As a woman I find it truly frustrating that I can go on the internet and watch all the free porn I want yet it would seem there is no “research material” on the vagina from an educational perspective…

There are drawings and cartoons and plaster casts but no actual photos!! Why is this?!

At 18 years old I was embarrassed of mine and there was no one to tell or show me then it was normal and it seems 17 years later nothing has changed!

Are genitals still taboo??

Is it the same for male genitals?!

Well, I've never found any research photos but men are incredibly proud of their genitals - they've been drawing cocks everywhere since humans learnt to draw.

Also, while men may worry about the size of their penis they all seem to believe that theirs is a work of art. Insults about female genitalia tend to focus on looks, whereas for men it tends to be size.

There's actually an Instagram page called the.vulva.gallery that's meant to celebrate diversity and to educate

There was also a story line on Netflix's show Sex Education which brought this topic up recently

I just did the simplest google "vagina education", and got linked from YouTube, teen vogue, the Mayo Clinic and loads of others without having to hit the next page. Most things are there (on the internet doubly so) if you just look hard enough. The biggest hurdle to education is generally wanting to learn, or simply having any form of curiosity at all. Having said that, the signal to noise ratio is rather high, and so for those of a younger persuasion I'd probably be uncomfortable asking e.g. my kids to go look up what's happening to them during puberty for example without supervision. Having had kids go through sex education at school, it's not quite the biology lesson it was when I was there, so there's that too. Then again, until the last century or so really almost everyone just learned on the job, as it were...

Have stumbled across stuff on YouTube as mentioned. It's hit and miss though.

Education relating to the female body and reproductive health is still disgracefully poor. The recent programme with Davina McCall discussing the menopause was good though and I've since found a lot of good resources relating to that.

Further to this point though, I don't think any amount of education will necessarily (it may!) help the 18 year old you. It's an absolute doddle to find average and recommended body weights, and yet children still have eating disorders based around issues relating to their body image. There are some things that can be taught as facts (no-one will ever get maths dysmorphia about 2+2 being 4) and others which whilst easily evident to most will not hold true to all. Anything related to sexual or body issues is easy to cover with a blanket that says "There is no normal, or abnormal, there's just you and that's fine" but that doesn't mean the person under that blanket will believe it and not feel comfy under it. Obviously I don't know the answer, who does, but I do know that somethings can't be fixed with resources and evidence and materials. It's why there will always be war, some things can't be taught and can only be experiences individually until you've made your own conclusions, if they could we would have knocked that on the head years ago.

I think it's the nucleus accumbens, which is where all that good dopamine comes from when stimulated by fruit machines, computer games, sexual adventures and addictive drugs! A good hit of dopamine and a lashing of endorphin is what gives masochists that sense of flying!

Do you mean vulvas? Surely images of different vulvas can be found on the internet - at least I hope so. I loved the storyline in Sex Education when Aimee made vulva cupcakes

Not at all, both are a wonderful creation, for sure guys have it a lot easier than women (which is a bit unjust). Lover of both: penis and vagina (preferably smooth), and of course not forgetting the arsehole (just as tasty).

Female health, "reproductive" and menstrual health in particular, are indeed very under-researched areas. Endometriosis is a good example, it's as prevalent as diabetes but there's actually very little research into it. Especially when you compare it to the wealth of knowledge we have about diabetes.

The Vagina Museum are a great resource, they've had some absolutely fascinating online lectures over the last couple of years. Definitely worth giving them a follow on your socials.

I have been to the Vagina Museum recently and one of their aims is to change that. They still provide content online and some interesting workshops or exhibits to join..

I'd really like to go see the museum itself tbh, I'm only familiar with them through their online content.

You touched on it briefly (Fnarr ), but theres a website called greatwallofvagina (top punning ) with plaster casts of lots of lady gardens- the idea being to demonstrate that they come on all sorts of shapes so theres no need to be embarrassed if yours isn't the perfect neat and symmetrical vag you wish you'd been able to order from the catalogue (and on the whole, those of us who enjoy getting up close and personal with said anatomy only care that its clean and fresh ).

In a non sexual context, its actually quite a fascinating thing to look at and be able to 'compare' lots of foofage besides each other in isolation, as it were- as you're not distracted by how attractive you do or don't find the owner

There's definitely not enough educational material out there (for the guys to read/watch too!)

Occasionally hear of grown women who for whatever reason haven't learned about themselves (and guys who think women pee out their bum).

There was a site called "the-clitoris", it was full of all of the information you wanted, photos, names, descriptions, conditions, illnesses etc.

It had the right balance of medical, sexual, sensual, maintenance and pornographic. It had good links too!

One reproductive organ-so many views: above all educational.

Does anybody else remember it?

Sadly, it's not around any more but "Vulva care" on "wordpress" is the only clue to the formers sites existance.

"Gynodiversity" is both a website and a coffee table book.

"Volume One - Second Edition"

Not cheap, but very detailed. You can see hundreds of standing/recumbent/age specific/ethinic specific picture. They are so varied that it should be an education.

Religion is the biggest barrier to sexual awakening, education and healthy approach to it.

So until the likes of sin, circumcision male and female are outlawed the stigma will always cloud the subject in ignorance and fear.
