I swear pretending to work (when you've genuinely got nothing to do) is harder than actually working...

I used to check classrooms to see if anyone needed a hand, or go through the admin book to see if there was anything I could do.

My colleagues used to hide in the library or play solitaire on the PC in the office.

Years ago I had a contract where I was just there to make up the numbers. There was no work to be done, but my boss was full of helpful hints on how to look busy with no work to do.

Project Gutenberg was a godsend. Download classic novels in Word format, looks like you're hard at work when actually you're just reading.

I didn't last long in the contract because I don't cope with boredom very well, but I still use Project Gutenberg on my kindle.

Wow this is invaluable - thank you! Don't know if it would work in my office for the type role I have, but perhaps in a future job

I don’t envy you Amber. I worked in a really quiet book shop once. I've never been so bored in my life. Not even I can read that much.

My current job is quite the opposite and there is always something somewhere to do.

This would work... If we didn't have an instant boiling water tap.

Take a piece of paper and walk about the building looking important. Stop at various desks and chat idly but keeping a concerned look on your face.

Back to the office has resulted in us catching a horrible disease of some sort, both of us now feeling horrific. I preferred WFH

I'm still WFH. I believe they're giving people the option based on their productivity and home situation.

They get much more out of me WFH. If I come up to a mental block I can come away for 15 minutes and make that time up later in the day. I'd have to constantly be on the ball in the office.

I also like the quiet. Can't get that in open plan offices.
