Sat here watching a film with a really good musical score and I've realised I love the sound of French horns.
What's your favourite sounding musical instrument and why? |

To the original poster. John Williams writes some amazing film scores and seems to love the French horn. One of my favourites is Jurassic park theme.

I like the clarinet, theres a busker in leicester and she plays it and its lovely. I used to love the accordian as my grandad used to play it and get it out at christmas, but there are lots of buskers(not proper ones) that just play the same little bit constantly |

He does write some good stuff but do you think it all has a similar feel? Like you can tell it's one of his pieces? My favourite film score is from Dances With Wolves by John Barry, very impressive and lots of French horn. Also one of my favourite films.
By the way, if you play the French horn you must have lips of steel! Lol |

Ok, goosebumps. I prefer prickles though! Lol. One violin or lots of them together? Very different sound but both great in their own way. |

Yeah its got a handle which turns a wheel across strings, the wheel acts like a violin bow on the strings and creates a wicked sound. |

Love the theramin (made my own a few years back) and most woodwind instruments, except saxophone which I think is too harsh a sound. Also, can't beat a good bit of fretless bass. |

The theramin is a lovely instrument, also if you have the right sax player and the right music behind it sax can be amazing! Shine on by pink floyd with dick parry playing sax is one of my favourite pieces of music. |

I'm not a fan of the sax as it's a strange hybrid. Love the Cor Anglais, my favourite woodwind. |

Pat Metheny's Pikasso 42 string guitar...a thing of beauty !
Also love the sound of the saxophone, tenor and alto, mainly.
And a muted trumpet always sounds beautiful in the right hands (Miles Davis's hands, mainly  ) |

Music is a very important part of my life and always has been - I love and play classical music including opera but I also enjoy contemporary music, Rock, R n B, Jazz, Swing, Pop etc. So depending on what I am listening to, what mood I might love the violin, cello and piano or it could be the saxophone and guitar. Then again I love percussion instruments - so it is difficult to answer this one in a brief statement. |

When I was learning to play the violin it gave everybody goosebumps, but I think they were the chalk scraping on a blackboard kind of goosebumps, not the 'Oh my God that boy can play' kind of goosebumps  |

I have to confess to not knowing that many sax pieces but I remember hearing Jean Michelle Jarre's Last Rendezvous years ago and that is one of the most hauntingly beautiful tracks I have ever heard, even without its tragic back story.

Has to be the guitar for me. I've been playing for 30+ years and in numerous bands. It's such a touch sensitive instrument, you can play the same.3 notes in so many ways depending on what mood you're in and how you hit the strings.. |

I love the concerto for two violins by Bach, Bruch;s violin concert and Mendelson's - but the the haunting sound of the cello sends shivers down my spine, too |

I love both, modern and classical guitar - and yes, it is a very sensitive instrument which can express so much emotion.

I love the French horn too, so atmospheric with its 'over the hills and far away' tone.
Try Wagner's Das Rheingold, the intro has eight French horns representing the river currents, the way it builds from nothing to a frenetic climax is incredible. Until the singing begins, I can't abide the operatic style and have to stop it there, lol. |

What is it they say about opera? 'It ain't over till the fat lady sings'. Definitely the case with Wagner. I think the best Wagner production I've ever seen is the one with Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd! I know, I'm a pleb!..... |

I agree with theramin. I keep being tempted to make one.
I also love string instruments, playing both classical and more contemporary pieces.
I'm listening to a lot of Rondo Veneziano lately, which I love. |
