Anyone know anything about the home kits?

My nails are falling apart, and I was wondering about getting a kit, I can’t get them done at a salon.

Anyone else do this, and can advise?

I get occasionally ibx treatment under my shellac to strengthen them. Never tried home kit as I'm not good at doing them myself.

Gel nails are easy at home, you just get the kit with the lamp.

Or you could find a mobile technician? I did have a lady that came to mine for acrylics.

I bought the home kit via Amazon which was super cheap compared to Salon. Maybe cos I'm shit at crafty things but I made a right mess on a (closet TV) friend who didn't want to go to Salon (as a man). Unless you're ambidextrous, trying to apply on the dominant hand must be a right faff?

There are some tips for helping to do your non dominant hand. generally making sure you anchor the finger being polished and also the painting hand to stop you getting the shakes and looking like a 5 year old threw a hissy for

Gels are much gentler on the nails than acrylics.

A lot of cheaper gel kits won't have the builder gel which is the main one that helps give a stronger nail to prevent breakage etc while on.

Make sure to never pick the gel off either as you are peeling a layer of nail of and further thinning/damaging them - always soak off

quite easy to do yourself , just do a few very thin coats , rather than 1 or 2 thick ones . You can also buy a quick gel remover for about 4 quid that you just paint on and it scrapes off . Just take your time and do your crap hand first x

During the pandemic, I used Sally Hansen Hard as Nails which was great. My friend has her own lamp and she does her own gels and they look ace. I'm just way too clumsy.

I tried that one, and it doesn’t seem to work, and it seems to make my nails flake off too.

They are getting shorter and shorter

I find gel nails really easy to do and it's great not having chips etc, but I absolutely hate taking it back off by myself. That's the main reason I'd go get them done, the actual application is dead simple.

I always get mine done at a salon but a friend of mine has a home kit including the lamp.

You could have a look at lots of different salons because they really do vary quite a lot in price. When I lived in Southampton there was the salon that would do the gels for £10 but now I pay £22 but really like the lady that does it.

Oh this definitely.

I've only taken it off myself once after we went into the first Lockdown and it ruined my nails.

Hefty Hideaway

I got a shellac kit a few years ago.

It was a great success and I had the nicest nails!

Unfortunately I went a bit mad with it and now I’m horrendously allergic. Can’t even go near the nail salon without flaring up.

Moral of the story is do your nails once a month not once a week

I've tried picking, scr*ping, soaking, filing and those dissolving solutions you paint on - there is no quick or pleasant way to do it!
