They'd surely know themselves wouldn't they? |

"What would you say, you want the money for them?"
I'd explain my shoes are not cheap and would like to know if the dog was known for destroying shoes.
If so why wasn't I warned I'd of kept them on.
Hopefully this would give them the idea to offer compensation. |

Didn’t they see you out then, as surely they have noticed?!
I would probably say something, but not in an angry way. It is annoying though, as they must know that the dog has past form for chewing, and should have warned you! |

Any responsible pet owner would either know so mitigate the issue by seperating shoes from dog or if it was a first time thing, apologise and offer to pay for any damage.
It's the same as if your kids decided to use your guests car as a chalkboard with keys ![](/icons/s/eek.gif) |

Not necessarily because having a dog who has chewed stuff in the past I know how picklesome pets can be. I might be annoyed but it wouldn't be a big deal. I tell people to put stuff up out of my dogs reach and if I visit a house with a pet I ask if they are likely to chew

I would mention it, but I would make light of the situation firstly to gauge the person's reaction. If they are embarassed and say they will reimburse you, you'd tell it's a genuine accident and they're good people, and I would brush it off. However if they joked about it too, kinda says alot about them and I'd never meet them again.
Either way I'd never get reimbursed for them. |

Omg if I went to someone’s house and was wearing my Louis Vuitton Run Away, 630 quids worth of trainers and some mutt chewed them up I’d be scanning the place for something the same in value and taking it. |

Anything left where the dog can access it is a legal chew toy. Yes the dog shouldn’t have chewed them but you should also have considered where you left them |

They way we think of it :-
Dog people tend to be friendly and caring as they spend a lot of time and love on their 'pets' / family, care and put a lot of effort in to maintaining a loving relationship, walking, feeding, cuddling, training, cleaning up after, etc.
Cat people are like Dog people but a lot lazier
People without pets like the illusion of order and perfection but are often cold at heart.
These are just generalisations of course ![](/icons/s/2/halo.gif) |

I would say something but it would be along the lines of "Hey. What happened to my shoes?".
If the dog is known to do this I'd hope they'd tell me not to leave my shoes there although I'd probably ask if where I left them was ok. |

Yes but it wouldn't occur to me to automatically think to put my shoes out of the way. I'm used to taking my shoes off in the hallway/ porch and leaving them.. not putting them up on a shelf or hiding them away. That isn't natural if you aren't used to being around dogs. |

I’d definitely bring it up straight away.
I have dogs and have never had a pair of shoes chewed. Not even in puppyhood. It wouldn’t occur to me to not leave my shoes on the floor.
I’d not demand the money back but I would express my displeasure as I would be without shoes for the return journey. |

I dunno, I doubt I'd be wearing particularly fancy shoes and could probably pick up another pair exactly the same for under 50 quid so probably not a massive problem. I'd assume a responsible dog owner would be OK for paying for any damages caused by their 'fur baby' (ugh).
I do quite like dogs but I prefer them to be well-behaved if not trained. I used to go out with a girl who used to foster rescue dogs, some of which had some pretty odd behavioral traits including extreme separation anxiety. She would let them up on the bed when we were having sex and be like "just ignore the dog" - all well and good but it's a half a tonne of staffy/rottweiler cross that seems to be getting a little too turned on by what is happening nearby and then wants to start getting involved in the 'games'... :o
Erm, nope. I cannot maintain an érection under these circumstances ![](/icons/s/confused.gif) |

How guilty does the dog look. If it has those big puppy dog eyes and a look of remorse I would probably laugh it off. If its one of those remoresless terrier types, I would keep an eye on my bare ankles and make a quick escape saying I will drop a bill by

You only have one persons side of the story though so have assumed the dog owner is at fault.
By the way, dog owners are liable for damage to another persons property in their home or a garden vehicle. Not on the owners property unless it can be proved that they were negligent. |

I would have said "Your dog has chewed my shoes to bits" then laughed.
I don't wear expensive shoes to meet anyone, so the cost would be minimal.
Next time I went I would take one of the shoes with me, and hide the ones I wear.
