want to be part of a community I will never know!

Doesn't that mean that all participants therein just end up being part of an homogenous blob?

No. People still remain individual members of that community who can do and achieve things together. It strikes me as a very strange question.

I suggest than none of us would be able to survive without being part of a community. There would be no food in the shops for a start.

Of course, many choose to not put anything back and just take what they need in the mistaken believe this means they're rebelling against society/community. My name for people like this begins with a c.

This question suggests you lack the basic understanding of the definition of a 'community' and are instead confusing it with a 'cult'.

"want to be part of a community I will never know!

Community, the scientific definition is:

"A community is a group or association of populations of two or more different species occupying the same geographical area at the same time,"

By definition, a community requires more than one type (species) of organism so it cannot be homogeneous.

The original question is therefore flawed.

You're welcome

What you take doesn't matter, what matters is that you put in what you can. A child born with severe mental and physical disabilities is always going to "take" more than a healthy neuro-typical person and that's ok. This is how society and community works by providing for those who can't. What isn't ok is that healthy person refusing to offer what they can but still expecting to be able to take.

As Mr NBVN said above there are circumstances in which taking is justified. But if you have no excuses and live just for yourself, yes that I find hard to comprehend and quite meaningless life to live.

The ones that 'live only for themselves' don't they tend to end up in prison for long or shorter stays?

Of course some do function quite well too within 'communities'.

Its a community, not the Borg.

Some level of individuality and diversity is welcomed in almost any community. Even in a cult people's individual talents and strengths are exploited.

This is exactly why I have left some groups and clubs in my hobbies. If you have skills and experience there are always those that will use and abuse you until your participation in said group is no longer fun. One such scene in which my son has now become involved in still has members from my day, who regularly ask what’s dad doing and does he still do x, y and z and basically asking if free use of my skills are still available 30 years on.

If I take my local community as an example, a large number of backgrounds and several nationalities are represented, along with a range of age groups and work / educational backgrounds. So when the group comes together to do or discuss anything, it’s a pretty diverse group. That’s what I think of as “a community”. People who have lived here all their lives, others who have grown up in different areas abs countries etc. And belong one another on a broad range of local issues, not a group that has come together to address one single cause.

Of course!

My family is a community. My friends group is. My workplace is. This site is. The porn forum I'm on is. In each situation I may feel a central pillar of that community or I may feel no more than a peripheral occasional visitor, but I'm still a part of it.

I keep my own personality in each of those communities, though they are all very different in their group dynamics.

You do know the Internet isn't a real thing? The world isn't divided between sheeple and clued in people.

The sheeple who believe the earth is flat are not homogeneous and neither are the people who believe vaccines are a global conspiracy to create a new world order are not homogeneous either. If you go onto a pokemon chat board you will see deep divisions and contrasting views.

I'm part of two online communities where I participate. Here and bdsm. Neither of them are homogeneous or anything close.

What communities do you think are homogeneous?

Well put, there are often differences when seen from within.

BUT you have to go in to see them.

When viewed from without MANY can seem homogenous.

"You do know the Internet isn't a real thing? The world isn't divided between sheeple and clued in people.

The sheeple who believe the earth is flat are not homogeneous and neither are the people who believe vaccines are a global conspiracy to create a new world order are not homogeneous either. If you go onto a pokemon chat board you will see deep divisions and contrasting views.

I'm part of two online communities where I participate. Here and bdsm. Neither of them are homogeneous or anything close.

What communities do you think are homogeneous? What makes you think that everything discussed on the thread so far was Internet inspired?

I've been around longer than that! I'm sure.

The Internet is insidious. Even luddites have Web pages and pod casts now"

Whatever you have to say make it worthy.

What communities do you think are homogeneous? Well put, there are often differences when seen from within.

BUT you have to go in to see them.

When viewed from without MANY can seem homogenous.

If the white nationalists win and there are only white people left in the world, pretty soon they would turn on each other because obviously the true whites are the blondes or gingers or what ever other bullshit they decide is important.

We all want to be special and be part of the true (insert belief here)

Individuality is a gift from God. Or our pre human ancestors. We don't cherish it enough So by this you mean that the members of ANY particular family will eventually turn on one another because of differences?

So communities are truly worthless?"

I don’t see where the poster said that.

Not all communities are single-issue, like white supremacy. Most communities are border in their intake, setup and output.

No. Communities are not all worthless.

no aggressive communities that "other" people are always going to "eat themselves"

Communities in general are healthy.

For a community to hold together there must be some compromise.

I dispute that certain types will ALWAYS "eat themselves"

They may live quite contentedly without "others"
