For me it's sense of humour, but having something in the message to respond to.
I'm unlikely to respond to "hey" or "ur tits are sexy" because there's nothing to respond to. Equally I'm unlikely to respond to "wot u into" because it's too broad and I just can't be arsed.
A question from a forum post or about something in my profile normally gets a response, because it's something specific to respond to. |

Things that encourage me to respond to a message:
1. They're hot.
2. They actually meant to send me a message, rather than just hitting the wrong button in the forum.
3. There's something in the message I can reply to. |

I will reply if I see a conversation will go somewhere. I also reply to amuse myself. Sometimes I message myself just so I can practice my polite responses 
Seriously though, I reply because I polite, which can be pushed sometimes in messages.  |

i try and reply, because its the polite thing to do.
its not always feasible though.
ones i want to reply to are usually the friendly faces i know from forums.. or if someone sends me a whopper of a one liner that has me on my ass laughing.. that always deserves a 'bravo'  Px |
