Bought one from the store and tried it for the first time and thought the sauce was a bit thick and sickly. Then I read the ingredients which said it had CHOPPED DATES in it!
Is it normal for it to have those in there? |

"The nicest one I had was at a Beefeater, but they skimped on the custard.
Should've done the opposite and skimped on the sauce "
They are in the pudding not the sauce |

"Yes, very normal
My stomach isn't feeling very normal after eating it
I don't eat it for the same reason "
Good call. All this time I thought I was missing out but now I know I wasn't! |

It would be fine if you hadn't known... Just full of sickly sweet pudding lol"
Yeah, but now I do know, it's all I can taste and I can feel the texture of them. They violated my mouth! |

"Dates are the key ingredient in it , very good for your digestion and if it’s done right you can’t even taste them "
Maybe because it was store-bought I could still taste them. I can eat plenty of other things I like good for digestion |

"Base of all decent STP recipes… made one today. I blitz mine do you get the flavour without chunks. "
Yeah, but the problem is you still have the flavour |

I thought this was an appreciation thread.
I bloody LOVE sticky toffee pudding and I don't like dates. I think you just got a wrong un. Try one at a proper pub with some custard and you may change your mind. One of my very favourite English things! |

Well I never knew STP had dates in - not that I care, I like dates. Fab really is a source of wonderfully esoteric information - and strange people who don't like dates.

"OP do you eat Branston pickle ? That has dates"
I didn't know the ingredients of Branston pickle until we just googled it... well I am learning all sorts of new stuff from this thread. Thanks

I do know it's irrational for me to not like them but I don't and won't eat anything that I know has them in.
Dates remind me of cockroaches. I lived in Cyprus for 3 years and woke from sleep one night screaming and we had an infestation with them all over the place crawling on me and my brother.
Yes it's irrational and I know that, to be scared of an insect now, but I still am and dates have been associated with them since then.
Cheers too Slinky hehe, not that I ate much, but not touching Branston anymore |

Shop bought sticky toffee pudding can be too heavy and the sauce cloying. I make my own. The longer you soak the dates first the better. It should be light and the sauce is lovely if done right.
But what's this about eating it with custard?!
I would only ever have it with cream |

They're a bit grim. They're over sickly and the texture isn't great. Always makes me gag |

Maybe. It was a store-bought and from Aldi so prehaps my expectations shouldn't have been too high |
