So recently ive bought a Road bike and go out on it lots. also been watching a lot more road races on the TV too.
anyone else into road cycling and maybe races or cycling clubs?
would love to actually find someone to talk about it with |

Yep got a bike myself a hybrid 1,so use roads+trails,although having difficulties with it again despite it being only 6months old,but cycling is a brilliant way to keep fit i think,good for clearing the head too |

YEah I have a road bike try and do at least 20 miles a day, just about to buy a turbo trainer so don't have to go out in the rain lol, if you go on British cycling website it will give you the names of clubs near you, also if you Google sky rides they will have a list of rides in your area where you can just turn up and cycle with a group, |

I've been thinking about getting a road bike myself. I already have a tasty collection of carbon fibre mountain bikes of the trail and downhill variety, but just for the fitness aspect alone, a road bike would make sense.
There are a few local road cycling clubs near me, but I just don't know if I could handle the lycra! |

LOl I know what you mean I'm not one for being seen in public in lycra, So what I do is put some baggy shorts over the top, I have a mountain bike too but just couldn't get into it, I use an app called strava for my rides its brilliant if your competitive like me it shows everyone's times so you know what to chase |

I have both a mtb and a road.. I like both as each one is a different type of riding and needs a different skill set and disciplines.
plus Its a great form of exercise being social and meeting some great people to learn from who are normally willing to pass on their experience.. and the lycra is a must!! which you will find out the first time its mega hot or you get drenched , and NO i am not being rude!!  |

Strava is good but endomondo is one of the best apps around, and free tracking and graphs on the website only etc only 2.99 for the app. There was a thing in the news i think about injured seriously using an app of some description trying to beat someone's time down hill!!

Have a road bike for the 10 mile daily commute (with occasional long detours) and my mtb for thrashing round the plentiful mountains. As you say, both require a different skillset but I much prefer mountain biking. Love hurtling down a hill knowing one slip could be nasty! |

Have a road bike for the 10 mile daily commute (with occasional long detours) and my mtb for thrashing round the plentiful mountains. As you say, both require a different skillset but I much prefer mountain biking. Love hurtling down a hill knowing one slip could be nasty! "
admit I dot really hurtle!! each has its own unique fun.. 45mph down hill on a roadie is a thrill and a half!!  |

Well, I'm more into off-road cycling myself - I get no pleasure from cycling on the traffic-congested roads where I live - but I refuse to be a 'mamil' thanks.
I don't just think it looks awful, I had some lycra-based insulating underclothing for motorcycling and I hate the feel of the stuff too, suffocating.
But don't knock t 'til you've tried it! One may sweat but at least one shall look like a gentleman! Albeit a sweaty one...

check out british cycling home page for clubs near you,if you are on stourbride side of dudley i would check out stourbride c.c. who do all different rides for beginners and off road and canalside rides too!.
i started riding as 11 year old going on sunday rides over to clent from bham,then went further afield,have
raced on the road track,cyclo-cross,mountain bikes,even raced on the continent too!.
have not raced for 6-7 years but did race in veterans timetrials,road races,even our friday night track league at halesowen too!,was out for rides this weekend doing saturday & sunday rides of 2&1/2 in the sunshine and i did wear lycra a crash hat!. |

I worked for Saxo Bank last year, and met that short bloke, Alberto Contador or whatever he is called. Everyone over there were dead keen on road cycling, and there was an annual trip to the TdF, along with training with the pro's after work during the week. Personally I never took part in any of that - my bike got nicked four days after I'd bought it and couldn't be arsed to get a replacement. They did arrange for a virtual race in the HQ where we got onto bikes hooked up to the live TdF to try and keep up with them. Great fun, but perhaps having free drinks made it less serious than it should have been |

I read that and do wonder if our wheels have crossed...
I do a fair bit, my commute is a 30 mile roundtrip. Consider myself an ex racing cyclist who has the occasional relapse.
And I have the confidence to not worry about what i look like in lycra, though working in an office full of women I do have a thick skin! And lycra never lies so it most definitely keeps me focused in keeping the pounds off! |

Get off the roads, you do not have any form of insurance, take up to much room and do not pay to use the road.
Militant cyclists who think the internal combustion engine is the work of the devil need to think how thier cycle was delivered to the shop.
Maybe if you behaved properly on the roads obeying the rules of the highway you would be treated fairly.

Many cyclists do have insurance.
We take up far less room than a car, so if we swap our bikes for cars congestion would increase significantly. Is that what you want?
You paragraph about militant cyclists is so illogiocal and lacking in substance it is not even worth countering.
Cyclists aren't perfect. Nor are motorists. Which group causes the most fatalities?

No ones perfect on the roads. We all have our own bad habits on whatever type of transportation.
I love cycling. Was lucky to have a big chunk of time out from work during this years TDF so really got into it then. Did used to go and watch the Tour of Britainwhen it came to our area but it completely missed Leicester this year. I do own a road bike, not a full racing one (on the wishlist) and have the Sky jerseys aswell. Im reluctant to using thr car on the weekend so often do a fair whack of miles on the bike on the weekend. Good way to stay in shape and feel fresh i reckon! |

Road fund licence does not fund the roads, it is just a tax on owning a car.
You have been to cycling clubs and never met ANYONE with insurance? Odd because it is part of the racing licence? So all these cycling clubs had no racing cyclists? Odd oh hang on maybe the were touring clubbs, meaning their memembers are probably in the CTC and oh that means they have insurance... Of course there is no legal requirement for a cyclist to have insurance. Unlike motorists, a significant number of whom don't.
I'll leave it there. Your initial post smacked of unimaginative trolling and this reply makes it quite obvious you aren't exactly talking form a position of knowledge  |

Im a roady, moved over from mountainbikes a few years ago, getting to many injuries, love hitting big hills and giving the lungs a good stretch, it great for fitness and stamina, the down side is if you get hooked you can spend a fortune. ) |

I honestly don't know. Sagan is saying that he hasn't great form but he would say that. Gilbert needs something to salvage his season and the Vuelta suggests that he is getting some form at last. I'm confused by the Brits, a very strong squad for a team allegedly with no plan or leader. I suspect they have learnt from the Olympics and shouting off your game plan is not a genius idea. I like the worlds as it is generally so unpredictable and haven't really got a clue. Freire possibly? Phinney? I'm sure Voeckler has talked about targetting it and it would be ace to see him do it. |

anyone near dudley or in westmidlands do it? and its such a good fitness thing i was dying when i first started but now i can go for ages and up savage hills and im find. the MAPMYRIDE app for iphone is class for monitoring it and giving you great stats.
i do try mountain by stuff too. got a boardman and i love it x |

Oh dear.. "Road tax" as you put it is an environmental tax based on how polluting your form of transport is!!so cycles zero pollution=zero tax!and my small diesel =low tax but believe me very little of your disc in the corner goes to the roads anyhow !I both drive ride.I am Insured through British cycling and also have private insurance for my car and bike.
As to treated being treated Fairly??? that is the kind of thinking that usually injures or KILLs people because someone believes that they have more of a right to the road than other legal road users !
I will concede the point that there are awful cyclists and motorists that flaunt the rules of the road endangering themselves and other innocents!but due to human nature and mindset there always will be!!
And the argument will always rage!!  |

its amazing how many think that road fund tax/licence helps to build our roads!,our roads are built & maintained through taxes from us ALL!.
am a car driver as are vast majority of cyclists over 21 years of age,though not racing anymore i still get out cycling at weekends & keep up membership of british cycling for protection & insurance.
when out as a cyclist on the road i observe many motorists are in that much of a rush they do not care about laws of the road at all,witness how many are chatting on mobile phones as they negotiate traffic islands etc,and how many observe the 'give way to the traffic from te right' at islands and just blindly travel onwards without thought of other drivers never mind cyclists!.
i am aware that there are some cyclists who let our side down by jumping redlights and ignore stop signs just as some car drivers do also. |

i can see voeckler instigating a few breaks and stiring things up but thing he will show too much too soon to be medal winner!,can see a 12 man break possibly getting away as it strings out over top of cauberg maybe whittled down to 6 men at finish.
boonen & gilbert both toughies could be there in final selection,sagan gets over climbs too!,the spaniards have contador,friere & sanchez,who is there for dutch & italians?.
some years ago in late 60s an older clubmate of mine won gold in amateur race for gb in this region but this year our gb hopes are resting on the ladies,with lizzie armitstead & emma pooley,whilst our junior girls are defending lucy garners title. |

Blimey, at this rate we'll be able to start a swinging cyclists club!
We're both keen club riders and do the odd TT and we also do fair bit of touring(did Santander to Caen in August). Planning on doing a round the world trip once we get rid of the last of those pesky kids!

Ride everywhere as i don't own a car.
Have a Boardman flat-barred* road bike for road duties, not racing but good days out in the saddle doing a century around the Lancs/Yorks Dales will really give you a work out!
Two mountain bikes and i'm taking the big one to the Spanish Sierra Nevadas next week for a week playing silly sods on some of the most bonkers trails i've ever ridden
*Must admit, i'm feeling the urge to splash the cash on a proper carbon road bike as my old commuter bike is on it's last wheels now and i could use the Boardman as my commuter and treat myself to a new roadie bike.....

stopped off at our local clent hills for a walk on my way home this evening, just before dusk as i finished my walk and got back to my car there were about 5 mountain bikers getting bikes ready to go for a ride complete with lamps on helmets,i think i might try this one night myself!,no walkers,dog walkers to worry about hitting,could be a fun ride!. |

Night riding is great fun, especially at this time of year as you start in the light and watch the sky darken as you are riding - plus it's not too cold!
I have a big HID lamp that pretty much lights up everything but you still need your wits about you when the going gets technical. A great way of turning a fairly ordinary trail into a tech-fest when it's pitch black and you can't see what's coming up. |

TAlk about bad luck I've had my new road bike 4 month, in that time I've had 6 punctures snapped 2 sets of pedals 2 falls and one big crash lol, told the wife its the bike and I need a new one lol |

RIbble bikes are also reasonable price and good spec too, I've fallen in love with a blue and white casati with Athena group set and mavic carbon wheels it looks the bollocks |

Im off to Cornwall on Saturday and im taking both my bikes including a single speed mountain bike !!....

Advice please.
I ride a hybrid bike, typically 50 miles per week - a mixture of occasional commuting and a leisure ride on a Sunday (ie regular but lightweight cyclist)
Is it worth getting a proper set of shoes / pedals? What advantage will they bring? And what about those shoes with clips which can still be walked in?

Proper pedals and shoes are great , mtb shoes are easy to walk in, id recommend shimano m520 spd pedals , cheap and brilliant for the money ... road pedals are very different .... and as the cleats on the bottom of the shoes are a lot bigger , its a lot harder to walk in them !! .... to start id go for MTB pedals and shoes ...
out of all the upgrades ive ever put on any of my bikes in the last 20 yrs , clipless pedals have been the best upgrade |

I raced road, track & triathlon back in the day. Fell away from it for a while, to discover the joys of motorcycling but have come back to cycling with renewed passion & am looking forward to riding a fair few sportives next year. Etape Caledonia anyone??

i use the shimano m324 pedals, they're a good pedal to start with. You can also wear shoes that enable you to walk normally.
Once you get used to the pedals you'll never go back to clipless again.
We do like to get out on our road bikes weather permitting although we've just stocked up winter gear to get out rain, hail or shine. Use the map my ride app, still second place on a rather tasty climb but working on it |

YEah a few of my friends have it on there garmin, I don't think It's so much the info it gives with your ride for me its about being able to see other peoples times and gives you something to aim for, basically your gps gives you your full ride where as strava has segments, its hard to explain in text form lol |

I use sports tracker on mine. Gives you all kinds if info and also a breakdown of info along your route you took. Also U can then.login to there site and look at your info in a more detailed way. I'm new to cycling and got one if them hybrid bikes. Got a nice 24 speed Raleigh urban 2. |

All I can say is use it once and if your a competitive person you'll be hooked trying to get king of the mountains on hills around your area, I find myself planning my ride to attack certain hills and chase times |

Went to the Sierra Nevadas/Alpujarras last year and one bloke turned up with a singlespeed hardtail - guy running the holiday said no-one had ever turned up with a singlespeed in 23yrs of business! He was a bloody good rider as well.

in holland it used to be the norm for the roadmen to ride a single freewheel during the 'off season',used to keep the pedalling style more supple they reckoned.
in 60's-70's it used to be the normal thing to ride a single fixed wheel in winter time,was reckoned to make you work harder in following the full pedal stroke and gave you a better pedalling style!,even early season training rides done on the 69-73 fixed gear till mid feb when gears where then used.

On behalf of cyclist everywhere, we do apologise unreservedly for whizzing by you and getting to work in half the time while you sit in your strangled traffic queues. With our cholesterol free circulatory systems, clear lungs, absecence of body fat and freedom from the risks of heart disease, MI, stroke and the onset of Diabetes type 2.
You obviously have the more stressful lifstyle so we as the cycling section of society feel that you have the right to bitch and moan to your diseased hearts' content.

things are looking really good for our young GB cyclists at the world championships in holland this week!,earlier in the week elinor barker won the gold medal & champions rainbow jersey in the womens junior time trial
and in the junior womens road race this afternoon lucy garner won in a bunch sprint to retain the title she won last year!,lucy does look rather cute in the rainbow jersey and must have decided she wants another year wearing it,she is also the european junior ladies champion too!.

I was riding fixed in the winter when I raced in the 80's and 90's. Still love riding it now, love the simplicity and the few tt's I did last year were on my track bike. |

i used to do friday nights @ halesowen but not competed there in 10 years now!,although i still used to pop in to watch the racing,used to be loads of freewheelers riding and i got my nephew interested in under 9s events and used to really enjoy the racing(particulary when bryan smart used to let them follow the derny on sunday mornings)we used to get riders from far afield riding who were at one of our local universities were you at one?. |

be mainly flat stuff on a cycle path, just to keep up the mileage in winter. like to keep to the legs moving fairly quick to get a bit of a sweat going but not wanting to be spinning like a madman |

ive got a top descent and a very big number 2 descent.topped out over 60 some of the times for climbs are twice as quick as mine |

cycling is getting popular now. if your going to take it up make sure you review bikes and brands. You need to spend about 500-1000 for a good bike.
and based on the weather atm some waterproofs would be good lol |

...And you can spend a huge amount more! But TBH unless you are serious about competing then you don't really need to go to the £2K+ mark. The only person you will be competing awith is yourself so find a bike shop you can trust, and get fitted properly. Fit on a road bike is pretty essential if you're spending a long time in the saddle. Don't forget to budget for some decent padded shorts as well - your bits will thank you for it!

You would struggle to get a decent roadbike for £500 unless you buy secondhand. But at the £1k mark shop around and there are some amazing bikes out there. The difference between a 500 and 1000 bike is huge, far more than betweem a 1000 and 2000 bike. |

I'd echo that, but they are quite expensive to join and their focus tends to be towards the track and also youth riders. If you aren;t interested in the track it possibly isn't the best club for you. |
