Friendly reminder ladies or those with a vagina/cervix to get your smear test. I’m just off for mine. 5 mins of discomfort vs potential cancer.
Don’t put them off. I did and needed treatment. Hoping this one is all clear.
Also for ladies of a certain age get those mammograms too!x |

"Fingers crossed for you x
My last smear I declared on Facebook I'd just been fingered by a lovely lady I clarified the scenario to raise awareness as you are now "
Hahahaha sounds like something I’d do! I just think that it’s so important. I put mine off and had to have treatment. Jade Goody died at my age! X |

"All up to date here, I hope your results come back all clear OP.
And even if you're not an old dear, you can still check your boobs for any changes/irregularities. " .
So true xx |

Got my neg letter yesterday. For someone who has had hundreds on internal exams and then eventually recoiled and refused anymore it took alot of guts to finally get mine done. I didn't feel a thing at all, not sure what I was worried about at all! |

That’s what I was like, I have trauma around examinations due to past experiences and stuff but I figured that it’s 5 mins and it could save my life so have to get it done. I wanted to be under GA for my treatment as I found the biopsies so traumatising but I was a big brave girl and got it done with just local. That was 3 years ago so this is my next routine smear, so I am hoping this one is ok. X |

What age ?
They are stopped when you reach a certain year.
Always seemed odd to me. At a time in life when your body starts to fail they stop the check ups. |

People need reminding. After the Covid year and more people have got out of the swing of things. |

It is weird. I just re checked and smears stop at 65 and boob screening at 71 but you can have a mammogram if you want one every three years but they wont be sending to remind you
AND .... and it's a big AND on the NHS website itself ......
If you are 71 or over you are more at risk of getting breast cancer than a younger woman. This is because the risk of getting breast cancer increases with age. About 1 in 3 of all breast cancers occur in women aged 71 or over.
Yet they don't call you for screening
Maybe the oldies are 'dispensable'. |

I looked into this as I had abnormal cells removed years ago when I was about 26. My daughter is 24. The nurse said the reason they wouldn’t do it under 25 is risk of miscarriage is higher apparently. |

I heard that it’s to do with the fact that younger woman’s cells are still changing and when you hit 25 they’ve matured so unlikely to give a false positive result. That was what they told me when I wanted one early anyway. Annoying because at 26 I needed treatment so if they’d done it sooner I might not have x |

Sorry to hear you both have problems with this procedure too. I’m similar… despite telling whichever nurse or doctor (male or female, neither listen) that it can’t be done in the surgery, they all seem to want to try to prove me wrong. After 3 or 4 different doctors or nurses have all had a (lengthy, painful and unsuccessful) pop at it, my GP has to refer me to my local hospital day surgery unit to have it done under sedation.
Every. Single. Time.
Why they can’t just write it up on my notes and save them wasting their (and their patients) time, I really don’t know. It’d also save me a heck of a lot of continued pain and stress |

"I wonder how much of an increase in treatment there will be as during covid they won’t routinely doing smears and I expect it’ll have had an impact. "
I had my smear in April 2020, smack bang in lockdown 1. They weren't stopped everywhere and they weren't supposed to stop either. This time, the nurse couldn't find my cervix
Last time, they put my knickers in the sink |

"Fingers crossed for your all clear.
I wish they did manograms at 40, would help a lot more people catch it earlier "
I agree, i've been to the breast clinic for lumps 3 times now, all turned out to be fine thankgod but then I walk out feeling like im a drain on the nhs.I wish we could just have regular screening, it would really put my mind at ease, I literally hate my boobs, i'm too scared to touch them incase O find something else now. |

It's because people over 71 probsbly won't die of the disease so technically you're over diagnosing and therefore potentially treating them with aggressive treatments unnecessarily. You can still request screening though |

I hope all goes well !
Remember ladies you can ask for a smaller speculum if you find it difficult too! Hands under the bottom can make it more comfortable …..
For those that really struggle you can also insert the speculum yourself !

I have a disability that means I can't push up with my leg to lift my bum off the bed and I have a prolapsed uterus. My last smear was 10mins of the nurse fishing around to find my cervix. Not pleasant. |

Did all of the above today. Minus the self insert, nurse said it really helps when a woman knows her body. I told her I’m tilted slightly and my cervix likes to hide. Saved her poking around. Was done in 5 mins and she had a trainee with her.
Now just waiting the results x

I have looked after ladies who have had what’s sounds like a similar disability- you can also use a wedge (some doctors surgeries have them ) to help tilt the pelvis back to make the cervix more reachable , or even ask if they have a pillow ?
They really should be more hot on ensuring it isn’t a distressing / faffing process for everyone but also ensuring that women with disabilities don’t feel put off attending due to reasons such as your own ! |

Same here but hard to explain but I could have put money on that I would have something not quite right with the results |

Up to date with smear due next year.
Even with the checks and all clears it is important you know your body, do regular checks and spot any differences. 6 weeks after an all clear mammogram I discovered a 3cm lump, things can develop very quickly. |

I'm up to date and let my social media posses know I've had it in the hope that all the ladies have theirs.
They found something not quite right last time. With that and abnormal bleeding, I've had biopsies and an MRI and I'm seeing a consultant next week about treatment for a pre-cancerous condition. This would never have been detected had I not gone to see the nurse in the first place. |

Great reminder.
After having CIN3 cells removed a couple of years ago I never miss another smear test.
Believe me, those treatments are not nice. Smear each and every time |

Yes I had CIN3 also. Had the loop excision. Not fun. Definitely take a smear test over that any day. Xx |
