My mother's maiden name is Old Norse, and that's been confirmed by Scandinavian people that I've met over the years, but how far back we have to go to determine when my ancestors were wearing hats with horns on them is anyone's guess.

Hi, I’ve never really looked at the ancestry DNA site as my birth certificate confirms I’m half viking as my mum is Norwegian. My jobs have always been as a fighter being ex military and then as a private military contractor. I love exploring new places especially for financial gains. No it’s because they found their language to be a babble. Both the Greeks and Romans thought outsiders barbarians. The Romans most hated enemies were the Carthaginians, Germanic tribes and the Persians.

As my Jamaican heritage wife likes to remind me, I’m descended from the barbarians (Norse Gaels). She like to think her race built the pyramids which many would say was correct.

I’d say dubious views of the past are across cultures and not specific to English speakers.

Yes, that's right – I've heard it said that the Greeks onomatopoeically represented the language of all non-Greek-speakers as "bar bar bar", hence "barbaros". Which has an interesting parallel in the old 'Allo 'Allo TV series, when the French-speaking characters are pretending to be able to speak English, by making a "Far far-far far far" noise. Hah.

I wonder how many other languages have such an in-built correlation between "foreign" and a pejorative?

Anyway, back on topic: I'm 6' 8", have long hair down to the bottom of my ribs (tied up on top of my head in my pictures), and since I haven't got around to shaving in a month, I currently have a bit of a beard too.

However, I also have dark hair and eyes, and I'm slim rather than muscular. Decided for yourself whether that's sufficiently "viking".

Scandinavian surnames (e.g. Flett, Scarth, Linklater, Heddle.

I hate to burst bubbles, but historically and factually, there is no such thing as "viking DNA" or "viking ancestry". Viking was just a name given much later in history to thieves and raiders comprised of a mixture of various nationalities from around Scandinavia, collectively known as the Norse people. Many of these people migrated to, occupied and settled in much of the north of England from the late 8th century which is why so many place names and family surnames in the north are of Scandinavian origin. The vast majority of "viking history" comes from trashy novels, popular in Victorian times. Harold, he of 1066 arrow-in-the-eye fame, was Harold Godwinson, his mother was Gytha Thorkelsdóttir, a Danish noblewoman.

There is only one piece of historical evidence to support northmen being tattoed - and that was from an arabic scholar (Ahmed Iban Fadlam) - and that related to northmen met in russia, so not necessarily the same as the seafaring Vikings.
