Scariest Public Information Films

In the spirit of Halloween, lets talk about the scariest Public Information Films that delivered many frights in our childhoods by teaching us very important lessons while showing us the horrifying consequences.

I can remember so many that were pretty scary like Lonely Water and Searching for example. They didn't scare me but they were certainly creepy.

What PIF had you hiding behind the settee?

When I was younger there was a very frequently on tv warning about the dangers of young kids around ponds.

A little girl was playing near the pond edge trying to get a hold of a ball or something that had fallen into the pond.

She’s leaning, she’s leaning then you hear a scream. Then you just see the top half of her body floating in the pond.

Worked on me, I never went near one!

Then there was the “Charlie Says” ones.

Mans the one for electricity stations/pylons and some kid flying a kite and it gets stuck and he climbs to get it, he’s leaning, he’s leaning…then you just see him laying flat out at the bottom on the pylon.

It worked, I kept away from pylons!

Not one I personally would have seen.

But the Protect & Survive info shown during the 70’s made it look as though shit was about to go down..

I remember Charlie Says… and the ones about pylons. Terrifying.

Princes Risborough, Luasanne, Alderney

'the finishing line' from 1977 which they made us all watch in school about a kid who dreams up a railway tresspass olympics ... truly scarring to watch as a kid

The only one I can remember was the kids that snook into the power relay station, I think to retrieve a frisbee but can't be 100%.

I remember that one. Imagine how terrified people would be if they saw that back in the 70s.

The railway safety ones where they showed all these badly scarred/burnt up people and kids. Savage.

This one was traumatic -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxXDw3WOGQs

Doesn’t quite fall into that category, but has anyone seen the film “threads”

It’s just a very realistic look at what would happen in a nuclear war.

It’s not stylised. It’s not well written or acted. Or well filmed. It’s just brutally honest.

I feel everyone should watch it

The ones that warned of fireworks used to give me panic attacks. Especially the one with the little girl picking up the sparkler.

I had been hit by a firework as a child, I was on my Dad's shoulders and the fireworks shot across and knocked me clean off and exploded right above my head....it had burned my neck and chin as it hit me. Hated fireworks ever since

Worthing

The fire one where camera pans through burnt building and you hear echoing voices. Also a very old animated one called Tidy up at Night.

I remember another firework advert which was in a hospital and all you can hear the sound of a child crying from being injured by fireworks. Pretty haunting really.

Threads is horrific! It is indeed very well researched and made, just terrifying because it could really happen. People my age grew up worried that it actually would. The ultimate horror film.

I remember that one. They actually show the kid fry. Jesus!

I don't know how often kids really broke into power stations and to what extent that message needed to go out, but somebody clearly thought it was necessary. I personally think the security at that power station was at least partly to blame. That fence was rubbish.

Who remembers that Apache PIF where it was showed the dangers of playing on farms and messing with farm equipment?

The screams of the girl who drank killer were blood curdling.

Threads scared the crap out of me. Still the scariest movie I've ever seen.

There was one nobody else ever remembers about rabies. It was a black lab trotting about the place scaring everyone. Terrified me because the house three doors down had a black lab and I was convinced it was the dog from the advert, therefore it had rabies and we should immediately phone the police.

Anyone from outside Northern Ireland doesn't know the meaning of scary public information ads. Do a YouTube search for NI road safety ads, and if you're really brave check out this anti terror one that I remember being on TV when I was in high school:

But he showed us how to wrestle a crocodile. Proper useful public information that Tarzan gave us!

The nuclear attack ones from the 70s were pretty bleak.... Hide under a table...close the curtains...

That's Television... The drug of the nation.

I remember a PIF known as 'Dave' where you see a mother is preparing food while you hear two guys egging Dave to have one more drink and we then see Dave now in a wheelchair with severe brain damage being spoonfed by his mother.

Talk about a fate worse than death, eh?

The road safety one.

Hit me at 40 and there's an 80% chance I'll die one

Very hard hitting
