Why are you calling breakdown for a flat tyre?? Unless your car doesn't come with a spare

I would say that the breakdown service will either swap your flat tyre with your spare/space saver or add the run flat, then see you on your way where you will have to get it repaired/replaced. Or they will tow you home or to the nearest garage for repair.

As already stated, breakdown cover is completely separate to your insurance policy and NCD.

Because you'll be waiting for about 2 hours for them to turn up when you could do it yourself in 5 minutes. Plus you've still got to go to the tyre shop to get a new tyre...you could do that and be home with a cuppa before breakdown have even got to you.

Why pay? They attempt to get you moving - replacing/swapping the tyre but not fixing it. If you have no spare they will charge you (and if driving on a motorway you could be fined/arrested). Using the service when you could not is only worthwhile if your time waiting is worth less than the subscription. And no, it doesn't normally link to your no claims - unless you have damaged the car and that is why you need the AA!

Always pays to read the terms and conditions before signing up for the service.

You're paying for breakdown cover, not a maintenance contract.

There are plenty of reasons people can not or will not change the tyre and whether they are male or female is beside the point.

Do you people farm your own veggies, hunt your own meat, do all of your own tech support, fix your own broken leg, construction work in your house and make everything that's in your house, TVs, appliances etc?

If not then what's your problem with me calling breakdown cover to change my tyre, for which I already paid for

Hahaha actually yes i do!! (Thanks Perazzi... those of you that know, know!!)

I am all for getting your worth, 2hat you paid for, however, sometimes to save you a massive wait and a losd of grief, it really is not that much of a ballache to do yourself, thus saving services possibly needed for say, an elderly couple in need of help, a vulnersble female who feels she is at risk, an NHS worker....or such like!

Very few cars have spares these days, a can of foam maybe but that won’t repair a blow out. Breakdown will normally tow you to nearest tyre place if you don’t have run flats

I was taught a valuable lesson by a previous insurance company. Never call them for anything outside of an actual claim. Because they list anything as a claim. After 5 years I am still being asked about a claim I didn't make.

No because its not an accident

Well for one they may not come to you in the first place because alot of breakdown services will only come out if you are a certain distance away. For example they will not come out if you are 2 miles from your house

Changing a wheel is a ten minute job. Imo you shouldnt even be even allowed to drive if you cannot perform the most basic of maintenance

The fact you didnt even notice you had a flat whiile driving is also worrying tbh

Where does it say he drove with a flat tyre? He says he went to the gym (method of travel not specified) and came home and noticed his car tyre was flat. It's perfectly possible he walked or cycled to the gym and upon returning, noticed his car on the road/drive with a flat tyre. He states he uses it infrequently.

This is not possible for many people (me included). I used to be able to change my tyre, in fact it's one of the first things I had to do in a petrol station in Leeds, after I'd passed my test. My first solo road trip!! I can't do it anymore. I would get Mr KC or a passer by to help me. A colleague helped me the last time (very kindly).

You've accused him of driving in a unsafe manner, on a flat tyre but you now admit it's not possible to say that. Perhaps consider a little before accusing people of doing unsafe things.

He went to the gym (transportation method unknown)

He came home and noticed a flat tyre.

That's all we know.

I could actually send a photo of me doing exactly that, all my body weight standing on the dam thing and couldn't get it to budge. And not just on one wheel nut, on several. But according to posters I shouldn't be driving if I can't change a tyre.... Madness!

Id love to be able to change a tyre. But I can never get the sodding wheel nuts off.

Otherwise I'd be fine to do it myself.

You sort of have to jump/ step on the wrench slightly to get the nuts to loosen.

I could actually send a photo of me doing exactly that, all my body weight standing on the dam thing and couldn't get it to budge. And not just on one wheel nut, on several. But according to posters I shouldn't be driving if I can't change a tyre.... Madness! "

Obviously you should put lead in your boots. Or something

Break the nuts before jacking the car

If you are home and have decent tools you can use the closed head of a spanner at the end of the breaker bar to create an L shape which gives you exponentially more leverage

One of my legs doesn't work. I have to do it from a wheelchair. I'm not even going to try, thanks. I'll ask someone to help me.

If the service that has been paid for offers a wheel changing service why can't it be used. You might not want to call them out but you could, your choice as this is his choice.

No its not

And this is probably the reasonn why the distance from home clause is in breakdown recovery as people probably ring them thinking somone will fix it for "free" instead of getting a mobile tyre fitting service

Breakdown service is there to get you home safely if its possible. Not your personal on call mechanic for the price of your insurance

Breakdown policies can be purchased that include breakdown at home. My policy covers such eventualities. And it's via a specialist insurer for disabled people, but shush. Don't tell anyone.

And I'm agreeing with this statement!! It's breakdown not maintenance and why you should learn to change a wheel. The rain why I say breakdown service costs are do high is because people call the service of for this they shouldn't. But I am aware most modern cars don't even have a spare wheel so that's not possible. It's where a car does have a spare wheel and then people call our the breakdown service simply to change a wheel that I'm saying is crazy

The more you know about your car and its constituent parts the better driver you have the possibility of being.

"When it comes to car insurance, or is that separate?"

It's separate. Lord knows what this lot are banging on about. It is an emergency breakdown cover though so you don't get a free tyre out of it. You'll still have to sort that yourself so you may as well just call a mobile tyre service. Especially if you don't need to use the car.

My comment was mainly aimed at the poster earlier who said anyone who cannot change a tyre shouldn't be driving.

I'm very aware of how to change one, I've done it before when I was able. I'm no longer able. I also know how my car works and usually am able to tell the garage or breakdown operator exactly what's wrong. Doesn't help me fix it though.

This is a deviation but if you don't mind me asking, what was the situation / condition that led to the loss of use of your leg ?

..-It's just out of interest from a health/medical point of view. You can pm me if you wish (- or not answer x)

One scenario i'm facing is getting plates/screws in my spine which i don't want as it will have a negative impact on my articulation/flexibility/mobility..

"The car is at home.

I've noticed the flat when I came back from the gym.

I don't use the car often and I'm not stranded.

I paid for a breakdown service.

If someone has a problem with me calling them for something I already paid for, guess what...I couldn't give a flying fuck

The fact you didnt even notice you had a flat whiile driving is also worrying tbh"

What a rediculous comment. So disabled people shouldn't be allowed to drive?

Also if its a slow puncture it's entirely possible that the tyre was still inflated when he parked and deflated since. Should we say you shouldn't be able to drive as you don't know how slow punctures work?

This really pisses me off. Your vehicle goes in for service and some numbnut does the wheelnuts back up with a windy-gun , you go to change a wheel and need a fucking three foot piece of pipe slid over the wheel brace to shift the bastarding nuts.

Just needed to get that off my chest.

Newer higher end impact wrenches do have torque settings and limiters. Never had an issue removing wheel nuts. They must be over tightening them

they should be tourqued to speck, if not find another garage, as obviously the one you use dont know what they are doing, every bolt/nut etc has a tourque, and if it doesnt then its not hard to work out what it should be depending on thread pitch and size, anyone who doesnt know this should not be alowed near a car

I had three tyres go a few months apart. In lockdown when I barely used the sodding car as I was sheilding. Needed a guy each time to help and even then they all struggled too. 3 different wheels and different guy for each I might add. It's bloody annoying. Maybe my car is just a bitch.

So presumably didn't need to call you, a mechanic, to help then?

It's perfectly possible to drive a car but require assistance changing a tyre. If it was mandatory to be physically able to do that, it'd form part of the licensing process. And it doesn't. So, it's utterly irrelevant.

I'm going to assume that everyone knows the minutae of the maintenance and mechanism of operation of every machine they use? We can dispense, therefore, with mechanics, washing machine engineers, gas safe engineers*, etc?

Masked and Distant

If tyre blow out is on motorway, call breakdown.

If on any other road and there's a spare just change it.

I once had 2 tyres blow after hitting a massive pothole (thanks Scottish highways . ). Had no choice but to call breakdown, they towed me to tyre place and left me there.

To be fair, the guy in the dealership told me to call them even if I have a flat. I possibly would if it was on the driver side and I was on the motorway.

Otherwise it'd be more hassle waiting and getting someone else to do it than if I just whipped it off myself. Which I had to do last week.

"The car is at home.

I've noticed the flat when I came back from the gym.

I don't use the car often and I'm not stranded.

I paid for a breakdown service.

If someone has a problem with me calling them for something I already paid for, guess what...I couldn't give a flying fuck "

The clue is in the name, breakdown service. If you have actually broken down, a flat tyre that is actually outside your house (might want to check what cover you have because some covers don't cover quarter of a mile from your house) isn't really an "emergency" is it, your premium is likely to go up because you don't want to change the tyre yourself, is it really worth paying extra next year for something you could perhaps do yourself?. Not to mention the fact while they are changing your tyre they could be with someone that is actually stranded and needs help.

It's like calling ambulance for a splitter!

Worse would be on them bloody smart motorways. Which are all over the news. I don't make this up. I'm expecting an Essex tom thread on them smart motorways, evil buggers.

I suggest you go to a proper garage, one that will use a torque wrench to tighten the nuts/studs to the correct torque.

Over tightening can cause them to snap and cause the wheel to come loose.
