Mr is always at the gym, I'll give him his due.

But I find it so hard to stay motivated to go but I know I need to!

How do you motivate yourself to go?

I set myself a challenge, like so many workouts in so many weeks or to lift so many kgs. I also reward myself for a good week with a meal of my choosing!

Not been to a gym for over 30years. I prefer swimming and walking.

Set yourself goals like aiming for a personal record on a lift or run 5k under a certain time. When you see the lifts going up or the times coming down it becomes addictive

I’d gym with him, I used to gym with my ex but we stopped going because I embarrassed him… I’m competitive so would lift heavier and do more reps

Depends what you want to achieve. Don’t feel like you need to go to a gym if it’s not something you enjoy. If it’s something you want to have a go at properly I’d suggest a PT for a few months so you get the confidence to know what you’re doing around the gym it will also give you motivation knowing that you have an appointment until you catch ‘the bug’

I've tried before but he's very strong compared to me so it actually makes me feel worse training with him

OP, can your partner not motivate you to go with him?

That would definitely work for me.

I joined a gym 9 weeks ago to lose weight and trim up and since then had 2 very bad bugs and put my back out so I've only had 2 weeks working out and I've now put on half a stone. Hopefully after my holiday next week I can really crack on .

I no longer bother with the gym. I run 3-4 times a week, karate twice a week and press ups, sit ups and free weights at home

Got to find a workout you enjoy, plus little goals, human nature to like it more when you are clearly achieving something

"Got to find a workout you enjoy "

100% agree, the best workouts are the ones you stick to. Doesnt really matter if its lifting, running, swimming, cycling or whatever

Personally, if my trousers start to get tight then that’s motivation enough to either start exercising again, count or even up the anti. Plus I agree with the enjoyment aspect, it really helps if you find something you enjoy doing.

It's about finding something that motivates you personally

I was a couch potato for 20 years then stumbled across triathlon and for me it is something that makes me want to listen to the one voice not the other 100 in my head telling me it's a bad idea

If the why is strong the how is easy

I know its cliche but it is true and works

Food, whenever I start to make an excuse not to go to the gym I eat a piece of chocolate, I use the sugar rush to kick me out the door. Works every time.

The other motivator I use is not eating until I get back from the gym. I'm not sure if that is the right or wrong thing to do but it makes me want to get there so I can get back to eat

The feeling that you get afterwards, it's a natural high.

I feel so much better physically and mentally when I exercise. I haven't been able to go as my this last fortnight and boy am I feeling the negative effects.

Back to it from Monday.

Knowing there's a steam room, jacuzzi and a pool as the reward for the less fun stuff keeps me going.

And knowing I can grab a hotdog from the cinema over the road afterwards if I'm really struggling.

It's normal to feel unmotivated sometimes even if u gonna make it three times a week

Just don't beat urself over it but it's better to do it first thing in the morning ( or make sure it's a part of ur routine)

I use it to workout frustrations. Also It’s just somewhere where I forget all the other shit that may be going on in my life

Three reasons for me OP

1) The gym is the place I can switch off from everything else going on in my life so it’s an important place for my mental health.

2) If I feel like I look good, I also feel good about myself, with brings about so many other benefits.

3) Need to keep TG interested

Eating after exercise can be good but the best thing to eat is some light protein and a few carbs. This will help muscle repair and help replenish some of the body's energy store

A small amount of pasta in a homemade tomato sauce and a chicken breast or salmon fillet is my go to meal. The nutritionists amongst us might advise something else but I do enjoy it

I’ve been going to the gym 3-4 times a week since April and I’m not a natural when it comes to fitness. Finding the right gym has been the key for me. I e been to others over the years and never lasted long. At this one the instructors push me and mix it up when I’m feeling bored.

My main motivation though has to be the thought of getting naked in front of strangers Fab has definitely been good for my health!
