In a strange quirk of history, the man who invented CFC's for refrigeration also discovered adding tetraethyl lead to gasoline stopped engine knock.
Since the phasing out of leaded petrol there is quite compelling evidence that (after a time lag of 18 years or so) violent crime levels have dropped around the world. Thomas Midgley managed to blast a hole in our ozone layer and start a global crime wave.
