River Kings made me think of River God by Wilbur Smith - certainly includes travel, crime, adventure but all in ancient Egypt. Really good read.

Wild, by Cheryl Strayed falls into the travel and exploration categories and is a true story.

The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton is a good crime and action book

Alicante, Spain. (Sometimes in Wales)

If you like true travel/adventure, try "No picnic on Mount Kenya" by Felice Bennuzzi. It's a true story.

Three Italians break out of a British POW camp and using their homemade climbing kit take on Mt Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa. Of course, afterward for their ongoing safety, they have to break back in!

A great read.
