well i dont think but - when it’s excessive then i think its negative. In general though i think having pride in yourself or your actions is a good thing. |

Met plenty of arrogant people who are very ignorant. Pride in oneself, isn’t a bad thing as long as you’re not projecting it in a negative way. You can always inspire others to see their better side as well. |

Taking pride in doing many things to a good standard is commendable and not negative.
Take pride in how you treat others.
Take pride in how you look when it matters.
Take pride in never causing harm or hatred.
etc etc.....
Being so proud that you cannot see how ridiculous you've become is not positive...... e.g. The Emperor's New Clothes.
Arrogance is not always negative but is very often an ugly trait when the arrogance leads to delusions of superiority and you look down on others.
There is nothing wrong with being proud of what you achieve if you achieved it in the right way for the right reasons.
Inner pride builds good folk.
Bragging is for the 'under baked' ( serious bragging that is ) |

Pride comes before a fall! We’re told that shit by the same people that tell us to have a bit of pride in our appearance. Just another one of life’s contradictions. Some people in life will try and keep you down so they feel better about themselves.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with pride. |

I disagree. No one ever really knows anything. We are allowed to have opinions and beliefs and be wrong .... that's not arrogant. |

Being wrong, misguided or not really understanding was not what I meant, was only trying to point out that there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Having a belief in yourself is good, thinking you are better then you ar is not |

Absolutely! Which comes from keeping people down for your (their) own benefit.
I’m either getting paranoid or finally opening my eyes. Can’t decide which

"Being proud is fine. Being boastful is offputting.
Arrogance is not attractive. Confidence is massively attractive."
I do like some arrogant people.
They have good traits and know what they are doing. They are not cruel or mean to others and enjoy being able to espouse their 'greatness' at something. |

Arrogance doesn’t really have anything to do with whether someone is good at something, it’s when some acts in an insulting or belittling way because they believe that they are better, smarter, or more important than you, so it is the flip side of confidence, not an extension of it and it isn’t really associated with pride. Pride can be quiet, and unassuming, taking pride in your achievements doesn’t necessarily mean you say anything about it to others, pride isn’t necessarily shared, although tends to be more so when you show pride in other people’s achievements, and as long as that isn’t something you try to make yourself feel more important for, can be a wholly positive emotion. |

"Maybe it's just me then but I would rather have an arrogant doctor or lawyer rather than a proud one "
Well I will stick my neck out and say that you are one of the many who is fooled by what people say rather than what they are actually capable of and do.
That's the kind of mentality that thinks Rees Mogg was simply born to lead..... cos he said so.
How does arrogance make a doctor good at doctoring ??? |

I'm not saying it makes them good, I'm saying that in my opinion they're probably better than proud doctors or lawyers |

I’d still want to see their past history with diagnosing illnesses or winning cases. Being arrogant doesn’t guarantee that they are successful in their profession. |

As with many such discussions, the words mean different things to different people, and we apply them differently depending on circumstances.
Taking pride in something is fine to a point. Poblems come when people falsely attribute their successes entirely to their own ability.
Also, taking pride in something leaves us blind to our failings. I think it's far better to take care than to take pride. Take care to treat others with respect, take care to do a good job etc etc. Care implies an ongoing process, pride tends to rest on its laurels.

Nothing wrong with taking pride in yourself, your achievements and your family and friends.
When pride becomes negative or has a negative effect is when it prevents you getting the help you need. I often hear "at least they still have their pride" well that's cold comfort if it means you're living with huge difficulties or struggling really badly. |
